SUBATOMIC SOUND is back with a ground shaking, political scorcher from Jamaica's massive dancehall reggae star Anthony B on Subatomic Sound System & Nomadic Wax' re-upped "NYC-2-Africa" riddim, recorded in Africa, NYC, and Jamaica. In response to the universal anti-corruption message, it was remixed by producers from around the globe, essentially musically translating into the dialect of what's happening on their streets, resulting in twelve amazing versions we couldn’t have imagined, from cumbia to tropical to all sorts of dubstep twist ups as well as vintage rude boy roots, hip hop, and dancehall reggae!

Anthony B’s politically charged anthem is particularly riveting because it called out JA’s Prime Minister Bruce Golding at the time he was struggling with civil war surrounding the United States-requested extradition of “Dudus,” a don from the Tivoli Gardens garrison district of Kingston and a leader of the Prime Ministers main constituency—an obvious point of hypocrisy.

Anthony B recorded his vocals in Kingston in April 2010, as the the city broke out in riots capped off by the Tivoli Gardens military extradition raid. Tensions were further heightened by a drought that led to water supplies to many of Kingston’s residents being cut off for days at a time.

When Anthony first heard the African drums, his eyes lit up and he and his crew began a classic African call and response chant to the beat. After listening to the riddim over and over on repeat, he demanded to go straight into the studio and, without a word written, delivered a blistering performance, waiving his lighter and literally jumping off the walls of the vocal booth while singing like a man on fire.

Reggae’s classic ganja tune & incendiary protest song re-licked for 2021 with two of the Jamaican “reggae revival“ 
movement’s stars, Yaadcore & Jah9, updating the vibes on the mic alongside Lee “Scratch” Perry’s NYC band 
Subatomic Sound System producing the heavyweight riddim in the future dubwise style of their acclaimed “Super 
Ape Returns to Conquer” album. Originally recorded in 1982 by John Holt & The Roots Radics at Channel One 
Studio, this song captured the hearts of a generation opposed to the CIA-funded, $9 million campaign by Jamaican 
police to eradicate marijuana from the island. With the goal of bringing this musical history to a new generation, 
Yard Birdz Records approached Emch of Subatomic Sound System to recreate the riddim with 21st century sub bass 
and drums, helicopters swirling overhead, and plenty of dubwise smoke & fire. Jah9 brings new vibes to John Holt’s
original lyrics with her signature vocal style that evokes the deep, powerful tone of US jazz giant Nina Simone or 
Lauryn Hill. Known for her own poetic protest music as well as recent boomshot collaborations with Chronixx, Jah9’s 
performance demonstrates why her unique sound has paved the way for a new generation of women in reggae. 
Meanwhile, Yaadcore turns up the heat with all new verses addressing today’s cannabis industry ina style that
connects the roots of classic DJs like Yellowman & U-Roy to the dancehall era of Vybz Kartel. Yaadcore surprised the 
world in 2020, reintroducing himself as a vocalist after being the longtime DJ for Protoje. Yaadcore is credited with 
launching the mixtape series that introduced Chronixx & Protoje to the world. Subatomic percussionist and 
Jamaican legend Larry McDonald, 84 years young, is on the congas, nyabinghi drums, & percussion, adding new 
African rhythms absent from the original tune. Larry brings a lifetime of heritage as a reggae originator having 
worked with everyone from Count Ossie, The Skatalites, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, & Lee Perry in Jamaica to Gil Scot 
Heron, Taj Mahal, and even Bad Brains in the USA. Subatomic’s Troy Shaka Simms adds saxophone lines that take
it back to Africa with melodies inspired by the timeless Ethiopian jazz of Mulatu Astatke. The guitar lines on the 
original tune are redone with heavily effected horns reminiscent of Lee Perry’s Black Ark recordings. On the 
dubstrumental mix, Emch plays and dubs the melodica in the fragmented style of Augustus Pablo’s “King Tubby
Meets Rockers Uptown”.

Striking right to the core of our very existence: Survival, corrupt politics, preserving authentic culture, and the destruction of our environment are the topics of the three heart wrenching vocals delivered straight from the souls of Anthony B, Jahdan, &amp; Bajah on this crucial release.

Do you know about the new subway line connecting NYC, Jamaica, and Africa? No? It may not exist yet, but thanks to producers Emch (Subatomic Sound System) &amp; Benny Beats (Nomadic Wax), this vision already has a soundtrack: The NYC-2-Africa EP was recorded in New York City; Kingston, Jamaica; and Dakar, Senegal, using a single original riddim to trace the diaspora back through history from hip hop’s inception on NYC’s gritty streets to its Jamaican dancehall reggae roots, and from the Jamaican dancehall to its foundation in African rhythms—represented here by a battery of Senegalese sabar drums. 

The politics, culture, and environmental awareness fundamental to this musical history are represented vocally by three artists crucial to the diaspora, each delivering what people are calling some of their all time best performances: Jamaican culture dancehall superstar Anthony B; NYC’s reggae/electronic/hip hop firebrand Jahdan Blakkamoore, of Smif ‘n Wesson “Soundbwoy Burial” fame &amp; winner of iTunes 2009 reggae album of the year; and Sierra Leone, Africa’s #1 rapper and bonafide musical hero, Bajah of the Dry Eye Crew.  The combination of this music and history is explosive.

Anthony B's politically charged anthem is particularly riveting because it called out JA's Prime Minister Bruce Golding at the time he was struggling with civil war surrounding the United States-requested extradition of "Dudus," a don from the Tivoli Gardens garrison district of Kingston and a leader of the Prime Ministers main constituency—an obvious point of hypocrisy.  Anthony B recorded his vocals in Kingston in April 2010, as the the city broke out in riots capped off by the Tivoli Gardens extradition raid.  Tensions were further heightened by a drought that led to water supplies to many of Kingston’s residents being cut off for days at a time.  When Anthony first heard the African drums, his eyes lit up and he and his crew began a classic African call and response chant to the beat. After listening to the riddim over and over on repeat, he demanded to go straight into the studio and, without a word written, delivered a blistering performance, waiving his lighter and literally jumping off the walls of the vocal booth while singing like a man possessed by inspiration.

To make this dream a reality required a truly international collaboration, spearheaded by NYC label Subatomic Sound, a cornerstone of current dub and bass culture, in conjunction with African hip hop label and documentary film makers Nomadic Wax out of Brooklyn (producers of the controversial film “Democracy in Dakar”) and also longtime roots and dancehall foundation label, Peoples Records from Kingston, JA.

This digital release features political, cultural and environmentally charged vocal versions by Anthony B (Jamaica), Jahdan Blakkamoore (NYC/Guyana), Bajah (Sierra Leone), plus the dubbed up instrumental, and a combination medley of the versions (for DJs).


Anthony's track is slated for  7" release by People's Records in JA with worldwide distro followed by a 12" on Subatomic Sound focused on Anthony B's tune which will include this riddim, a harder beat called "Urban Warfare" (that Paul Zasky and Emch produced) and mixes by several other of our favorite producers.
