Those of you that spend any time with me know how excited I get when particular months in Bozeman are filled to the brim with musical treats. Last April blew my mind (Future Islands, The Cave Singers and Sea Wolf), I'm still recovering. Last July hit me pretty hard, too (Roadkill Ghost Choir, Hollow Wood, and Ages and Ages). Well, this month is kind of freaking me out. Rubblebucket is opening for Body Language October 7th (yes, that's in less than 2 days), Blitzen Trapper is playing October 25th and Lonesome Shack is playing October 28th. I have been looking forward to this month since....July, I suppose! For the rest of the month, my playlists will feature one or two songs by each of these bands. I can't tell you how worth it is to see live music! We're so fortunate to get these talented musicians here so don't miss out! Oh, and the reason for the title of this playlist is that I lost my black leather jacket riding my bike today from my house to work. So, if you see a black leather jacket with a hood on Kagy from the Kagy Korner Store area to 19th or from 19th to Technology Park (on College and 19th), please let me know. I miss it very much already. 

1. I could write a book about how much I adore this band. Blitzen Trapper holds a special place in my heart for many reasons. One reason is that they faithfully come back to Bozeman every year to play a show at the Filling Station. Another reason is that they give me the best (worst?) rock-lash I have ever experienced, every time I see them live. Sometimes even while just listening to them in the car. In fact, a friend and I were sent an hour off course on a road trip because we missed an exit due to the head banging that was occurring while listening to Blitzen Trapper. These fellas have been cranking out tunes together for nearly forever and they released their newest album, VII last year.  AND get this. They'll be back for their annual rock session October 25th at the Filling Station! I think it's already over 3/4 sold out and it's still about 3 weeks away so if you want to experience some Blitzen Trapper magic, get yourself a ticket ASAP! 2. So last week I featured a song by Body Language. Well, I'm doing that again this week because I want to reiterate the fact that you may very well hear these songs this Tuesday at the Zebra. Rubblebucket (see track #4) is opening for Body Language and I'm beginning my mental and physical preparation to dance my face off that night. I heard Rubblebucket on NPR's All Songs Considered (big surprise...) and fell for their new single "Carousel Ride." I immediately went to find them on Facebook and was shocked to see that the first hit that came up when I searched for them was a show here in Bozeman. This was back in July that I heard about this even and it's been in my calendar ever since. Later on, I found out that it was Body Language that was headlining. I'm still not sure if I believe it because it seems too good to be true but I'm going to take a leap of faith. Why and how these two Brooklyn-based bands put Bozeman on their list of places to stop, I don't know and I don't care. All I know is I'm going to be there. 3. This band makes me weak at the knees, and the elbows, and the wrists, and the ankles and the hips? Now I'm just naming joins. But really, they had me at "Fitzpleasure", July 6th of 2012. I remember the exact run I was on when I heard it on Hype Machine's monthly radio show. It literally stopped me in my tracks. An Awesome Wave, their first album that came out later in 2012, was everything I had hoped for. The, a miracle happened and I was able to see them in Seattle the following spring. It was just as beautiful as I had hoped. I wanted more, though. And so did everyone else who was a fan. We waited patiently for 2 years and this past summer they teased us by slowly releasing one track at a time. Then finally, in September, This Is All Yours came out once again it is a stunningly unique concoction of sounds, unexpected vocals and combinations of instruments that makes Alt-J, Alt-J. My absolute favorite track on this new album is "Lovely Day" but it was not available on SoundCloud. This song, "Every Other Freckle," was one of the songs they released earlier this year and is one of my other favorites on the album. 

4. Rubblebucket rolls of the tongue. Say it out loud. It really does! The front-gal in this band rocks. She is chalked full of punk and roll passion. The band backs her up with percussion, flutes (yes, flutes), guitar AND brass. As I mentioned above, I heard "Carousel Ride" a while back and pretty much blasted it on repeat in the car for a week. Since it's off of Rubblebucket's new album, Survival Sounds, I'm sure they'll whip it out this Tuesday!

5. When I was driving back from Butte today, Matt and Kim came on my iPod. There is nothing better than this band for driving on a blue bird day like today. They create the happiest sounds. Each song is like a little piece of candy for my ears. I heard "Daylight" for the first time back in 2009 while studying abroad in Norway and it took every part of my being to not go dancing down the hallways of my new hostel, potentially scaring off all of my newly acquired international friends. It's off of their 2009 album, Grand. In 2010 they released another album, Sidewalks. Bag of Skittles it is. Each tune a sun-shiney fruity delight. I can't say much for their latest album, Lightning, as I haven't listened to it yet, but I don't doubt it's as sweet and juicy as their other albums. Hopefully no one is reading this at night time and getting the munchies. 

6. Typhoon is a not a band. It's a BAND X 2. I say X 2 because there are about a dozen people (maybe a baker's dozen?) in this band. Listen to their music and know that every single sound you hear; every instrument, every voice, every twang, strum, beat, and shout is coming from a talented, music-loving human being. I would absolutely love to see this band live. They were actually in Bozeman a few years ago but sadly they weren't on my radar yet so I missed them. If they ever come through here again, I promise I won't miss it. They tell the most beautifully honest stories with their music, each song part of a bigger picture. All of their songs are thick and full-bodied, with so many layers of sounds and vocals. "Summer Home" is off of their 2011 EP, A New Kind of House. Though the Portland-based band has been making music since 2005, I only started paying attention last year when they released White Lighter, their most recent album. It's easily one of my top 10 favorite albums from 2013. 

7. June of this last summer, some ladies and I went on an epic road trip to see friends, family and MUSIC. Blitzen Trapper was on the itinerary (of course) and was partially the inspiration for the whole trip (as was Ages and Ages). Blitzen Trapper was playing at the Bartlett in Spokane, WA and we got to the show early. Really early because we don't mess around. We didn't know who the opening band was yet but the second they started, we were in deep. Lonesome Shack opened for Blitzen Trapper in Spokane and the moment I heard them, I knew I needed more. I walked away from the show with their most recent record, More Primitive, and a hand tie-dyed t-shirt. These three extremely talented gentleman (and they truly are gentleman) are based out of Seattle and, don't lose your cool, ARE PLAYING HERE IN BOZEMAN AT THE FILLER OCTOBER 28th. 8. Geographer has been around since 2006 when they formed in San Francisco. The velvety sometimes haunting vocals plus the cello give this electro-pop group a sound that I can't really compare to anyone else. Lucky for us, they passed through Missoula this summer and played at the Top Hat on a Tuesday night. I had never seen an electric cello before but it was pretty darn cool! Looked alien but sounded the same. Despite the awkward show timing and the fact that it wasn't wall to wall with people, they played as if they were playing a sold out show in San Francisco, as I'm sure they've done. "Lover's Game" was one of my new favorites after seeing them perform it live in Missoula this summer. It's just SO bouncy. You'll see what I mean. 

9. The Eels have been around for over a decade dropping familiar tunes like "Saturday Morning." They've released over 10 albums and in this time, which seems nearly impossible. "Fresh Blood" is a favorite of mine and it's gritty, dark sound fits perfectly with the Halloweeny feel of October. 

10. So, I know the start of this song is sort of interesting. Maybe it doesn't sound like it will lead you to a musical place you want to go but give it at least 2 minutes. Well, give it the whole song, actually. I was a little put off by the first minute when I heard this song a few years ago but for some reason I trusted it and kept listening and what the song unfolded into was a peaceful track that made me close my eyes and smile. You might recognize the vocals and other sounds in this song if you listen to Vampire Weekend or Discovery.

Blitzen Trapper is based in Portland, OR. There are six of them in the band and they’ve been together since 2000. Over the course of their four full-length albums to date, including their revelatory 2008 Sub Pop release Furr, front man Eric Earley’s considerable poetic talents and his band’s hard-earned chops have gained them a growing international audience. The band’s continuing exploration of American music that spans from the ‘60s folk movement to the country sounds of the ’70s, to the pop balladry and prog rock of the ’80s has earned it notice ranging from Rolling Stone magazine to late-night network television to Yo Gabba Gabba, among a great many others. In January 2009 and again in January 2010, Earley and a few of his bandmates entered the attic studio of lauded Portland musician and studio engineer Mike Coykendall (Bright Eyes, M Ward, She & Him) to work on what would become Destroyer of the Void. And the resulting new album takes Blitzen Trapper further than ever before, building on the band’s seamless marriage of the familiar and the fantastic to, literally, create an otherworldly experience.
