Liam Lakeway Ralph is one of those joyously unclassifiable artists. One minute he’s slapping us with slithering, snake-like D&B on labels like Unchained, the next he’s tearing apart our souls with heavily emotional grime-inspired beats on Sweet Box, the next he’s shredding up the breaks with junglist switches on Cocobolo. And that’s just this year alone.

Liam Lakeway Ralph is also one of those one of those scarily lucky cats… One minute he was left floundering from a pretty brutal label closure (Med School RIP), the next was faced with complete rave shutdown (Covid RIP), the next he was suffering bleeding on the brain and seizures with doctors throwing around scary words like tumor!

For a while it was one of the most terrifying situations you can imagine. Fortunately he’s fully recovered, back in good health and more inspired than he’s been in many years. Everything you hear on this mix is the sound of a man who isn’t just back on his A-game, but on another entire cosmos of inspiration and appreciation.

Getting to know Outline Audio: Run by Leeds-based artist R.U.M, the label launched in December 2022 but was in the incubation, planning and curation stages for a good year before he pressed the button and presented it to the world.

Rather than hurtle out heaps of releases instantly, Outline Audio has only dropped two EPs so far. Operating on a less-is-more, quality-over-quantity mindset, R.U.M's vision is to celebrate each release and put as much as value into the music as possible. 

With a view to strictly putting out tracks that stand the test of time and don’t flex on bandwagon hype or trends, in his own words R.U.M explains how each release belongs to the artist and the label is merely a vehicle to bring the music into the world.

So far the vehicle is purring with sleek efficiency. The first release dropped December last year. A VA EP featuring Objectiv, Nooch, Resslek and R.U.M himself, it mapped out the parameters of the label’s deep, dark, minimal methods in style. Giving the EP space to breathe, last week saw Outline update the discog with their second release, this time focusing on one artist: Illament's Cold Guys EP.

Adding weight and momentum as the label slowly but surely puts down firm roots for the long game, Illament's release is another exceptional release... And plenty more is in store in the future.
