We’re looking forward to sharing with you a series of conversations we’ll be having with female identifying creatives working in the fields of music and the arts in the form of a monthly podcast. These discussions will centre on their work and experience with their industry. During these strange and uncertain times it’s the best way we can think of to feel a little more connected to each other.

Critical Music is proud to present ‘Countdown’, the fourth solo album from one of drum & bass music’s true doyens, Enei.

A master of every style and strain of the D&B template - from energetic jump-up and silky smooth liquid, to skull-smashing darkness - Enei’s vast talent and hard-grafted skills have placed the Russian-born producer among the genre’s greatest exponents.

Countdown’ sees Enei bringing vocalists onto seven of the album’s 11 tracks, adding a warmer and more human touch, a natural progression as he becomes ever more rooted in the UK’s multicultural D&B community, while still being the same artist behind some of the hardest and most punishing drum & bass in recent years.  

Opener ‘Runaway With You’ sets the tone, presenting a moody liquid roller gilded with deft technical touches and the rich vocals of Cameron Hayes, before the lively, jazzy bounce of ‘Message’ featuring Sparkz lifts the energy in preparation for lead single ‘Black Bear’ to unleash its croaking, Belgian style jump-up pressure.

The vocals don’t stop coming; legendary London MC Killa P takes to the high-pressure ‘Nobody Else’, Bristol’s Eva Lazarus brings her soulful reggae inflections to ‘Set It Off’ and regular Critical contributor Verbz offers up his laidback bars across ‘Answers’.

The fantastically weird ‘Cartier’ punctuates proceedings with a pure instrumental work out that demonstrates Enei’s outrageous sound design skills, before the delicately drifting ‘Be The One’ brings more vocals from KLO in a link-up with Critical label boss and regular collaborator, Kasra.

‘Checks Up’ alongside Limmz reduces the tempo for the album’s sole non-D&B excursion, delivering a shaking breakbeat backbone for the young MC’s grime tinted bars. All that remains is for closing track ‘Axis’ to take things back to the raw fundamentals with a bubbling, percussive roller that leaves you hungry for even more.

Almost twenty years on since his debut release, and almost fifteen since exclusively signing for Critical Music, ‘Countdown’ is a bold proclamation that Enei’s enthusiasm for his art, and the art form itself, storms forward unabated.

It’s an absolute pleasure to have her create this sonic journey for us, which seamlessly weaves a variety of aural textures ranging from poppy and euphoric to dark and ravey. With such masterful curation, it’s no surprise that Tanya has featured on Rinse FM and Threads radio and is associated with notorious leftfield label Lobster Theremin. 

Having recently returned from London, Tanya is based in Naarm, where she has just launched a new program on Triple R called After Hours Mutuation. Catch the program every Thursday morning from 4am-6am.

melt mix vol. 6 - T-N

Butter Sessions tees up a flawless duo, Naarm (Melbourne) based artists Mousse(Simon Barry) and Trevor(James Vinciguerra) for a split 7" release with a screen-printed sleeve. Both artists add the release to their highly-regarded archives. On the A-Side, Mousse submits Northstar. This is his second contribution to Butter Sessions; a robust follow up to his funky explorations showcased on the Bungalow Classics12". On the flipside, Trevor follows up his 2019Becoming a Bed LP(Alter)with the astute Darron.


As one can expect, Mousse's Northstar is soaked in infectious house sequencing and sci-fi hypnobeat, while laced with dialogue extracted from the 1986 anime film Fist of the Northstar. The B-Side track Darron sees visual artist Trevor jumping from his contribution to the record sleeve into the record itself. The piece emits glitchy electro bound in coarse breaks but with just the right amount of room to breathe. As two punchy aligned compositions, this split release introduces a powerful pairing.

Mousse - Northstar (Preview)

The environment around them was ever changing, for as much as it was bright and light there were also moments of bleak, bitter darkness. They lurked around the corner. The planet was as much a living organism as they were, a bubbling ball of fertile unrest and unpredictable consequences. As the clouds rolled by slowly overhead he listened to their rumbling - it was ominous and yet weighted with such promise. A living dub, a noise and a drone in the distant skies above. 

Max In The World is a New York based producer and label boss. He runs Bliss Point - a promising imprint with a penchant for deep, ethereal electronics, dub and beyond. Max himself is set to release a new EP at the start of this year. It features an all guns blazing remix from Lyon dj and producer Sentiments.
