Drum & bass is often reassuringly structured and formulaic; tracks made up of beats, bars and phrases. These units of musical measure provide the foundations for MCs and vocalists alike to lay their souls on the line. Jaye ‘Siege’ Balmer has spent his life in the 16 and returns to Soulvent with another 4 track EP, underpinned by some stellar production, that further brandishes the hype-man’s ability to get lyrical.

Opening with a slew of varying hi-hats, ‘Drawn To Leave’ is an emotive tune that sees Siege reflect on his past in an introspective fashion. Calming keys and warm low end provide the perfect setting for these expressive musings. 

‘Plastic People’ is a weighty club belter with punchy drums and simmering, twinkling synths. While the lyrics explore the idea that not everyone you meet is as they appear, Siege’s carefully crafted bars also complement the swelling bassline with the meticulous, ready-for-anything approach of a certain well seasoned international spy. 

‘Wide Open’s rousing intro has all the hallmarks of a euphoric dancefloor banger and the  infectious vocal hook will no doubt have you singing along within a few listens. A welcome melodic change of pace for the Bristolian bar slinger but an equally successful transition. 

Last up, ‘Template’ colours outside the lines providing the grittier, tearout element of the EP. Smatterings of vocal intersperse the glitchy, pulsing soundscape on offer, producing a satisfying and hypnotic final product.

[A] Kaii Concept – Thinking About U:
The Nu Dawn EP series returns with its 4th installment and opens with an NVR newcomer Kaii Concept and his track Thinking About U. A Liquid Drum & Bass track with inspiration deriving from the funk era, which becomes evident from the get go, as you are immersed in catchy synths and addictive vocals. Continuing to explore the experimental side to his production style, Kaii Concept contributes to the Nu Venture catalogue with an uplifting energetic tune featuring funky bass lines, elevating pads and a rolling dance floor beat to complete the unique feel good groove of Thinking About U.

[B] Ground Unit – Nostalgia:
Ground Unit returns to Nu Venture Records to present his emotional Liquid Drum and Bass track Nostalgia. From the beginning the all embracing natural strings from the intro emit a warm feeling and strong sense of sentiment, alongside the sweeping female vocals, as the sombre nature of this track begins to reveal itself. The drop releases a deep bass and mesmerizing synth pluck along with the atmospheric strings to culminate in a compelling feeling of nostalgia reminiscent of days gone by.

[C] Foreign Shores – The Palms:
Foreign Shores presents a feel good Liquid Drum & Bass track that opens with a soft chord progression and playful arpeggios, before dropping into a deep and dark bassline, working in tandem with the chords and twinkling arps. Progressing from the drop we see the introduction of a bright and catchy sax solo coming to the forefront to personify the enthusiastic nature of this track. In the build up to the second drop a lead synth is teased that punches through the mix with some minor undertones before returning to the positive and rolling vibes that The Palms exudes.

With perfect 20/20 vision, nobody could have predicted a year like 2020. But what has been a difficult year for us all, has been a great year for music.

Ant TC1 has hand-picked his favourite tracks from a feature-packed year of high-quality drum and bass. Choosing just 20 tracks from 40 releases and 2 LPs has been a difficult task, but we’re proud to be able to present the sound of Dispatch in 2020 from this incredible list of artists.

Born in London, raised in Budapest and now thriving in the heart of Bristol, it's been a real journey so far for Sonic Rain, real name Boris Garland. Training as a classical pianist from a young age, and energised by the influences of scene lynchpins Symmetry Recordings and Metalheadz, it's clear to hear there's something really special in the making here. Treading softly and methodically between the sharp, driven breaks of 'Unity' and the flowing, wonderfully eerier sonds found here on 'Polar Field'; there's a soulful yet prominently vintage aesthetic etched within his writing process... almost, the subliminal peaks and caveats of the written word, frolicking in the musical artform. It's lovely stuff, and forms an integral part of 'Foundations Vol 3', the third iteration of Melinki's Four Corners Music's commitment to the new-gen, and they always deliver on this compilation.
