There are few names as widely loved in clubland as Bristol-based producer Omar McCutcheon, AKA Batu.

His label Timedance, currently celebrating its ten-year anniversary, has been instrumental in shaping a certain corner of contemporary electronic music. It champions a mutant, rhythmic, UK-flavoured sound that escapes any obvious genre touchstones, as well as spotlighting the careers of artists like Verraco, Ploy and Hodge who push musical and cultural boundaries.

In this Exchange, McCutcheon sat down with Resident Advisor's editor, Gabriel Szatan, in London to reflect on the label's Afrofuturist philosophy, its journey over the past decade and the sense of purpose and direction that have developed over time. He spoke about the impact that scenes beyond the UK—such as China, South Africa, Brazil and Mexico—have had on his productions and label curation, and how they offer fresh perspectives that contrast with Europe's sometimes overly nostalgic take on dance music. He also discussed finding positivity in a dark time, and music's enduring potential to inspire and connect.

"Here's my two (and a bit) hour set from Field Maneuvers back in August, my favourite festival in the world.

This was by far the most time I've ever spent preparing for a single set or mix—I probably went through 10-15 crates of tracks, obsessing over flow, texture and tempo. Eventually, I landed here: an expression of love for dance music at 174/140 BPM.

After learning the recorder malfunctioned on the night, I quickly re-recorded it to ensure I reflected the flow of the night as closely as possible.


The set represents exactly what I personally wanna hear on massive sound systems right now and is a love letter to the hours danced in that field with my best friends.

Ok, I might exaggerate a bit here, but the Sex Tags Mania label has been Tagged many things. “They just don’t care”, one fan once said in an interview. Well, they do care, do what they believe in, being die-hard vinyl lovers and all. Ever persistent in their curiosity for new and old sounds, the Norwegians have been running their Bergen-based label since 2004. DJ Sotofett and DJ Fett Burger are also great artists, just take a look at their<a href="http://sextags.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> work</a>. This is a place where the aesthetic of old-school Chicago flyers clashes with black and white mutations of comic heroes of yonder: No wonder their Tag line runs "Graffiti can't be stopped.". DJ Sotofett's mix is an assemblage of some of his  classic house favourites: Be sure not to miss the part where he does his shout-outs in Norwegian.
