This is a recording I made together with New Delhi-based bansuri player Kiran. I play sansula and djembe. 

This piece was used in the performance of Rah, by the Dhwani Repertory, choreographed by Vaswati Misra. Parvathy Baul sang live, together with dancers from the Dhwani Repertory, while I did the live music and the sound-on-stage.

This is music for a scene in the puppet theatre performance of Pinocchio, by the Kuch Kuch Puppet Theatre Co, New Delhi. 

I've composed and recorded the music using a mix of live percussion and synth bass and a sampled kick. Enjoy!

In the early part of the millennium, 5 outstanding musicians from 5 different countries happened to be in New Delhi all at the same time-Lionel Dentan (saaz,rebab, sitar) was living in India, Osvaldo Jorge (percussion) was learning tabla, Gennady Lavrentyev (violin, guitar) was on a scholarship and Sandro Mariotti (saxophone) was visiting. Together with Suchet Malhotra, this quintet began playing and performing melodies from the near east, the middle east and the mediterranean, interpreting them in their own way, while retaining their flavour & essence. 

The result was a project that for almost two decades continues to be the de facto standard for an instrumental band-no vocals and no electronics, and yet, the music is appealing, timeless...

From their first gig on Dec 22, 2001, to the release of this album in 2004, three years later, Mystique blazed a trail of musicianship and virtuosity.

Abhimanyu is the son of Arjuna. 

The Kauravas design a Chakravyuha to trap Arjuna, but as he is on the other side of the battlefield, Abhimanyu enters the Chakravyuha. 

Although he fights valiantly, he meets his death. 

This is the music for the scene.

In 2007, legendary Dhol players from Pakistan came to India for a visit and were recorded by Suchet Malhotra. This is the first track from the first album.

Made for the puppet theatre production Mahabharata, this music plays when Yudhishthira loses all in the Game of Dice to Shakuni. His third and final gamble is the wife of all the Pandavas and their Queen-Draupadi.

In the presence of the full assembly, Duryodhana, the Kaurava King, asks his brother Dusshasan to disrobe Draupadi. 

All the elders stand by watching, silent, aghast but mute, as this scene unfolds. When her pleas are unheeded by the august assembly, Draupadi prays to, and is saved by, Lord Krishna.

Lord Krishna is the mover of the Mahabharata, and reveals the Bhagavad Gita to the warrior prince Arjuna on the battlefield on the eve of battle. 

In this puppet theatre production of the epic, the Lord appears mysteriously; He is never shown but appears through His chosen sound, the conch shell. 

This music forms the finalé of the 1 hour 10 min performance, when all the performers appear on stage and move with the masks, symbolising the hand of Lord Krishna in all activity. 

They also take their bows while the music plays, and the lights and music fade out in the end to mark the end of the performance.

Radio Spot: Coffee Santhe

A single note can have immense expressive power, and here I have explored that feeling using the Sansula from Hokema. There is one relentless note, and many other layers of notes over that, patterns that appear and fade, insistence, all to show the state of mind of the one who is seeking, searching.
