Mandala Flow with L.E.O

The roots of my 20+ year journey in ecstatic music and dance connect most deeply in Africa. It was Alvin Ailey that first opened that portal for me. I then trained with an African Drum Troupe from Mali and began playing percussion for modern & contemporary dance classes. 

I translated many years experience of playing drum kit in an improvisational jazz ensemble onto my hand drum excursions exploring mind altering poly-rhythms steeped in shamanism. 

As we speak, there is something novel stirring in Africa at this very moment - A fusion of modern music, ancient rhythms and vocal chants that take the dancefloor to new revelations of insight & expression. 

Africa has always been dancing since time immemorial, to connect with the Higher Power and that energy can be felt in their music. 
Call it amapiano, afrobeat, new age kwaito, juju, gnawa, highlife or Afro-house… 

With 1.3 billion people of all shades, an estimated 2,000 dialects tucked from north to south into 54 countries, Africa’s envied musical offerings are wide-reaching. And there are deep cultural contexts to each evolving genre.

It’s no wonder why most of my dj sets are heavily fertile with African roots. To me, throughout the course of time, this diverse musical lineage has always understood and laid out the template for the POWER of deep ceremony and celebration. 

This Sunday I return to bring my music medicine to Kalani, the place that helped clarify my greatest inspiration - Freeform Dance. 

As always what happens is a co-creation between the dancers, sacred space holders, music facilitators, the ancestors and the elements.

This is a song from my first album, Fancy Free.  I composed this song back in California, as my sweet cherubim were taking a nap and I leaned against an old oak tree in meditation. I was beckoned from my meditation to press record on my phone...and this flew through.  It was inspired by my near death experience and visit to the Celestial realm, where I was surrounded by multitudes of Light beings and filled with more LIGHT and LOVE than I ever had imagined possible.  We're never alone.  I've got faith!

Ecstatic dance set from our Loveolution Cacao Ceremony at Akasha/New Earth in Bali. The ceremony was in connection with the 1 Million Meditators global event on December 1st where people all over the world were meditating for peace with the intention to spread a ring of love and coherence around the planet.  We open our ceremonies with a medicine wheel ritual, prayer, songs, ecstatic dance and then a singing circle with a full family band.  The energy on this night was electric! Hearts were blasted wide open and we remembered the joy of being fully alive!

This is my version of this beautiful and profound Hawaiian Mantra sung live at our Loveolution Cacao Ceremony at Akasha in Bali December 2018.

Supported by my dad Johnny and Walker on drums, Richie on lead guitar, my beloved Dustin on charango, Eliana and the whole ceremony on vocals. 

Below is my suggestion on how to restore balance and harmony with the people in our lives:

Ho' o Pono Pono Ritual

We can use this beautiful Hawaiian ritual to bring everything back into right relationship or a place of integrity with all of our relations.

It can be done by calling a person in your life into your awareness, sending them loving energy and going through the process below.

It is far more powerful and effective to have a conversation, ideally in person, alternatively on the phone with someone close to your heart.

Start with the people you may have the most to clear with - your parents, siblings, partner, ex-partners, children and move onto friends. 

The translation of the Hawaiian Mantra is:

I'm so sorry, please forgive me, I love you and thank you, Ho' o Pono Pono, Ho' o Pono Pono.

Begin with an apology for a few specific things you feel you could have done with more love, care and integrity. 

Acknowledge how it may have made them feel with full empathy and compassion. 

Give them space to express.

Listen with your full heart.

Notice if the desire to defend yourself arises and continue to breathe into your heart.

Express how much they mean to you, how much you love them and how grateful you are for their presence in your life. 

Acknowledge a few specific things about them personally or how they have shown up and thank them.

Close with a hug and feel how gratitude and forgiveness have opened your hearts and created a deeper sense of intimacy.
