BLANCAh says:

"Well, I'd like to kick off by talking about this mix, a little bit. I loved this invitation and this freedom to show my references without the commitment of thinking about dance floors. Electronic music for me has always been something way beyond the dance floors. I entered this universe through Trip Hop and Ambient. In this sense, the sentimental aspect always attracted me much more than simply the excitement and frenzy of beats made for the dance floors.

Overt the time, I understood that in our environment there are two types of professionals: Those who stand only as DJs, whose goal is simply to bring fun to people... and the Artists, those who create a speech and aim to pass a message through music, and often, do not feel obliged to please. I identify myself a lot more with the second ones, the artists. I began this mix with the excerpt from an interview by the artist Marina Abramović, where she advises young artists. I think her speech is fantastic and I think it expresses much of what I believe as an artist. I wanted to get this message in my mix. In this one hour I chose songs that touch me deeply in the soul and that influenced me in the construction of my musical identity. It is a very introspective and intimate hour.“

3 QUESTIONS to BLANCAh:

Q) What´s the secret about the small "h" in your name BLANCAh?

A) Haha good question. When I started the process of creating my new musical and visual identity, I looked for a name that represented all of this. I had been painting my hair a few years and decided to discolor it completely. Then I became BLANCAh („white“ in spanish). So far so good. So I decided to do some basic research to find out if there was anyone with this name on our circuit yet, and I met other people with that name. Letter 'H' came to set me apart from these other people, so I decided to keep it in lower case, just to lessen it´s importance in the name, hahaha. But in the end it became one of the most interesting letters in my name and the way I play with the spelling between upper and lower case gave an extra weight.

Q) Tell us about the music scene in Brazil as you´re resident in the famous club D-Edge. What´s the difference to the music scene in Europe?

A) Well, there are many similarities and obviously, big differences between these two scenes. Musically speaking we are very close to each other. The scene in Brazil is rich, full of very interesting and competent artists. Brazilian public is very passionate and affectionate. The energy of a full dancefloor in Brazil has the power of an atomic bomb, in a good way. Here the audience is very loyal to a club and it´s favorite artists. During my trips I realized that both, in Europe and in Brazil, there is the struggle of small nuclei who struggle to create the scene in their cities, people who do it out of sheer passion, who fight for money and give blood to see it happen. These nuclei are essential for artists like us since they enrich and educate an audience in cowtrysides of where only the radio presents the "news", which in general are commercial shit. I feel that a more pronounced difference between Europe and Brazil is that here we still do not really know the real meaning of Underground. This is a difficult subject to address in a few lines but deserves debate.

Q) Which BLANCAh releases are coming soon?

A) I am now working on two Steyoyoke projects. One is called „Authentic“ where I present an original song and I still select 9 songs from the label to compose a compilation.

I'm working on a remix for our „Coupple Affair“ project.

I'm also working on my next EP.

And also traveling a lot to play and take my art further in this world.

3 QUESTIONS to SAILOR & I:

Q: Give us an insight of your classics selection please. 

A: It was very difficult to decide what songs to pick for the this mix. I still feel there was so many songs that weren't able to be featured as the mix would be a week long, or so. What I did was basically to think of songs I wanted to hear that I didn't have on my laptop or that I haven't heard in a long time. So I went online and bought the first 20 songs I could think of that I loved. I thought about the mix as a story, how to start the story and then how it would end, then the selection made sense to me and I knew how to put the tracks together. 

Q: Singer, songwriter, producer live-act – what would describe you and your music best and how did you met the Bass?

A: Musician. I grew up in a family where no one listened to music. But once, I heard an orchestra performing on television I instantly new that this is what I’m going to do for the rest of my life. I was lucky to have parents that supported my passion, even though they weren’t able to share that passion with me, I could see that they understood the impact music had on me and the were fascinated with what music did to me . When I was about 11-12  years old I already hade a huge drum kit, bass guitar, electric guitar and different amplifiers in my boy room. These gears became an important place for me and my friends to discover and develop our passion for music. We played everything from Punk to Heavy Metal, Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Rage Against The Machine, you name it. This is what we did for a few years. Later on I started to play jazz and Afro-American music. Let’s say you want to learn the basics of Be-bop, then there is a lot of hours in front of you in terms of practicing scales, studying music theory, etcetera. Just to be able to be even close to practice this kind of music with other musicians. So I decided to spend the next 4-5 years dedicating my time playing Jazz standards, fusion and experimental music. Once I was out of College I was so fed up with all of this. In a school environment, where everyone is competing to be the better, faster, strongest musician playing a certain instrument, then it’s very easy to lose perspective on what you’re actually doing and why. Many of my friends ended up losing their passion for music and stopped playing. For me, I just lost the love for playing Jazz music. I still love the style, but I felt it was too infected and too much pressure to be a good guitarist, too many hours practicing scales, too few hours having fun playing with other musicians. Q: Which future projects are on the way?

A: I have been working on two different albums last year, the follow up to my debut album “The Invention of Loneliness” and one neo-classical album for guitar and Chello, that I’m going to record in Hansa Studio in Berlin next month. Besides the production work for my albums I have a few collaborations in the making. I can’t tell so much about it at the moment but it will be official the coming weeks.

New York’s indie disco freaks Phenomenal Handclap Band are back with a second single on Toy Tonics: "Jail". With remixes by Detroit’s Waajeed and Marcel Vogel of Lumberjacks in Hell. Including a club edit by Toy Tonics head honcho Kapote.

The band was responsible for one of Toy Tonics' biggest tracks in 2018: "Judge Not". The Ray Mang versions became a hit on open minded dancefloors around the globe. With support from DJs like DJ Harvey, Cassius and Gilles Peterson (who put it in his „best tracks of the year“ list) but also more house DJs like Berlin’s Keinemusik Crew, Soundstream or Superpitcher.

The band members are kind of heroes to many connoisseurs of the funk/ disco scene. The band leader Daniel Collas was playing keys in Amy Winehouse' legendary backing band. Other members are connected to Mark Ronson’s crew or San Francisco's Stones Throw universe.. just to give you the bigger picture. With Phenomenal Handclap Band they blend the unique vibe of 1970ies Power-Soul in the tradition of Charles Stepney and Rotary Connection with today’s new disco vibe. Parcels, Toro Y Moi, Roosevelt are not that far.

Important fact: All played live, no samples. Mixed by the champs at DFA. The band is part of Toy Tonics’ masterplan to expand their dancevibes into more live played scenarios.. stepping out of the strict DJ context. 

Fun fact: Paul McCartney wrote the band a letter saying how much he loved their music when he first heard the band on BBC Radio 1.
