Ultramajic goes for the jugular with the second chapter of its Metaphysix series after Aden and Creepy Autograph's first installment won over many new hearts in 2013 (particularly with the much-buzzed about "Whip") while keeping existing acolytes very happy.

Inspired in equal parts by legends of early Detroit music and arcane philosophical-religious concepts, these are savage drum tracks slimmed down to their meanest and leanest states - dance music at an elemental level, pure rhythmic bliss that would do past drum machine wizards like Plastikman very proud while sitting nicely alongside modern operations like Night Slugs' Club Constructions series. It's no surprise, then, that Night Slugs co-founder L-Vis 1990 makes an appearance here under his Dance System alias with the rugged "RZ1", effortlessly bridging the gap between forward UK styles and vintage Detroit soul. Matrixxman steps up to the plate in a big way with the hard drum rolls of "Simulation" and two different incarnations of the jacking, rimshot-crazy "Stop It". Creepy Autograph is back for his second appearance in the Metaphysix series with a ferocious remix of "Simulation" while Lando (formerly Lando Kal) rounds things out with "Loveplay", adding soulful vox and bouncing synths to the machinelike motif.

All in all this a lethal set of no-frills, drum machine-inspired workouts that demonstrate the "less is more" maxim with sterling results, revealing each artist to be a virtuoso of rhythm and Edgar to be a consummate curator. Complete with magickal cover art by Jimmy Edgar and Pilar Zeta reportedly made while traveling in Egypt, there is indeed much magic to be mesmerized by here.

Take a look over Ashley Burchett’s back catalogue and you’ll find the Greater London resident has played an understated yet influential role in purporting British techno. Fifteen years ago Burchett’s prevailing Ø [Phase] project debuted on Sheree Rashit and Steve Bicknell’s Cosmic Recordings before providing Cosmic ID with its final record in 2002, and since 2007 Burchett's helped mould and define the sound of Token by becoming the label’s marquee artist.

In 2013 the Belgian imprint finally coaxed the debut album from Ø [Phase], Frames Of Reference, described in Tony Naylor’s 4/5 review for Resident Advisor as, “a techno album of real imagination and depth that, when it needs to be, is brutally functional.” Almost two years since its release Ø [Phase] is back with Alone In Time?, his second studio album which adds to the continuous slew of unrivalled long players Token has put out of late. Token spreads the 11-tracks on Alone In Time? across three heavy weight discs, and the music further demonstrates Burchett’s deft skill in linear arrangements shaped to fit the warehouse frame, while painting a colourful, Detroit influenced side to his productions yet to really be heard to this extent before.

This uncharted sound of Ø [Phase] can be found in tracks like “Remote”, the album’s homage to electro, to the jittery, alien grooves of “Spacialize”, “Mo_del” and “Nep-tune”. There’s big room domination on productions like “Orbitron” and “R-Mash”, while the album’s title-track is a journey through Burchett’s conceptual references to cosmology, time and isolation. Burchett explains, "it was always an intention to make another album and now just felt like the right time. Life moves on, we change and grow. As lessons get learned and ideas form, the desire to express them gradually manifests."

Furthermore, Burchett adds, “Frames Of Reference was about overcoming personal struggles and challenges, while Alone In Time? is more forward facing.” With an extensive back catalogue in his wake, Ø [Phase] has become a relied source for the discerning techno DJ and these new, expertly crafted club cuts add to his ever-expanding pool of productions for selectors to choose from, and it’s clear, if the bouncing rhythm of “Blind Eye” and orchestral epic of “The Maze” is anything to go by, Ø [Phase] isn’t only head strong, but standing tall.

'Shards of your wholeness shimmers through everything'] by Toffes Värld (formerly known as Kris Dubinsky] is a tale in which familiar environments are permeated by mystery as a crackling perception of reality awakens from the campfire. When the winds arise, our sails rise with it, taking us drifting deep into ourselves while the fire struggles to keep us warm and safe. But the winds are strong.

As we are washed up at the end of the river, exhausted by the long and uncanny journey that took us so far beyond, we're received by the comfort of our rising sun. Rising with it on to our feet we recognize suddenly where we truly belong and the memories of the bizarre vistas of yesterday will forever be there to remind us.

This recording was made during a late night studio session at home in Toronto. The approach taken for this session was very much an experiment of the various functionalities of synths and how different manipulations of parameters affect each other. By carefully and slowly altering multiple elements (lfo's time signatures, ADSR, filters, delays, sub osc, frame speed, F.M modulation, harmonic offsets, tuning and a few others), until a frequency spectrum that utilizes space and a desired combination was achieved, then go on to set the automation macros for a live take. . In the final phase I fully articulate the psychoacoustic space, working with panning, eq, distortion, abstraction, and reverb. I further edit and structure the parts that begin to make sense and feel right. I compose in a very structural manner at first with Ableton, to ultimately create a work environment where random rhythms, resonances and expressions manifest themselves and unexpected harmonics come to light, also eliminating limitations and opening up possibilities many times even surprising myself with the final piece.
