Fractal Void - Elemental Collection

Fractal Void is an avant-garde duo based in Düsseldorf, Germany. Their experimental music blends electronic and contemporary genres located somewhere in the field of musical tension between ambient, drone, halfstep and floor-affine IDM. During their live sets, Fractal Void create vertical reflections by processing sounds through software and interaction with real instruments in every unique musical performance like the Chinese contemporary calligraphic practice Dishu.

Their debut album Elemental Collection unveils a dense and lavishly layered transformation of artificial organic signals, sculpting an auditory world filled with emotive landscapes, overgrown polyrhythms and futuristic elements. Embedded within each track are field recordings serving as the heartbeat of the album. Through innovative and expansive deconstruction, Fractal Void create an energetic and sometimes contemplative experience.

The persons behind Fractal Void:
Back in 2008, their musical journey began with winning a Spectrasonics competition using field recordings of a locker door, that was implemented as a bass synth. Their collaboration was continued as producers of the eight-piece electronic jazz project „Mothers of Guru“.

Marcus Scheltinga is a composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist. Besides studying jazz trombone at the Conservatorium Hilversum and the Folkwanghochschule, he works as a musical director, lecturer and coach in 39 countries around the world. From ZDF sound design to live and studio performances with international greats, his own productions have included such as Grammy winner Larry Carlton and Peter Erskine. Mid-east and Indian inspired, Marcus is a true story teller as a musician and composer.

BORGBORG is a producer and DJ. She moves freely in different styles of electronic music with a focus on avant-garde driving techno, dark hypnotic vibes seamlessly blended with deconstructed beats, noise and timeless elements of IDM. She is a member of About Repetition, a group of artists dedicated to the research of repetition through artistic means, collaborating with a wide range of other collectives across Europe and co-founder of the techno event series „SCHLEIFEN“.

DOC landed, some years ago, in a musical planet inhabited by all things psychedelic. DOC has a genre agnostic approach to his music selection. If it is mind-bending, ritualistic and hypnotic, it fits.

After 15 years as a DJ and producer, we can safely say that DOC has traveled through most styles and genres. From early years in hard techno free parties in Barcelona in the '00s to house, disco and techno events in London in the '10s, DOC has developed a broad music taste and vinyl collection during his artistic journey. Nowadays he picks from techno, ambient, breaks, house, dub and downtempo to create a trip of his own. His selections have taken him from his native Barcelona, to London, Amsterdam, or Tokyo. 

His monthly podcast, Selene Series, has been played at Operator Radio or K-Studio in the Netherlands. He also has collaborated with other renowned podcast series like Delayed, HOC Radio, Codecast, or Anodynic Frequencies, with thousands of plays on his sets. With Selene Series, DOC explores the different shapes that deep and psychedelic electronic music can take. Selene Series is a podcast that has been running for over 4 years and is released each full moon. With The Continuum, his Selene Series channel opened the doors for international guests to share their sounds on the platform.

The latest step on the Selene Series journey was to take the concept to the club, and on the 8th of February Laut, iconic club in Barcelona, hosted the first Selene Series event, with local talent DJ Berru and dutch maestro Shoal, as well as Selene’s curator DOC. 

This set is recorded during this special night: an euphoric an emotional selection within the ‘deep and psychedelic’ realm. A four to the floor exercise with the intention of bringing the club energy up, get the dancers ready for peak time, and celebrate the homecoming of the Selene project.

We celebrate the first week of the beautiful month of June with Joan Gila’s beautiful narratives. Enjoy the deep dream.

A passionate music lover and record collector for over half his life, Joan Gila is the curator of HOC Radio and the label known as red edge with releases by ABSIS and Bastien. Alongside Javi and his friend Jordi, with whom he runs the Binomi project, he co-hosts MostRadio from Mostra Festival.

Through chaos, cathartic soundscapes, and monolithic grooves, we are excited to introduce Marco Maldarella — @marcomaldarella — for this new episode. Producer and selector based in Bologna, Marco co-founded @sinestesie_s event and mix series. His project is rooted in a multidimensional approach, known for his collaboration with Christian Duka as MARMO, and his solo album Clinamen, released on @omenwapta.

At the crossroads of deep psychedelic techno and tribal sounds, Marco Maldarella dives into the depths of modern electronic music with a fast-paced and intense sonic signature.

For this mix, Marco delivers a raw tribe fast trance experience, where psychedelic elements collide with a dark groove reminiscent of ancient times. Drones, noise, and otherworldly voices define his unique style. The result is an intimate, introspective, and mental journey, featuring many of unreleased tracks.

Make sustained efforts to return to the sounds arising in your present moment, for your mission is only to listen to them, not to think about their meanings.
 
As time passes and you steep yourself in what you hear, you will discover an increasing number of sonic details around you. Each of these details will lead you to another; each sound will lead you to a neighboring one. At this point you will find that your inner voice gradually diminishes at the same rate by which you immerse yourself in your sonic environment.

How to Disappear

Temple is a space to disappear in sound. An aural shrine in which self dissolves.
This extract from Haytham El-Wardany book, How to Disappear, read by Philipp Rhensius aka Alienationist, seemed to encapsulate part of what I expected Temple and Espacio Perpendicular to be, and I thought it would make a nice intro.
 
From there, the selection was aimed at making it easy for the listeners to disappear in sound. Experimental noises to tickle the brain, moving to more melodic or tonal pads. A slow crescendo to some more ‘deconstructed beats’ shifting  towards a “4 to the floor” groove.  Horizontal start, seaweedy dance ending.

We are back on the channel after a little detour with our friends from Subradio, where we recorded what would have been the 59th page on the Selene Series adventure. The 60th one returns to the usual spot, and also returns with a selection that has become a tradition for us. 

The 'Buck Moon' as July's full moon is also known, happens to be the last one before we are headed to one of the best events of the year. And if you have been following us, you know that we are talking about Paral•lel Festival. We can't wait to spend 3 magical days in the mountains with you. 

And as we count down the days for this beautiful gathering, we could not resist preparing a mix featuring sounds from the artists that will be at the festival this year. A collage that we hope makes your wait a bit easier and gets you rolling for the epic experience we are getting ourselves into.

Yesterday night the full moon was shining in all its glory, and I was lucky to be enjoying the outdoors taking a weekend off clubbing. Maybe this is why this months episode of Selene Series, number 61, started off as an attempt to select some introspective breaky music. 

I love small sounds in big spaces. I feel that there is a lot of drum and bass, half-time, breaks, call it as you want music that channels that concept. Airy atmospheres and super precise, razor sharp percussions. That was the concept of the mix, at least at the start. But hey, often things get out of control and full on psychedelic craziness manifests... Nevertheless, this is how it turned out. For moments introspective, for moments not so much.

It's Sunday, and September's full moon is on an eclipse. 
Still feeling the hangover from what was an epic night with Muzan editions. Friends, great music, and energy through the roof. No wonder why we had to continue the night together elsewhere. 
And yet, I feel an influx of energy to combat the headache. So here comes episode 62nd of Selene Series. 

The moment is asking for hazy beats. Think atmospheric breakbeat, illbient, dubbed out breaks. Yes, some sloppy mixing. But hey, it was a bit challenging this time. From slow downtempo to 120 territory to 160 drum and bass/jungle. What matters is that this selection comes from the soul. Exactly how and what I feel in this precise moment. A great snapshot of what a foggy Sunday requires, musically, at least for me. My version of hangover music for you.

One of the most special things about curating this series is the opportunity to connect with like-minded, beautiful souls from around the world. Among them is none other than the lovely DOC, whom we warmly welcome to the series <3

If you've ever had the pleasure of meeting DOC, or even briefly chatted with him online, you’ll know just how deeply passionate and supportive he is about the music he loves. He carries a special, contagious energy that inspires those around him and resonates throughout his artistry as a gifted selector, producer, and curator of the incredible Selene Series / The Continuum podcast.

Today, we are deeply honoured and grateful to share a very special improvised live recording, generously gifted to us by DOC and his machines.

With music, we are always searching for a familiar feeling or experience - a kind of warm, comforting nostalgia - and we find it here, within this beautifully woven, abstract tapestry of sound.

A new full moon rises in the sky, and this time it marks 5 years since we have been sharing music each new rising. Our episode number 63 is indeed a birthday celebration for 5 years of sharing mixes. 

For this one we went to our true original passion. Yes, we love all sounds psychedelic and deep. We have explored ambient, downtempo, dub, breaks and half time... but techno is where we come originally from, and that 4 to the floor will always be our first love. This mix is a selection of modern psychedelic techno, exploring it's different flavours. For moments more stripped back, for moments more melodic or trancey, and at times loopey and repetitive. Always mind altering sounds anchored by that steady 4x4 we love.
