Becoming your true self is a game often played in inches. Pockets of discovery and growth can appear behind the obscurity of frustration, leading to stretches of brilliance. It’s a visual Evan Brock ties to his latest project. Speaking about the records in its canon (debut Slowly Spiraling Towards the Light and the forthcoming I can feel an ending), “moments of Laika Songs are supposed to sound like when you look up through the trees and can see a little sky peeking through, and the light hits the leaves just right.”

The intersection of the natural and the artificial is where Laika Songs gains most of its inertia. Fragmented synth lines intermingle with everything from lumbering acoustic guitars to luxurious saxophones, bridging the gap between environmental zen and digital confusion. I can feel an ending expands the search for meaning first dispatched on the first LP by collaborating with a wide variety of musicians and friends to divine some clearer answers.

Emboldened by post-pandemic connectivity and the power of letting control fall to chance, Evan reached out to potential players with nothing but demos and deep knowledge of their musical histories. Anchored by sharp guitars, a woozy synth backdrop and airtight vocal harmonies, the new album Midnight Flowers which is produced by Bryce Goggin (Pavement, The Apples In Stereo, Swans, Antony & The Johnsons) came out on May 29, 2012. The band has toured with a variety of artists including the Lumineers, Portugal The Man, the Walkmen, Beady Eye, the Joy Formidable, Ben Kweller, Thrice, and Here We Go Magic.

The Dig's sound has been developing ever since the band's two singers Emile Mosseri and David Baldwin started making music together when they were eleven years old. After meeting California native Erick Eiser, the three songwriters have been writing tunes and playing in different bands together since they were in high school. Mark Demiglio (drums) moved to New York from Texas to join the band following the recording of "Midnight Flowers."
