In the UK Midlands of late 1988, shortly after the second Summer of Love, a 15 year old schoolboy, already immersed in Acid House and Detroit Techno, reads in one of the pretentious London-centric mags he devours each month about a new sound which could be the next big genre.  It's called New Beat, and it comes, of all places, from Belgium. This makes him pay attention -  he spent every summer holiday of his youth in one of the country's resorts, and had vague memories of stark, pounding electronic music emanating from club doorways late at night.

He makes a trip from his suburban home into the city centre determined to find some examples of this new music. After a lot of searching he comes up trumps: a compilation album called 'New Beat - Take 1'. He buys it on the spot and takes it home to listen to. As with most albums he's ever bought, he feels slightly cheated, after a couple of good tracks there's a fair bit of filler, and certainly no overriding 'sound' other than a somewhat slow and Euro Pop centric approach to House. Nothing like the aural fingerprint of Acid or Techno. But...

Some of the tracks pique his interest. They have a dark, early 80s synth heavy sound which reminds him of both the Synth Pop of his youth, and the mysterious music filtering out of those Belgian clubs as a child...

He has to wait till the very end of the album for the best of these - a track called 'Flesh' by A Split Second. The fascinating sleeve notes of the L.P. tell the story of how an already banging tune in the established Belgian style of 'Electronic Body Music' was played at the wrong speed (33 1/3 and +8 on the Technics deck) by an Antwerp DJ called Fat Ronny. The club went wild, and a new genre was born - Belgian producers trying to replicate the slower groove and dark timbres of this fateful bit of serendipity. The UK schoolboy gets more than a little obsessed by the tune...

The lad in question went on to form a career in dance music production, and after 25 years has decided to revisit this important and very personal piece of nostalgia, fashioning a complete, respectful and sample free rework of the track based on it's 'go slow' speed. 

This one is for the music mad schoolkid in all of us...

Leftfield DJ Mix - When The Freaks Come Out (May 2014)

With Harri & Domenic at the helm, Subculture has endured like no other underground club night in the world and is now firmly established as the longest running weekly on the planet.

Already this year the Sub Club's intrepid duo have taken the 20YSC celebrations on the road to festivals such as Stop Making Sense & Unknown in Croatia, to some stellar club venues in Europe such as Trouw in Amsterdam, Kaiku in Helsinki, Panorama Bar in Berlin, and on to Ibiza where they dropped in at The Zoo Project, and let it all hang out at the infamous Pikes Hotel.

Closer to home, they set the standard at the opening party for this year's Warehouse Project (with a follow up WP date in December still to come), and have hit other top UK spots in Belfast, Manchester, Edinburgh and of course London where, aside from a regular slot at Dance Tunnel, they have rocked the rafters at Plastic People, Nest, XOYO and Fabric.  

With their superb music collections, technical abilities second to none, and an unrivalled sensibility when it comes to moving the dance floor, Harri & Domenic have a special place in the hearts of most of the Glasgow club community.

Domenic recorded this mix ahead of this Saturday's final residents session of 2014. 

This week at Subculture heralds of the season ahead, your residents draw the line and double up once again to steer you straight into the impending festivities. Don't fight it, feel it, as we take it all the way to 4am.

The Phonica series drifts Amsterdam way for the next addition in its series with not one but two of the cities most prominent artists. Kamma & Masalo supply separately in their sets nothing but magical moments so when you have the chance to see them play together it is that times two and some. Never knowing what the direction and vibe their set will go - having roots in eclectic and disco vibes as well clubbier house, techno and acid sounds (a vibe they cement firmly at their Brighter Days party in Amsterdam) - they have firmly placed themselves on top shelf list of some of Europes finest selectors.  Appearing regularly at festivals like Dekmantel and Japan's Rainbow Disco Club to name a few, the duo have played some of the best clubs around the world. For Phonica 131 Kamma and Masalo have the dancefloor in mind with a mix focused on their beginnings in the underground club scene of their upbringing. We had a quick chat with them about the mix and what they have coming up!
