subglow/Live 1: Baptist Goth

subglow/live returns with a special recording from @beatricemasters & @bambi-dj, two of the best in the game right now. A special closing set between friends - in Bea's words:

"This mix was closing Supercamp festival’s last ever edition, from 6 to 8pm on a sunday. Therefore we thought we do a reverse journey of intensity, starting with 140 pressure taking our time to slow all the way down to 120 during the 2hours - hitting 130 with mellow dub techno cuts or classic-feel ukg, and ending with a series of (very) warm closing tracks upon closing tracks. You’ll know by now that Bambi and Beatrice M. are pretty different in their approach to DJing, which makes it all the more interesting and fun for them to find the lovely middle ground they pleasantly settle in during their b2bs. For this one, the key word is: dub. »

An incredibly special recording from Hewan Aman @hewanaman live from pe:rsona festival last year. 

From Hewan:
"The set is all playful, dubby, tecky, with some psy vibes and also a bit of deep and introspective bits. I played on a hot, sweaty afternoon during day 2—just as the sun was starting to cool down and the music heads that made up this special crowd were starting to get in all their feels. LOIF took over after me with his live set, carrying us into the darker hours of the night with his sexy psy vibes. It was such a magical moment, and I’m so glad to have it captured in this recording!"

"This set is a recording from my closing set on NYE at London’s Venue MOT. As someone who is probably just as in love with curating as I am with DJing, I get really excited when I connect with a line up & understand what role I might have to play in the unfolding of the night. This one had a bit of everything, Djrum / mama snake / priori / jon k / jossy mitsu & I really wanted to bring something special together to reflect the array of sounds across the night whilst also keeping it quite fun and nostalgic. A nod to that special energy that we all feel on New Years Eve where everyone wants to hug their friends and tell them they love them. The set starts with a fun peak time energy before melting away into some slower sludgy sounds. By the end of the night there were only a few people left floating around the dance floor, everyone with their heads down and eyes closed, just swaying their bodies. My favourite time of night."

A: Live edge, live wire

Q: Describe the story behind Razrbark's Specific Heat.

A: Specific Heat measures how resistant (or not) substances are to temperature changes, specifically how much energy is needed to raise the temperature of something by one degree. This concept from chemistry has always stuck with me and is something I thought of after listening to the finished product of this mix/let's be real I just think it sounds cool.

When I first started prepping for this mix, I went in a very different direction and had a rough draft, but it felt tedious, trying to force ideas and tracks in a way that required a lot of energy with little output. Sometimes, things pour out of you and sometimes, they don't. 

One day, a very exciting booking came through (spoiler alert: it was Honcho @ Hot Mass). With the adrenaline rush of the booking, I immediately started mixing tracks from the extremes of my USB, and everything flowed really easily. I decided to hit record, and it came together in a way that felt much more organic. I also unearthed many tracks I had forgotten about that were collecting cobwebs on my stick but that I always loved.

Anyway, all this to say, just like in chemistry, sometimes you need the right conditions for a reaction to truly take off~~~

Q: What is your ideal dancefloor (fictional or real).

The Bronze.

Q: When is the last track that made subs glow for you?

To me this is the perfect track. I played it at Hot Mass in Pittsburgh sometime after 6am a bit slower than this. I love how it has so much raw power behind it. Big chug NRG. I've always loved this song from the same band. It has a very Iggy Pop/Plastic Bertrand sensibility to it, but I've never been able to play it on a dance floor, so I was happy when I found this edit that is a bit more dance floor friendly and still has the rock/dance vibe that I feel is a hallmark of my sound.

Another track:
I just played this song towards the end of my set at Afterlife in Seattle this weekend. The bass was so intense my drink literally bounced across a table and fell to the floor. I'd say the subs were glowing hard.

Q: What track/artist was a musical game-changer for you?

A: Föllakzoid. It's psych rock, it's techno, it's everything. Each time I've seen them play, it's world-building and expansive. 

Q: If this mix was a book or a movie what would it be? 

A: It would be in Walk Hard Part 2, when Dewey goes through his drum and bass era.

CCL launches their subglow label with Rebuild, an EP from Bristol club provocateur @georg-i, featuring remixes from Metrist and the elusive B. McQueen.

After years of lighting up the dance floor at subglow and serving as a cornerstone in club sets, Rebuild is finally getting an official release to the public. georg-i’s previous releases on Perko’s FELT and aya & BFTT’s YCO imprints have established him as an incendiary club constructor probing the fringes of contemporary dance music. The release will be accompanied by poetry from subglow co-conspirator and artist Nadia Marcus, co-founder of Berlin experimental publishing platform TABLOID Press.

Informed by the restlessness of living in an apocalyptic present and the desire to rebuild the broken systems surrounding us, Rebuild is influenced by math rock's feverish and cataclysmic energy, eschewing conventional club BPMs in favour of dizzying tempo trickery and polymetric wizardry. “Torn In Two” gets off to a slow, chugging start, with raucous synths riffing over emphatic drums, but soon swirls into a juddering, pointillistic frenzy. “Bridging The Gap” is a cathartic shout, an acidic crescendo whose triplet meter offers tempo-transitioning opportunities for adventurous DJs who don’t mind a bit of maths. “Communication” gallops along cathartically through ricocheting synths and drums, unfolding into a thrilling breakdown. On remix duties, B. McQueen re-imagines “Torn In Two” as a sultry, dubbed-out roller, charting groove across a heady plain, while Metrist’s ambitious rework of “Communication” amps up the tension and primes it for a peak-time dancefloor sometime in the next millennium.

The recording is from a night at Ohm back in March put on by Kontinuum and New World Dysorder. I remember feeling so comfortable with the space and the crowd who were up for good sound system pushing fun going freely through everything from d&b and elektro to freetek and jungle. “A recording from pe:rsona in France, one of the most memorable sets of the summer for me!! 

I felt a connection to this crowd in particular and that’s not something that happens often. A lot of this is down to the people behind this festival, the pe:rsona/Positive Education crew are very intentional with what they do, they champion and support a lot of artists who aren’t necessarily ‘big names’. I think this cultivates a crowd that trusts in their curation, they’ve fostered this really special energy. 

I played on Friday night between two live sets, Christian Coiffure and Renslink. They are two incredible acts to be sandwiched in-between which inspired the set to evolve the way it did.

"Here's my two (and a bit) hour set from Field Maneuvers back in August, my favourite festival in the world.

This was by far the most time I've ever spent preparing for a single set or mix—I probably went through 10-15 crates of tracks, obsessing over flow, texture and tempo. Eventually, I landed here: an expression of love for dance music at 174/140 BPM.

After learning the recorder malfunctioned on the night, I quickly re-recorded it to ensure I reflected the flow of the night as closely as possible.


The set represents exactly what I personally wanna hear on massive sound systems right now and is a love letter to the hours danced in that field with my best friends.

We’re so thrilled to publish this incredible recording of one of the most beautiful and healing memories on the subglow dancefloor — NM DJ’s set artfully descended from 160bpm into a soulful mid tempo deepness that feels increasingly rare on Berlin dancefloors — inciting warmth, heavenly groove, and many tears along the way. 

"The DJs Ceci has booked often leave me awestruck, especially when I hear a paradigm of mixing that feels more like sculpting: sound is made almost visibly malleable, without clear borders of where one track ends and another begins, and reality in that nightclub is warped, refolded, churned. I’m more basic I guess – I’m just a girl who loves her deep cuts and her vocals. And what defines “deep”? To me it’s a track’s capacity to hold both abstraction (spatial, textural, tonal) and soul, regardless of genre. If a door to the divine could be hinged in it, then it’s deep. At the end of a party, if the floor was hot, my mind is already so bent and the body so broken, that’s all I want. Or, as D’Bora Rivers sings in the canonical “Ncameu” that ends the set, “something strong and sweet, like honey in my drink…”
