Shut in behind shuttered blinds, Katelyn took a drag of her cigarette. She didn’t know why she smoked. Perhaps it was just because the other girls did it. Of course, the other girls were those who had so kindly chased her into this hollow out of fear. She was different, she did their work better, her skin was interrupted by alloyed plates and her body couldn’t feel a single pleasure that wasn’t carnal. With a quick puff, Katelyn cursed herself and her designers, who had so brilliantly forbade her from so much of the world with a few lines of code and subcutaneous circuitry connections. Most food tasted the same, she had no sense of smell, and no drug nor the cigarette she smoked could ever help her escape the life that festered in these neon alleyways as they did for everyone else. No, her cyber pleasures were rooted firmly in a single sense - touch, the medium through which she performed her work.

Katelyn had recently begun to wonder if she’d find pleasure in some of the more perverse applications of that sense. Sexual pleasures had become all but passe to her, but she knew that human brains could easily twist the pathways between joy and terror. She wondered if she’d find pleasure in killing someone. Sometimes, she considered crushing her client’s windpipes. The sinewy synthetic silk that made up her tendons gave her enough strength to do so with only her ring and pinky finger. She imagined the suckering “pop” that might emanate were she to pluck an eyeball from its socket, or the warmth of the blood that might spray forth from an artery severed by the honed edges of her acrylic nails. She was awoken from her daydream by a knock on the door - a client, she supposed. Katelyn took one last long drag of her cigarette and took a single, small delight in the sensation of extinguishing its embered end on the tip of her tongue. Perhaps, she mused as she walked to answer the door, perhaps...

Critical drum & bass imprint Cause4concern know how to make their presence felt . Having ended 2017 on a climatic release from rising stalwart Akov, who proudly stepped up the label’s hold over the scene’s most unrelenting newcomers, they return with another output which solidifies how imperative they’ve come within its very fabric. Slovakian based producer Subtension is the next artist to slide into C4C’s crucial roster, bringing with him a four-track offering which is sure to orchestrate sub-littered damage over the months to come

The Nestbox EP highlights the wide ranging scope of a label like Cause4Concern. Yet again the label retains its snapping reputation, cutting forward with only the hungriest of newcomers. And together with the likes of Subtension, they’ve continued this pattern, proving that time after time they’re just as destructive as they were when they first affirmed themselves as a founding part of neurofunk. Title-track ‘Nestbox’ straight away underline Subtension’s ingenious take on drum & bass production. It’s sci-fi inspired sonics, ticking instrumentals, wooden drum pads and ticking bass stabs draw the track into an undeniable groove, one which oozes with a dancefloor edge whilst shifting from layer to layer. ‘Left Handed’ pulls out the clacking percussive streams which filter through each channel, gradually bringing you across step by step until its breakdown finally leaves you freefalling into a fluctuating bassline. Up next, Dephzac joins Subtension for collaborative track ‘Tomb Diver’, staying true to form with a deeply lined composition and subterranean bass-levels. Each segment pushes you further and further beneath the surface, never allowing you to come up for air. And then comes ‘Polar’, a more intimate finisher which introduces you through a dainty littering of melodies before the track rolls out with more hard-hitting drum rhythms. It’s of a softer hue, adding diversity to the C4C roster and back catalogue, helping to demonstrate how they became such renowned figures.

Alongside groundbreaking releases like the one provided by Subtension, they’ve held their domination since the label first came in to power. This is something they’re sure to uphold, still pushing the bar with every release.

NAIS returns to NEUROPUNK RECORDS with his LET’S ROCK EP, the latest in an explosive series of releases across the neurofunk scene’s top labels including Eatbrain, Bad Taste, and a prior release on NEUROPUNK RECORDS with his EP “Dirty Bounce”. A diverse display of NAIS’ boisterous sonic character, the LET’S ROCK EP sees NAIS continue to build his meteoric momentum with a further four uncompromising tracks.

LET’S ROCK opens with a track by the same name, within which NAIS warps a funk fueled introductory instrumental with an uproarious bassline that allows space for the samples swung snares to step underneath. VISIBLE TRIGGERS takes a similar approach to its bassline synthesis, but instead stretches it amidst a rapid percussive sequence of ringing metallic timbre. The initial dubby atmosphere of JNGL follows next, taking the source material of the genre as the inspiration for a uniquely technical set of sounds. The braggadocious bravado of BOSSIN then closes the EP, perhaps most emblematic of NAIS boisterous sound in it’s hyperenergetic & funky bassline flow.

With LET’S ROCK, NAIS returns to his NEUROPUNK RECORDS launchpad as he seeks to set out on a second sonic journey that sees him rise even further than the explosive success of his first.

The deed was done. The great dragonrider, who had tested the adventurer so, had been vanquished and now lay amongst the ruins of the ancient temple that had once contained his might. For their part the adventurer levitated high above these ruins, surveying now the barren mountain that lay before them. They now possessed the knowledge of the dragon, its rider, and more, having gained everything from the beast’s flight and flaming tongue to the rider’s discipline and control. Their final quest had been accomplished, what more could lay before them?
Yet the adventurer was born under sign of the snake, and thus their passionate resolve bore forth a foremost idea to their mind. With little more than a thought, they began to hew the mountainside into a new and wondrous temple, replacing the ambitious construction of the dragon temple that now lay below. As they sculpted their new temple with mere thoughts, the adventurer’s breath transformed stone into gilt and precious stones of all variety, furnishing the temple’s strong stone halls with all the beauties of the world. With a wave of the adventurer’s hand rain fell from the sky, and with it came trees that sprouted from stone and serpentine vines that crawled across the temple’s facade. The temple now built, the adventurer set to one final task. Chanting a mantra known innately as one of the snake, the adventurer summoned forth first one great serpent, then more and more, further and further until sending the writhing mass into the depths of the temple, to spread and find their homes amongst its nooks and crannies and to lay in wait for the students that would come. As the greatest snake of all wrapped the entire mountain in its scaly embrace, the adventurer looked upon their completed work with satisfaction. This was no mere temple built to honor the haughty dragon. No, this would be where the adventurer would take and train their disciples. This was a place of the Snake, where their ilk could train and learn. This strength, this power, under the adventurer’s rule it would be taught. Here, upon the face of the mountain, the SNAKE MONASTERY was born.
GYDRA present their first full album, SNAKE MONASTERY, to EATBRAIN for the label’s latest release. The culmination of their journey through the trials of their own sonic temple, SNAKE MONASTERY delivers a mammoth fifteen tracks to the EATBRAIN horde, representing an initiation in sound for those not yet devoted to the duo’s monstrous and serpentine form.
