US屈指の酩酊する男Sun Araw。
8枚目のアルバムでひらいた新境地は、サイケデリックとエレクトロニックの脱力ロデオ!

サイケデリックロックとダブの過剰な沼をつくっていた初期の作品から、2012年の『The Inner Treaty』ではジャケットよろしく口がぽっかりと空いた抜けの妙を生み、2014年の『Belomancie』ではその空いた部分がエレクトロニックの貼り絵でいっそう際立ち、Sun RaともLee Perryともほかの誰とも真似できない浮きの中毒を生むSun Araw。

2016年はライブ盤をはじめ、Prins Thomasによる話題盤『Principe Del Norte』に参加し、同友のAlex Gray (= D/P/I) とともにニューエイジの生ける伝説Laraajiとの競演盤をリリースするなど、あいかわらず絶好調の活躍をみせていた。そして待望のソロ・アルバムとしては本作が3年ぶり! ここでは揺れて震えるダブの側の側だけが存在し、電子音は弾力と自由さをもってしつこいほど駆け回り、トレードマークのギターは年月の味を増してブルースのようで、サイケデリックにポップに、しかし拒絶とは正反対に耳へ馴染んでしまうという次のレベルに到達。

いままで古代ローマやギリシャを作品に盛り込んできたSun Arawの本作のテーマは「牛を追いかけ回すカウボーイ」。ギリシア神話の英雄であるヘラクレスが牛やイノシシの怪物を捕らえ、やっつけていたことからヘラクレス = カウボーイとなったそう。

1曲目"A Golden Book"のショッキングな重力変化と後半で谺する尺八の無表情っぷりにはじまり、時間をかけて無理矢理にでも笑顔にさせてしまう陽気な"A Chute"、煙がこもった雑踏のなかでVisible CloaksやLaraajiのアンビエントが生まれる"Campfires"、ジュークとアフリカンの台頭から崩壊したビート観を思わす (つまり食品まつりと同じ線にいる) "40 Hooves"、パーカッションのしつこさがとてつもなく心地よいBob Dylan - I Shall Be Releasedのカバーなどなど、目がくらむような感覚のなかで、歌って弾いての見事なグッドミュージックを成立させた。絶妙なバランスをもって大衆音楽の域に達するほど、この男の憎めないスター性が発揮された傑作である。これは聴ける。これはドープ。

【 Sun Araw 】
ロサンゼルスが拠点の音楽家、Cameron Stallonesによるプロジェクト。
2008年にNot Not Funより最初のアルバム『The Phynx』を発表。同レーベルや自身のSun Arkを中心に作品を発表し、USインディーロックの登竜門Woodsistや、カセットテープ再熱の下地をつくった名レーベルStunnedほかからリリースがあり、国内盤化も多く行われている。
また、Matthewdavidとのライブを記録したカセット『Livephreaxxx!!!!』(2010年, Leaving Records。ドローンとサイケデリックで盛り上がる当時を象徴する屈指の名作。) や、M. Geddes Gengras + The Congosとの大酩酊ダブ盤『Icon Give Thank』(2012年, RVNG) 、ニューエイジ伝説Laraaji + D/P/I/ことAlex Grayとのトリオ編成で行った『Professional Sunflow』(2016, W.25th) など、コラボレーション作品の良さもこの音楽家の特徴である。
現在は精力的にライブを行う一方 (その記録は自身のBandcamp上に多数掲載されている)、Sun ArkではLAをはじめとするアーティストたちのリリースを怠らない。USアンダーグラウンドに欠かせない存在である。

Sun Araw - The Saddle Of The Increate (Japanese Edition)(Sampler)

MIRROR MIRROR, the New York based duo of David Riley and Ryan Lucero, bring their avant-pop explorations to RVNG Intl. with the release of Interiors, the ten-song follow up to their debut album, The Society for the Advancement of Inflammatory Consciousness.

Recorded in two parts, Interiors features the production work of Chris Coady (Beach House, Gang Gang Dance, Zola Jesus), who helped realize an expansive sound from Mirror Mirror's home-studio recordings. The other album half, aided by Joshua da Costa's monstrous and metronomic live drumming, was produced by Thomas Asenault and Zeljko McMullen at So Many Fields (Brooklyn, NY).

Interiors deals in themes of secret societies, escapist fantasies, and psychological extremes. "Sublime Objective" opens the album in the mind's eye of an adventurer attempting a daring mountain climb. "Under the Sun" rollicks under ray-baked guitars until it's split in two by a cameo from SSION front man Cody Critcheloe. "Dot Dot Dot" mutates an R&B midi-bass line, before "Sick City" tours an underworld of nightwalkers and plastic shamans. The acid-inflected “Starseed” adapts a futurist Timothy Leary lecture, promising listeners “bread and dope for a thousand years.” Album namesake “Interiors” describes a recluse who shuts out worldly distractions, while the stringed cavalcade of "Open Wide" leads to new psychedelic pop pastures. The album closes with "Overpower / Overjoy," an industrially flourished, whip-cracking serenade of sorts.

I think a big part of music for me, is referencing youth and nostalgia, and Drifting Away plays on that idea of getting lost in your own world and doing your own thing. The mindset when we’re young is that we can take chances all the time, and as we get older sometimes this idea fades. I hate that feeling, but i think we’re all guilty of it. After doing something for awhile, sometimes we need to stop for a moment and think about why we started doing it in the first place. This song is about wanting to get back to that mindset, to push outside your comfort zone, surrender yourself to the unknown. Embrace what makes you original and challenge yourself, it’s the only way to get better. Drift into your own world and embrace it.

"THE SADDLE OF THE INCREATE” is a romantic comedy of self about the roping and directing of cattle, sung and spoken by many of the characters involved in the roping and directing of some specific cattle (the Cattle of Geryon for what that’s worth).

This is the first released track, which is 40 HOOVES which is more about the unexpected pleasures found in the difficulties of the directing part, after the roping part.  Right before this part was the roping part, where a character called BLUE GENE says this about the herd:

Lorenzo Masotto’s journey with music began at the age of nine when he started playing piano. Graduating from Conservatorio di Verona, he consequently started studying composition and jazz. Lorenzo also plays in a prog/post rock band called Le Maschere di Clara, directs a male voice choir, writes music for film and theatre, and teaches piano and composition. “I’ve never only thought about writing in just one music style,” he says, “I love all music, and everything I write increases my confidence and ability to write from a wider perspective.” He has published two albums, “Silk” in 2015 (Alfa music) and “Rule and Case” in the 2016 (Preserved Sound).
