Things heat up with Retrograde, arguably the standout cut of the release, where a driving techno bassline and a uniquely filtered chord hook take center stage. White Owl Records are a vinyl and digital label based in
Brooklyn, USA who have a focus on live and machine-
driven techno from its wonderful underground scene.
Piner is not only a co-founder of White Owl making a
return with his second EP, he is also half of the Drim
duo who have released on the imprint with exciting
new music. Drawing on live hardware performances,
‘Daybreak’ blends mesmerising machine sounds with
abstract grooves, creating dance floor ready, quirky jams.
The title track “Daybreak” opens up a bright landscape
of seductive harmonics and unfolding atmospheres,
spiralling with a dark yet hopeful tone.
“Implicit Messages” throbs with distorted drums while off-
kilter synthetic artefacts unfold hypnotically and add an
eerie yet dance floor ready aesthetic.
The momentum increases with “Doors to Nowhere,”
in which a sparse lead grounds a swell of agitated
percussion and spacey textures.
The final track, “Godless,” balances atmospheric loops
which modulate behind jacking drums for a tearaway,
high-octane trip.
Piner’s follow-up EP injects leftfield sound design
practices and syncopated percussive riffs into the
skeleton of propulsive, dissociative techno.
