I was rocked by his death yesterday, and spent the afternoon covering my favorite song of his, "Preaching the End of the World."

DJ Kim Lightfoot has been a music collector and turntable artist for most of his life, yet he somehow remains one of Brooklyn's best-kept secrets. With a cult following that reaches as far as the Land of the Rising Sun but that was born in the streets of Brooklyn, a party with him on the ones-and-twos is always a night or day to remember. The best thing about this humble music maestro is that he's an old-school vet who's never lost touch with his soul.

He was raised in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn NY in the 1970’s, Kim’s living room and the streets were his soundtrack. He remembers the music that his mother, older brothers, and aunts used to play. Motown to Funk, Jazz to reggae, Rock to Gospel, James Brown to Johnny Mathis. Kim loved it all. As a young teenager he served as MC to
his twin brother Corey's deejaying. Once they started making mixtapes and doing house parties and community center gigs they were neighborhood legends. Then Kim started watching and learning from Corey and developed his skills deejaying. Corey’s enlistment in the Air Force and Kim departure for college where he hooked up with a crew
on campus (The Master Jammers) spinning break beats and dance music was the impetus for his solo career as professional DJ. Leaving school after the 1st year he found himself back in Brooklyn and he immersed himself into spinning and collecting music..

After learning of the death of phenomenal UK producer and DJ Phil Asher (aka Phlash, aka Restless Soul) we dug through our archives to find this mix, sent to us probably on a CDR back in 2008. We published it along with our first feature interview with Phil Asher in September 2008. Here we remember Phil Asher doing what he did best: DJing.

A new mix I put together to capture the spirit of the world class ambassador of dance music aka Phil Asher aka Restless Soul / Phlash. Having had a brotherly 25 year long music & friendship with him, I thought it was only right to play music that reminded of him without playing his tracks, which I will do on my radio show on Sunday 31st 7pm live on globalsoulradio.com.  This set features leftfield vintage Afro, African, Afrobeat, Afro Funk, Afro / Techno Dub, Roots House, Disco and Jazz Funk to remind you of the music taste and vibe of brother Phil. He knew all the classics but was also a curve ball DJ, throwing random yet super obscure quirky tracks, just to surprise the dancefloor, whether you liked it or not, he was a real DJ not a functional juke box one. He was a total artist at work who lived, breathed and shone music daily. Enjoy, share and keep the legacy of Phil Asher alive, whether you knew not him or not. In Loving Memory of Philip Grahame Asher [1966 - 2021]

On Friday 22nd January 2021 our lovely friend Phil Asher suddenly passed away leaving his family, friends and the global dance music community mourning the loss of one of life’s unsung heroes and real good guys.

Without Phil Asher or PHLASH there would be no Reel People. Like so many artists and acts that came from London’s soulful dance scene in the early 2000s he was the LINK that made it all happen. He introduced all 3 of us and like all others we followed him in awe of his passion for music and love for his community and life.

Phil was an MPC beating, dancefloor destroying, hands in the air making, cup of tea and yum yum eating man like no other. Words can’t begin to describe just how infectious his laugh was and how warm his hugs were.

We are so grateful that Brian, Sheldon and all the guys at Traxsource have helped us to put this tribute page to Phil live on the site. Thanks also to all the friends of Phlash who have supported with charts and to Spinna for such a wonderful dj mix. For those who don’t know about Phil’s musical legacy, please take time to delve into this page and discover incredible joints and jams. For those who do know about Phil, we hope you find some hidden gems from this restless soul.

Phil was incredibly proud of his amazing son Marvin who has followed in his dad’s footsteps into music production under the aliases NGC and the Xutians. With this in mind his close friends have set up The Marvin Jupiter Asher fund to help Marvin continue his dream and continue the Asher legacy. Phil’s family & friends respectfully request that anyone who wishes to honour PHLASH is invited to make a contribution to the fund.

This is my tribute to the late great Phil Asher.
