This month's guest mix comes from the talented young composer, pianist, and label owner Sergio Diaz De Rojas @bonjoursergio.  With releases on famed labels like 7K!, Sonder House, or Deutsche Grammophon, as well as an impressive output on his very own Piano & Coffee Records, this Peruvian musician is taking the world by storm. He prepared a mellow, delicate, and intricate journey alongside an insightful interview for us.

Subtempo Mix 030 - Sergio Díaz De Rojas

Balancing ambient sound design alongside warm organic techno and ripples of delicate electronics; British-born, Canadian-based, Grammy-nominated composer, producer, and musical director @Matt-Robertson is set to release his new album ‘Enveleau’. It follows his warmly received ‘In Echelon‘ (2016) and ‘Entology’ (2018) albums, described as “symphonic electronica and leftfield techno that’s cinematic in scale” (Mixmag), “evocative, expansive, and original” (Electronic Sound), “magnificent...wild, electronic sound” (The Line Of Best Fit) and “Nils Frahm’s modern classical meets Jon Hopkins’ grainy techno” (MOJO).

“I love how the sonics of some records immediately put the listener in a comfortable space - just from the sound of an opening chord, you can be placed in a space and time. I am trying to achieve something similar to this on ‘Enveleau’, really concentrating on what the sounds make you feel, as a separate thing to what the harmony and the pitch make you feel. I’ve used a lot of different recordings I made outside, including natural textures wrapped into the drum sounds. It gives the record a sense of place.”

“Enveleau is a word I am taking to mean a sense of envelopment in your surroundings, and trying to take some comfort in that. In a sense, gratitude. The name also has a lot to do with water and how it flows along the easiest path. 2020 was a really challenging year for everyone. I think I found a sense of ease by concentrating on my family and getting outside if I could. The cover is a photo of an area near where I live, and it really captures a sense of the stillness that I have been trying to find within the past year.”

SBTMP020 – We Beat A Different Drum [Previews]

Who better than the wonderful Léo @leo-booka to wrap up the 5-year celebrations with a bow? This man is a myth, a true selector where there was one, with remarkable range and taste. One of my first influences, he has inspired me many times over and over the years and continues to do so.

From underground raves in the '90s to clubs or festivals, the past three decades have witnessed an eclectic musical journey for Léo, back to his roots under the Zeon moniker, he delves into a world of ambient beats and blissed-out textures crafting a warm sonic dialogue with a deep sense of hypnotism and spirit.

This month's mix comes from Jack Lever (@jack_lever), UK-based musician, label owner, graphic designer and frequent Synkro collaborator. Jack’s music productions span a decade of downtempo breakbeat electronica. Subtempo Mix 037 - Sinemis

The second installment in a 2-part series, Enveleau Remixes (Side B) is an ambient-oriented EP featuring remixes by four artists greatly respected by Matt Robertson, as well as a remix by him under a new moniker, Sea Thunder. Hand-picked by Matt Robertson, this EP features the incredible experimental artist Hinako Omori, who's had releases on labels such as Houndstooth and Injazero, Oora, whose incredible channel is full of daily analog goodness, producer Firewood Poetry bringing the vocal touch, and lastly, Canadian downtempo producer Sievi, tying it with a bow.

Ripples, the debut EP by Alejandro Bento @axel-toben, is a collection of 3 solo piano pieces and includes a bonus remix by Robot Koch @robot-koch. Creating a full arc of emotional intensity, the landscapes painted by his playing remind us of the places we come from and we are going to, his piano playing portraying the simplicity and innocence of the need to express.

In Alejandro's own words:
"These songs speak of origins and horizons. But most of all, they speak of love, friendship and care, of presence and joy. They speak of following the heartbeat and believing in one's self and in others."

We asked some of the artists we love who we believe are dedicated to pushing the boundaries of electronic music to make their own renditions of the Ripples album by Alejandro Bento. They chose the tune they most resonated with and created very unique pieces honoring the piano yet bringing forth their own distinct sound. They were given full creative freedom in what direction they wanted to take their remix, and what they sent us was very unique and surprising, as expected by these gendre-blurring, boundary-pushing artists. We have collaborations from Memotone, Christopher Willits, Souns, LCC - Las Casicasiotone, Leeward and Axel Toben - this last one being a rendition by Alejandro Bento himself under his electronic music alias. We really like it, hope you do too.

This month's mix comes from Bay Area based @spacegeisha ! 
She is no stranger to the West Coast Bass sound, being the label director of a prolific outlet focusing on that, Street Ritual as well as label DJ for Shanti Planti. Her unique approach to the dancefloor has taken her across the USA, Australia and more, playing bigger stages every year. She turned down a notch her frequent dancefloor oriented output for this mix, and she takes us on a really interesting journey through some of her favorite sounds.

‘Souns - Sun Inside The Sun (The Remixes)’ is a collection of 4 unique reworks of Souns’ original song ‘Sun Inside The Sun’ taken from the Aquamarine album originally released on December 2017. It's forthcoming on Subtempo, and will be out in May 31st. 

Heralding on relationships that have developed over the years, @michaelred handpicked @synkro, @loscil and @phaeleh to remix his ambient material that he composes under the @souns-3 alias. Michael has shared the studio, or the stage with all three of them in multiple occasions, making this collaboration a natural continuation of their work together. 

Loscil sets the tone with the first remix. The ambient music maestro, who is widely recognized as the king of dynamics, continues to redefine the boundaries of the genre with this one. Loscil’s remix allows time for the main idea of his song to develop, with mysterious melodic hints as to what’s to come. In his usual fashion, the use of space and deep pulsating rhythm compound, driving the track into an entirely new landscape, transporting the listener into far away northern lands, where whales live and fog covers the calm oceans.

Souns - Sun Inside The Sun (Loscil Remix)

@Synkro decided to take the tune directly to the heart of the dancefloor. With noticeable influences from drum & bass and autonomic music, he stretched the deep pulse of the original song and gave it a consistent rhythm to stand on, taking the deep wintery tone of the original, into an entirely new territory, the 2am of a London dancefloor perhaps. However fast the song’s tempo seems, the tune maintains a 2-step slower dynamic making it equally listenable at home as well a dancefloor starter. In his usual fashion, Synkro does it again, effortlessly combining the deep chill sounds with dancefloor beats, making this track another masterpiece by the UK born artist.

@phaeleh, much like Synkro, took the tune into a rhythmic sphere, but this time, we are in a full summer afternoon near the beach. Adding a festive tone, he was able to change the entire feel of the song to one of feel-good, positive and bright flavor. One that will surely make the rounds this summer. Dub influenced, slightly reminiscent of a b-side dubplate on a classic 90’s house record at times, the use of delays and his expansive synth melodies make this one a catchy tune perfectly ready for the festival season.
