After a decade devoted to djing, in 2009 Stojche shifted to producing and has since released records on labels like A.r.t.less, DMK, Conform, Subwax and Argumento Music, which he has co-founded. In 2011 he launched his solo imprint “Tangible Assets”. An outlet that has given him the freedom to explore and refine his trademark Detroit-influenced dubbed out productions. Enjoy!

The gents toilets at the Railway Hotel in Southend is not somewhere usually described as inspirational. For several months the hand drier was broken and made a very loud screeching noise as it spread germs around. Daryl Easley, a fellow DJ on Ship Full Of Bombs internet radio station, sent me an unsolicited recording of it made on his mobile phone, which I then fixed using a Teenage Engineering OP-1 and the Samplr iPad app.

Working from the 1950s onwards and best known as the creator of Deep Listening, Oliveros primarily utilised electronic, vocal and improvisational media. A composer and musical theorist of considerable scope, intelligence and sensitivity, her life-long aim was to develop new and more profound ways of hearing music. 

This project was inspired by Phelan and Cherer’s attendance at one of Pauline’s last public appearances, at St. John Smiths Square in summer 2016, during which she led the audience in a performance of her composition ‘Tuning Meditation’, both feeling it to be a singularly memorable and moving experience. 

By drawing upon Oliveros’ principles the thirteen musicians featured on this compilation have fashioned dedicated pieces, using a variety of musical palettes and compositional styles, to reflect both Oliveros’ own wide ranging talent and the influence that her work has had upon their own practice.

With Alison Cotton, Brona McVittie, Oliver Cherer and Keiron Phelan, David Colohan, Isnaj Dui, Thollem Electric, The New Honey Shade, James Stringer, Neotropic, Anne Garner, The Hardy Tree and Michael Tanner.

The Last Sense To Leave Us, A Tribute To Pauline Oliveros (Snippets)

It's impossible to talk about the sound of DjRUM without using the word cinematic. Whatever he does, it has a feeling of grand importance, widescreen elegance and moving emotion that elevates it way above a dance floor soundtrack. Throughout the course of his career, the UK artist has drawn on downtempo, blurred the lines between drum & bass and dubstep and always imbued his music with spoken words snippets, piano and chamber instruments. His Portrait With Firewood album was a real high-water mark in 2018, and last year his latest outing on R&S once again managed to draw on every aspect of electronic music and come up with something all his own. 

His mix for us this week is a perfect ethereal rave that finds plenty of beauty in the sparse rhythms he draws on from the worlds of garage, techno and drum & bass. There is a delicacy and elegance throughout, even when the beats hit hard and fast as they do at the overdriven and manic mid point. The amen breaks come thick and fast after that, but eventually melt away to propulsive ambient soundscapes that suspend you in time and space. Blissful.

BIO:
Since 2005, Isnaj Dui (Katie English) has stood awkwardly between neo-impressionism and electronica, conveying a minimal yet capturing sound using the pure tones of concert and bass flutes alongside home-made dulcimers and electronics.   Having done her grades on flute and cello, English has also studied electroacoustic music, alternative tunings and Balinese gamelan.  She has graced labels such as Home Normal, Rural Colours, Smallfish, Front & Follow and her own FBox imprint. 

Having gained critical acclaim for releases such as 2007’s Amacrine (Smallfish) and 2014’s Dead Albatross Prize nominated Euplexia (Rural Colours), English has been cited as a distinct voice, taking the flute away from its pastoral image whilst maintaining its unique mellow sound.  She has also composed several site-specific sound installations including UNThread as part of a series throughout unconventional spaces around Essex, and After the Flood as part of Hebden Bridge Arts Festival 2013.  A prolific live performer, English has performed in numerous high profile venues and has received extensive attention in Wire Magazine and air play on Radio 3's Late Junction and BBC 6 Music.

As well as her solo work, Katie plays in littlebow, The Doomed Bird of Providence, The Sly & Unseen and has collaborated live and on record with numerous bands including Piano Magic, Memory Drawings and Hybernation.

Stuart’s work is inspired by location and the people, experiences and objects he encounters there. 

He is particularly interested in sounds that are associated with place, overlooked and overheard noises of the everyday and highlighting the auditory as a defining factor in how we experience a particular environment.

His recordings of people, their activities, experiences and environs have contributed to art installations, phone apps, archival records, dance performances, public consultation events, musical compositions, a computer game, a eulogy and sound tracks to short films.
