Sleepless

A special White Night version of Dekopon Dance used in 360 degree projections by French duo Antoine et Manuel that took over the Dome Room of the State Library, Victoria for White Night Melbourne 2015. 

Alex Akers of FORCES gently edits Dekopon Dance with Sui Zhen for the special performance, which also featured Cayn Borthwick (NO ZU) on saxophone.

‘Body Reset’ sees Sui Zhen develop the music found in the Female Basic EP and move on to a new, retro-futuristic sound. This time influenced as much by late nights in Koenji, Tokyo as at an onsen/sauna in the mountains of Nagano, here Sui Zhen explores the resetting of both body and mind with 25 minutes of swelling synths, 808 beats and dreamy vocals.

Perfect Place (Original Version)

The next single from my forthcoming album Losing, Linda out Friday 27 September via Dot Dash and Cascine. 

Captured in the city of Matsudo, Japan in a repurposed Love Hotel, Zhen explains the creation of new single "Matsudo City Life", "the walls of the Love Hotel - titled 'Paradise Air' - were made of very thick concrete to keep loud noise in, which worked well for us musicians. Each room was uniquely themed. We were assigned one with faded pink and red tones, a love heart shaped bathtub and maroon carpet. Whilst the room we designated as 'the studio' was tiled with cool grey tones, marble and pillared. The city was what locals call a 'sleeper town' or bedroom community, which Salarymen would use only for rest. In some ways it was a city full of their dreams and empty of their reality."

Throughout her discography and performances, experimental pop and performance artist Sui Zhen has zoomed in on the intersections between human life and technology — how to exist in the digital age, as well as the ways in which we risk losing true sight of ourselves in the process. From the banal pastel dystopia of the Secretly Susan era music videos to the invention of Linda, a ghostly apparition who manifests in her latest LP, Losing, Linda – her cinematic, surreal and staged landscapes allow her unique take on pop music to sit within its own uncanny terrain.
