Sugar Sukyuel, vocalist of 'Kingston Rudieska,' has been striving to show another side of himself from what he brought to us as front man of Korea's flag-ship ska band this last decade. He is a fanatic of reggae music and tried to figure out how to bring reggae music to the masses as the genre isn't familiar with people in Korea. In the fall of 2013, he made a new band named 'Sugar Come Again.' Its music follows the basic genre of reggae, but then also pursues 'Emotional Reggae' with heartfelt lyrics and melody that Koreans adore. It is the band's goal to make people accept reggae music much more easily than before.

한국 최고의 스카밴드 '킹스턴 루디스카'의 보컬 슈가석율은 지난 10년간 스카밴드의 프론트맨으로서 보여줬던 모습과는 다른 모습을 보여주기 위해 노력했다. 그 스스로도 레게 음악의 굉장한 매니아인데, 한국에서는 아직 잘 알려지지 않은 레게음악을 쉽게 들려줄 방법에 대해 깊게 고민하던 그는 2013년 가을, '슈가콤아겐'이라는 새로운 밴드를 만들게 된다. 슈가콤아겐의 음악은 레게 장르의 기본에서 벗어나지 않되, 한국인들이 좋아하는 '감성적인' 멜로디와 가사를 붙힌 '감성레게'를 추구한다. 그렇게 조금 더 사람들이 쉽게 레게 음악을 받아들일 수 있게 하는것이 슈가콤아겐이 계속 음악을 하는 목표다.

Ska -Jazz from South Korea

The one and only domestic ska-jazz band, Ska 4 Ensemble released its first full album, Ska 4 Ensemble, in July 2013. The band includes trumpeter Sun-yong Bae, who recently released a solo album, Bugler's Holiday, and pianist Seok-cheol Yoon, who has been making his presence known not only in jazz but other genres of music. The lead session of the band is made up of three musicians who insist on authentic ska music: Guitarist Jae-ha Seo, bassist Hyong-sik Son, and drummer Dae-min Kim. 

While the team has a musical background deeply-rooted in ska, its sound is not limited to that genre. The band brings out both ska's energy and jazz's freedom. While staying true to ska elements, Ska 4 Ensemble's music goes a step further by bringing together the ensemble jazz improvisation on ska's downbeat. 


2014년 7월 첫 정규앨범 <Ska 4 Ensemble>을 발매한 스카포 앙상블(Ska 4 Ensemble)은 2012년 솔로앨범 <Bugler's Holiday>를 발표하고 재즈계 주목받는 트럼펫터로 성장한 배선용, 재즈 뿐 아니라 다양한 음악에서 독보적인 캐리어를 쌓아오고 있는 피아니스트 윤석철, 그리고 정통 스카 음악만을 고집하는 뮤지션 서재하(기타), 손형식(베이스), 김대민(드럼)이 리드 섹션으로 의기투합해 만들어진 국내 유일의 스카 재즈 밴드이다. 전통 스카를 바탕으로 하지만 거기에 머물지 않고 스카의 흥겨움과 재즈의 자유로움을 경쾌하고 여유롭게 표출한다. 또, 다운 비트를 강조하는 스카 비트 위에 펼쳐지는 강렬한 즉흥 연주와 재즈 앙상블이 결합되어, 스카 본연의 색에 충실하면서도 한층 발전된 형태의 새로운 음악을 추구하는 것이 특징이다. 작품성과 대중성을 동시에 갖추며 국내 연주씬에서 주목받고 있는 스카포 앙상블, 2014년 이들의 활동을 주목해보자.
