'Well Worth A Visit' is the debut EP by Hanegi Koen, a creative duo of British filmmaker Sam King and Canadian label head Sean Mallion (ADSR Collective). Mixed by Japanese producer Aoki Takamasa, the EP sums up the duo’s first year as a band.

From the start, the two committed to a simple and spontaneous live approach to writing music, opting for analog synths and drum machines instead of laptops and digital effects. Balancing ambient sound design alongside warm organic techno and ripples of delicate electronics; British-born, Canadian-based, Grammy-nominated composer, producer, and musical director @Matt-Robertson is set to release his new album ‘Enveleau’. It follows his warmly received ‘In Echelon‘ (2016) and ‘Entology’ (2018) albums, described as “symphonic electronica and leftfield techno that’s cinematic in scale” (Mixmag), “evocative, expansive, and original” (Electronic Sound), “magnificent...wild, electronic sound” (The Line Of Best Fit) and “Nils Frahm’s modern classical meets Jon Hopkins’ grainy techno” (MOJO).

“I love how the sonics of some records immediately put the listener in a comfortable space - just from the sound of an opening chord, you can be placed in a space and time. I am trying to achieve something similar to this on ‘Enveleau’, really concentrating on what the sounds make you feel, as a separate thing to what the harmony and the pitch make you feel. I’ve used a lot of different recordings I made outside, including natural textures wrapped into the drum sounds. It gives the record a sense of place.”

“Enveleau is a word I am taking to mean a sense of envelopment in your surroundings, and trying to take some comfort in that. In a sense, gratitude. The name also has a lot to do with water and how it flows along the easiest path. 2020 was a really challenging year for everyone. I think I found a sense of ease by concentrating on my family and getting outside if I could. The cover is a photo of an area near where I live, and it really captures a sense of the stillness that I have been trying to find within the past year.”

Fluctuate - Storms Await Us All (Steve Gibbs Remix)

The first in a 2-part series, Enveleau Remixes (Side A) is an upbeat, dancefloor-oriented EP featuring remixes by three artists greatly respected by Matt Robertson (@mattrobertson). First up, a remix of Bees, by Matt’s close friend and frequent Björk collaborator, the hang drum virtuoso Manu Delago (@manudelago). Following are remixes by Roches Noires (@roches_noires) and Cardio Party (@cardioparty), both artists who Matt connected with online during the pandemic, and both of whom re-invented the tracks Enveleau and Kalimba in truly unique and inspiring ways. All tracks taking the originals from the Enveleau album released earlier this year, to a whole new level.

Hand-picked by Matt Robertson, this EP features the incredible experimental artist Hinako Omori, who's had releases on labels such as Houndstooth and Injazero, Oora, whose incredible channel is full of daily analog goodness, producer Firewood Poetry bringing the vocal touch, and lastly, Canadian downtempo producer Sievi, tying it with a bow.

The first single from “Pulses and Resonances”, Rene Lorenzo’s debut album on Subtempo, set to release on vinyl on February 2nd. 

This album represents a culmination of more than 20 years of electronic music exposure as a DJ and a clear point of view. We can hear influences of broken beat, techno, drum & bass, all through the unique lens that Rene brings to the table, deeply steeped in ambient, deep techno and downtempo. Even though this isn’t a dance record, it’s filled with energy and drive. It is an out-of-the-ordinary album, with intricate shifts and turns with well-crafted kick drums, round bass lines and enveloping subs. A record filled with warm sounds, head-nodding rhythms, and rich textured spaces. It’s all woven into an easy-listening experience, without demanding the listener’s full attention, but creating a landscape that is unique and varied throughout. We can hear references to artists like Boards of Canada, Jan Jenilek, Synkro and the like.

“In this record, every track has a different pulse or rhythm, and I use different resonators in the sound design process to achieve these tones. I started by leaving the space open with the ambient pads and hardly any rhythm, and I’d let myself be carried away by my sense of rhythm slowly building the compositions. I am obsessive with audio processing and I almost never leave a sound in its initial form. I like to add some subtle effect that sounds like something different and give new sounds to the elements I use.”

SBTMP023 – Rene Lorenzo - Pulses & Resonances [Previews]

‘Orbit’ is Axel Toben’s debut album. A natural progression from his previous composer work as Alejandro Bento on his ‘Ripples’ EP (which got remixed by the likes of Robot Koch, Memotone, Christopher Willits, and more) and his 2019 electronica-infused EP titled ‘Phonosynthesis’ written under this new moniker. ‘Orbit’ bridges his electronic and acoustic worlds into one, with the piano as the driving force of the record, this time accompanied by rich voicing, textures, and pads that add to the melodic, rhythmic, emotive, cinematic and hypnotic sound that Axel Toben has become synonymous with. Written entirely during quarantine, ‘Orbit’ serves as Axel Toben’s signpost, during a time of greater unknowns than our generation has ever known, and the destabilizing nature of the current events, his message seems to read, it’s going to be ok, it’s all about the journey, and there is hope.

The first single, Orbit, was originally released for Piano Day 2020, and included in the official playlist by Nils Frahm.

Polaris is the first single from 'Well Worth A Visit', the debut EP by Hanegi Koen, set for a vinyl release on February 2021. 

Polaris was one of the first tracks the band made together - opening with the hum of insects from the post-typhoon sounds of the Hanegi Koen park in Tokyo, where the band draws their name from. The track perfectly sums up the park’s gentle atmosphere. 

The accompanying video was recorded on an old hi-8 camcorder, setting the scene and introducing both the park and the band at the same time. The analog look of the video and old VHS tape aesthetic, are paying homage to the nature of the band’s writing process, as well as the nostalgic yet euphoric style of their music, as both ex-pats write from their home away from home.

Hanegi Koen - Polaris

A veteran electronic pioneer, with previous releases on labels such as Traum, Cocoon, and heralding international acclaim from the likes of Sven Vath, Adam Kroll (@adam-kroll ) returns with ‘Planet Plankton’, an abstract ambient and textural collection, reminiscent of the experimental sound of Pole or Deadbeat at times. Borrowing from his early years of minimal techno productions as well as dub explorations from his time in Kingston, Jamaica, this beatless EP is sure to delight music heads worldwide.

In Adam's words: “Planet Plankton started with a documentary on Arte TV about hydroponic underwater sound recording. Those guys had this special technology to record the sounds that fish make. They speak to each other! These sounds are exactly the same sounds that you can find in nearly every one of my songs."
