As part of the European Commission's Affordable Energy Action Plan, Europe's electricity grids need to become more interconnected. But how? What concrete measures is the Commission proposing? And how much will they reduce overall energy costs?

In deze aflevering… Vorige week was de CERAWeek, in Houston, de hoogmis van de internationale energiewereld. Iedereen die er een beetje toe doet, was er. Zoals Fatih Birol, Executive Director van het IEA, die al op de eerste dag een opvallende draai maakte: de wereld moet weer meer in olie en gas gaan investeren. 
De internationale gas-industrie is bezorgd over de mogelijke terugkeer van Russisch gas op de wereldmarkt. Waarom, en is die angst terecht? Donald Trump ziet ondertussen graag dat de olieprijs flink daalt, maar wil tegelijk dat bedrijven ook méér olie en gas gaan produceren. Kan dat samengaan, en zo ja: hoe? En we hebben het over Brussel, waar alles rozengeur en maneschijn lijkt, als je de Europese Commissie mag geloven.

‘The Troubled Energy Transition’ is the title of a recent essay in Foreign Affairs, the influential foreign-policy magazine. Although some important progress is being made in the transition to renewables, fossil fuels are still dominating the energy system.

Rather than replacing conventional energy sources, the growth of renewables is coming on top of that of the conventional ones. What has been unfolding is not so much an ‘energy transition’ as an ‘energy addition’, the authors write.

So how can the world move forward? How should we move forward? And what about Europe? To answer these questions, I'm joined by someone the New York Times calls 'America's most influential energy expert'.

He is a leading authority on energy, geopolitics and the global economy, a best-selling author, Pulitzer Prize-winner for his book The Prize: The Epic Quest For Oil, Money & Power. His latest book is called The New Map: Energy, Climate and the Clash of Nations.

Call it the holy grail: producing steel without emitting greenhouse gases. In Sweden, three companies – SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall – have been working on it for years under the name HYBRITE. With a pilot plant in operation, the proof of concept has been delivered. Is the production of so-called ‘green steel’ ready for scale-up? And if not, what challenges remain?
