In October 2001, a small fishing boat left Indonesia with over 400 people en route to Australia dreaming of safety, reuniting with family and building a home. Tragically, 353 people died when the SIEV X sank. The background to this horrific event was John Howard's 2001 election during which people seeking asylum were demonised and scapegoated. We commemorate the SIEV X, and honour those who lost their lives and remember their families 20 years on.

Human rights such as freedom of speech and religion are often invoked by many Australians and even many politicians, but did you know Australia is the only democracy without a federal Bill or Charter of Rights?

To discuss this issue, SubjectACT's Nathan Gubler sat down with Tim Vines, Vice President of Civil Liberties Australia, and Sam Tierney, a Board member of CLA and an ACT solicitor. Tim talks about how a Bill or Charter would function to ensure human rights are better protected in law on a federal level, while Sam talks about how the ACT's own Human Rights Act 2004 has been used to protect human rights in the territory.

And a happy Wattle Day to you, our beloved SubjectACT listeners! But what exactly is Wattle Day anyway, where did it come from and why, unlike Australia Day and ANZAC Day, has this long-standing Australian national day seen a bit of a decline over the years? 

To discuss this and more, SubjectACT's Nathan Gubler spoke with Terry Fewtrell, President of the Wattle Day Association Inc., which is based in Canberra. Also discussed is Australia's often confused history with national symbols, and the importance and function of national days in the context of mounting criticism of Australia Day - and Terry's conviction that Wattle Day can be sort to resolve this tension.
