The origin of the word hakawati حكواتي lies in the arabic terms hekaye حكاية (story) and haki حكي (talk). The hakawati was the one who told stories in times before radio and newspapers existed. In ancient times a hakawati came to a coffeehouse to tell his tales about love, hate, tragedy and hope. Every night he stopped at the most exciting part, so that his audience came back the next day until the day he finished and moved on to the next city. The culture of storytelling survived the changes of past centuries and until today people come together curious to know how the story continues.
