Emilie Weibel is a composer-performer and vocalist. Her work is rooted in female vocality, communal and intimate improvisation, field recording and sound production. Her compositional work involves recording and collaging found objects, raw vocals, room tones, environmental sounds and synthesis, to produce new architectures within a feminist and non-hierarchical narrative. For the Vivian Maier exhibit sound-walk, Emilie used recycled and new sound material recorded in New York City between the start of the pandemic and the summer of 2021.



The objects she chose as sound sources in the featured compositions are often modest and unnoticed: a breath, children eating chips, a plant, footsteps, the sound of unknown neighbors, the corner of a hallway, the soundscape of a street from her bathroom, or a cricket. These sounds represent her relationship and attachment to the people she encounters and to the environment she inhabits as a female artist. Her work after recording and improvising is to compose these memories into a landscape of her own fantasy and perspectives. Emilie uses her recording and production skills as well as synthesis techniques to create auditory illusions as hybrids of two possible worlds: a place where things can be recorded, and another that only exists in one’s own fantasy. In parallel to Vivian Maier’s photographic work, her idea is to bring the listener to a place of suspension, where everything breathes, lives and expresses itself; the room, the humans, the animals, insects, machines and social concepts, whether desired or not, consciously remembered or not, uttered or not, accepted or not.



The embryo of the featured compositions often began with the recording of vocal improvisations and performative movements with found objects. These vocal rituals and streams of sounds are recorded with multiple microphones and orientations in her apartment, neighborhood or work place. They establish the emotional geography of her pieces and capture a wide range of sounds at different scales and recorded from different perspectives.
