Joseph S Joyce has been active in the electronic music scene for a number of years, releasing on various underground labels, under different guises. His early career centered around London’s pirate radio scene, emanating in a string of club appearances at classic UK venues like Ministry of Sound, Scala, Bagley’s and Labyrinth.

In 2013 he founded the British record label Default Position, which has since gained a reputation for promoting emotive forms of electronic music while fostering emerging talent.

Joyce's music has appeared on labels such as Cocoon, fabric, Wiggle and Underbelly. His work has been remixed by the likes of Maya Jane Coles, Terry Francis, Sebastian Mullaert and many more.

By day, Joyce works for the music software company Ableton.

Default Position is a London/Berlin-based record label founded by Joseph S Joyce which specialises in emotive forms of electronic music. The label gets its name from a term that is widely used in psychology, referring to a person's natural tendency or reaction to something or someone. A person's default position is often based on deeply embedded core beliefs about themselves or the world around them, often originating from childhood. Many of us will have to challenge our default positions in life, especially if we've developed negative ones. In terms of creativity, however, we believe that the default position serves something of great value. We believe it represents an artist's fundamental frequency, a place of creative authenticity, devoid of external influences or material motive. When an artist's output comes from their default position they express their truth. Our aim is to help them deliver their message.

I've been DJ-Ing since about 1993 and was influenced by listening to the pirate radio stations of the time Kool F.m,Pulse F.m,Don F.m to mention a few. Me and my friends started to do mix sessions to hone our skills. From there we started to DJ on pirate stations in London, Flare F.M,Flex F.M and also started to play at club nights and university student parties all over the country. We have also been fortunate to meet and work with other prominent DJ's and have produced a tune with DJ TEE-BONE on his RIDDIM TRACK label (RIDT 14),me and my friends DJ STYLEE, MC ICEN and me myself DJ BLISS (Real Dimension) produced tracks called HIGHLIFE and THUNDERFOOT and was released back in 1998. We also got to meet and work with Bizzy B from the Joker record label. Since then we all carried on with working on radio stations and then later on working on internet radio.  I always have a passion to promote the music and bring it to the masses, that is partially why i joined Soundcloud to do mix sessions to upload on here so everyone can hear what the music is about. Drum and Bass is a part of me and always will be.

Icen has been mcing since the early days listening to Top buzz and the likes of Rat pack on cassette tape which friends borrowed  of older brothers.soon after was jumping on the mic around his pals bedroom.It all started about ten years agostarted to play at club nights and university student parties all over the country. Whoever said ‘it’s grim up north’ has yet to tune their ears to audio delights from production and DJ outfit Northern Lights. Comprising of Zak Burton & Gareth Kitcher aka Steppa and Kitcha, the duo who have been collaborating since 2009, have created nothing short of a hearty back-catalogue of releases under their Northern Lights alias; including chart-topping bangers championed by the likes of Congo Natty and Shogun Audio.

With deep rooted established careers in the world of drum and bass, the tail end of 2012 marked the beginning of a new musical venture for Northern Lights; exploring slower tempos, notably Dubstep.  Yet continuing to remain ever faithful to their signature upfront dancefloor sound, tracks such as ‘Loonology’ and ‘Sentiments’ hurtled them to the attention of bass-heavy tastemakers including True Tiger who quickly snapped up a batch to be released on their own imprint Stripes.

And there’s a lot more from where that came from!  Further testament to the musical goodness currently bubbling from Northern Lights’ HQ is the support from Dubstep dons Skream and Benga, who kicked off their first Radio 1 show of the year, personally selecting them as Future Stars of 2013! 

Already booked to play key bass music and fans’ favourite festivals across the globe this Summer including a much welcomed return to Hideout and Outlook, the future for Yorkshire’s finest export, Northern Lights, looks very, very bright indeed!
