Welcome to the 319th Chapter of the Deep Electronics serie. A weekly released serie that brings you a diversity into the abyss of deep electronic music. This week Wixdoom presents you a two and a half hour dubtechno set. A carefully created set for your enjoyment.

About Wixdoom:
Started as a trip-hop enthusiast at around 2015., although love 
for the genre still exists, Wixdoom's dub techno journey, as he says, 
was the most enlightened than any other form of music creation he 
ever felt. The production of the genre isn't currently bringing any 
imaginative shapes into reality, but the mixing procedure sees the 
light at the path. Mixes made for Dub Techno Blog and Deeptakt 
Records, and the one being self-released, show his current creativity 
works, and some of his tracks, mostly based as the ambiental 
structures, define the will for life, no matter in which way of Human 
activity you'll represent it!

Reclusive Tunes Podcast 33 (Dub Techno)

The story .. so far
In the beginning of the 1990s four guys got together in a basement studio on Bornholm (small island in the Baltic Sea) and founded Merv. The members at that time were Brian Oldenborg, Jan Christiansen, Johnnie Schmidt and Thomas Gylsen. Demo tapes were recorded on DAT and sent to a label in Copenhagen. The label was Mainline Records run by late Henrik Möll and Daniel Mortazavi. The label consisted of several sublabels including Dancecop, which was the label aiming for underground techno releases.

Merv debuted with the EP "Melted Vein" and despite a bad vinyl quality and sound at that time, the record attracted attention enough for years to come. In the following three years follow-up EPs were released, but it never really took off and the band started working with other projects. 

After several years of hiatus (17 years to be exact), a Berlin based label Styrax contacted Merv with the idea of doing a repress of two specific tracks - "Dust" and "Melted Vein". The guy behind the label was Steffen Laschinski aka Rising Sun.

It should not just be a re-press of the originals, but a remastered edition fixing all the audio flaws that were present on the old recordings.

In the meantime Johnnie Schmidt and Thomas Gylsen had left the band. Brian Oldenborg and Jan Christiansen met in the studio once again to look for the old DAT tapes containing the tracks. Luckily they were still intact and were recorded digitally and audio artefacts removed before they were sent to final re-mastering. The EP was named "Re-Melted" and the mastering was done at Dubplates and Mastering which was founded by none other than Basic Channel.

The original was not pressed in large numbers so the news about a repress with enhanced audio was very welcomed by the dub techno collectors. 

The reissue got so much attention that it was obvious to introduce Merv again as a band and in the following years Jan & Brian started producing tracks again.

It was a challenge to get the same vibe since all of the old equipment were long gone and replaced by software based synths and drum machines.

To reproduce the vibes of the Merv sound, analog mixer and synths were brought back in the studio together with the same effects units that shaped the sound in the 90s. 

The journey up until today has been quite a ride with lots of releases on dedicated vinyl labels like Minimood, Ranges, Subwax, Kontakt and many more.

subspiele: why did you call the mix "Valley Of Ethnotism" ?

synox: "Ethnotism" is a fusion between "Ethnic" and "Hypnotism", two words that perfectly express the ambiance I sought to create. A hypnotic mixture between electronic and ethnic sounds from India, Japan or Tibetan meditation music. 

This selection of tracks reminds me the beauty of the nature, when the twilight takes place in the mountains, morning or evening, the valleys become mysterious and you can feel a sort of spiritual atmosphere. 


subspiele: where did you record the mix ?

synox: The mix was recorded a saturday night in the studio at home but a part of the selection was made in the train during a trip...


subspiele: which is the song that you recently liked the most ?

synox: There are so many songs! 
But I can say that "Walk Into The Sound Forest" from Martin Nonstatic & Deni Diezer is 
for me one of the best track released on Sub.spiele records, really a complete work, 
all the elements are present, this track has a very beautiful universe.
Otherwise, in a really different music style, 2 vinyls that I bought gave me big chills, 
"Dj's Take Control" from SL2 (1991) and "Incredible" from M-Beat featuring General Levy (1994), 
back to the roots with jungle and hardcore breaks! 

subspiele: how do you feel now ?

synox: Really good, I'm glad to release and share this new meditative journey...

subspiele: how should it go on ?

synox: A lot of work, new projects, collaborations, event organization between Paris & Berlin, dub techno / ambient, tech house and drum & bass releases, new podcasts, new web site, new gigs, completely absorbed by the music!

subspiele: why did you call the mix "Gaia”?
Luijo: I wanted to create this particular project a very long time ago. It includes both audio and visuals. It is called “Gaia” as a reference to Mother Earth’s beauty. This offers you a pretty good idea of the journey’s mood: both light and dark paths as the music enmeshes the ambient.

subspiele: where did you record the mix?
Luijo: I recorded the mix in my studio in Santo Domingo, but not all the execution of the set was done here. The track and vinyl selection was carefully done in a mountain house owned by my friend Mike, located in Jarabacoa, La Vega, Dominican Republic, which is the site showed at the video. It helped me create a link between the actual mood I wanted to transfer with the music and the scenery.

Subspiele: which is the song that you recently liked the most?
Luijo: There is so much music I can’t really tell which tune I am currently liking the most, but in this project the song: Tomas Rubeck – Factions by ESHU Records, stands out in distinction. This deep techno record settles down as the mood specifier of the journey.

subspiele: how do you feel now?
Luijo: I feel fantastic, eager to start new music-based projects I have been planning along. This year I’ll be traveling around Europe and North America, playing, searching for new material and nurturing my inspiration. Also, I’ll keep collaborating with Arcticgrooves, Subspiele Records and some international radio stations and record labels accordingly with more mixes and productions.

subspiele: how should it go on?
Luijo: To keep sharing more music with the biggest humility possible is always my way to go on.

‘k’’: i’m currently reading, this year for the second time, paul schrader’s “taxi driver”. travis bickle buys some weapons at brooklyn corner. during this purchase he acquires a pistol, a .44 magnum. so, this weapon constantly plays a role throughout the rest of book, so it stuck to my memory..

subspiele: where did you record the mix ?
‘k’’: the podcast has been recorded in my flat in cologne, on a rainy evening.

subspiele: which is the song that you recently liked the most ?
‘k’’: this is difficult. maybe the remix of ping (hauschka)… as well rainer veil’s “vield”, but it’s not necessarily just the one song, rather the whole ep on modern love.

subspiele: how do you feel now ?
‘k’’: i’m feeling good, a bit stressed, but good. i really look forward to the summer, finally with lovely weather - with the possibility to sit in the park and listen to some good music.

subspiele: how should it go on ?
‘k’’: well, I would like to spend more time in making music again, meeting friends, playing some vinyl, drinking beer and malt, hanging around.
