It Brought Me Down

Subskin Cables first emerged in Boston, slithering out of the same late-'80s and early-'90s gene pool that nurtured noisy, independent-rock champs such as Come and Green Magnet School. But the shadowy quartet stood apart from its contemporaries by smearing trippy songs with wandering, quasi-Moorish guitar solos, creaky tape loops, and disheveled, after-hours vibes. The plaintive, poetic vocals and loose melodies of front man Fernando Avila effortlessly blurred three decades of punk, post-punk, garage, and psychedelic goodness without seeming at all stylized or retro.

Fast forward to now. Having long ago relocated to New York City and burned through the DIY groups Sensesurround, Chocha, and Valetudo, Avila saw his music taking on increasingly Subskinned hues. So in 2017, he revived his previous band's name and proceeded to record a string of digital albums that brought the Cables into the present. 

The sixth and most current of these, Faceless in the Rapid Motion, streamlines his patented approach with heightened wisdom and focus. Lucid production, confident singing, and sure-footed playing have replaced the ragged murk of yore, as unapologetic pop hooks and meaty choruses penetrate the miasma. The untamed, exploratory guitars of Avila and Mark Bannayan still spiral into infinity, but they do so with purpose and control, bolted to the solid rhythm section of bassist Aaron Keane and Lithuanian free-jazz drummer Dalius Naujokaitis. Vigorous rehabilitations of older tunes—the catchy "I Found the Enemy," the snotty "Undercover Nightmare," and the sprawling "Simple"—fit snugly with concise, recent statements like "Illusion" and "It's My Crime." Original Massachusetts-era member Peter Gingerich even drops by to add discreet dollops of synth. And so, from 1980s Boston to 2020s Brooklyn, from narcotic racket to clear-eyed riff, the Subskin circle is exquisitely complete.
