Migrants matter. Many will agree with this statement, yet do not believe they exacerbate migrants' suffering. However, as the “food we eat is necessary” and our demand for it to be “cheap” results in migrant farm workers (MFW) facing inequitable labor environments, “we are responsible for their treatment” due to structures of consumerism, agriculture, citizenship, and mobility (Leibel, 2007,  p.14). This is why we titled our podcast Migrants Matter, with the current episode called Active Citizenship. This episode features thought-provoking conversation that seeks to redefine migrant farm workers as Active Citizens through careful examination of their vitality, suffering and lived experiences.

What is active citizenship? We explore this concept through the lens of Tom Western and the way he examines it in the context of refugee communities in Athens. What does everyday act of belonging means in this context?  Additionally, we discuss what active citizenship looks like in the current political climate of Canada, and in our communities.

Episode Title: Deconstructing Tourism: Hawai'i, Imperialism, and Militarization in the Tourist

Have you ever wondered how the places you book for your holidays became such an ideal tourist destination? Or what tourism really even means? Well, tourism in Hawai'i is more than just a tropical getaway. It's an industry deeply intertwined with colonialism, militarization, and economic exploitation. "Deconstructing Tourism" takes us through a journey framed by history, society, and culture, to understand how tourism functions today and what kind of impact those structures have on our actions and agency. In this episode, we dive into Detours: A Decolonial Guide to Hawai’i, a powerful collection of essays edited by Hōkūlani Aikau and Vernadette Vicuña Gonzalez, which challenges the dominant narratives of tourism and offers an Indigenous perspective on land, sovereignty, and resistance.
