Sun Glitters - Fading Days

Sun Glitters four-track EP, Fading Days. "Tell Me, Why You" starts things off with pulsating synths and pitch-shifted vocals working together to create a dream-like haze. "I Tear You Apart" uses side-chain interplay between kick, snare and bass to throw an off-kilter stop-and-go motion against a pitched vocal that is both sweet and unsettling. The title track, "Fading Days" highlights the shoegaze influences in Sun Glitters productions as the track engulfs the listener in a bed of fuzz. "Here It Comes" closes the EP with a wash of buzzing synths and etherial pads. Fading Days is the latest in a string of remarkably consistent releases from Sun Gltters. This EP was also included as the bonus tracks for the Japanese release of the LP, Scattered Into Light.

French producer my.head has never been one to buy into music industry norms or grasp at false hopes of fame and glory, preferring to glide under the radar for the better part of the last half-decade, churning out beatific, genre-spanning tracks on his own and across collaborations with grime entrepreneur Last Japan and Norwegian singer/producer Ida Dillan. With an aesthetic based in hip hop and R&B, my.head also touches on soundtrack music, ambient and IDM, bridging the gap between myriad sounds by tactfully drawing it all into his fuzzy, melancholic universe.
 
His newest project, the cinematically-focused En Noir, will be released on May 12 via Kastle’s Symbols label, and the effort comes out as his most complete, heart wrenching effort to date. Born out of hardship and a solitary, 18 month recording process, En Noir looks to Sci-Fi movies, video games and contemporary hip hop and R&B as touchstones, functioning as both a sonic accompaniment for a yet-to-be-realized film and a deeply affecting home listening experience.

And while you might recognize certain pop motifs on tracks like “I Want U” and “Torture” they’ve been abstracted through my.head’s singular outlook, the result being a tape that’s both deeply familiar and vividly alienating at the same time. When En Noir hits a fever pitch of emotion on tape closer “Reversed Wish”, a heartwrenching R&B ballad, drowned under a mile of sludge, it’s clear that the French artist didn’t pull any emotional punches across the EP. It might not be the festival-ready party music of our generation, but my.head has hit a universal nerve with En Noir and the tape will live on well beyond Summer 2015.

Emerging from the ever fertile music scene of Bristol, UK, rising electronic producer Stumbleine has already built a sizeable following with several self-released EPs and a recent compilation album, in addition to collaborative outings with fellow producer ASA. He also reports for active duty as one third of dubstep envelope pushers Swarms, whose music has found favour among tastemaker DJs such as Mary Anne Hobbs.

On Spiderwebbed, his enrapturing, genre transcending debut album proper; Stumbleine beautifully showcases the multifaceted nature of his music, seamlessly weaving fractured beats, synths, hazy distorted guitars and soulful vocals, to create glowing, expansive sonic vistas.

In keeping with the album’s title, the music hangs gossamer like, a delicate suspension of sound; beautifully anchored to an array of solid syncopated beats.

Guest vocalists CoMa and Steffaloo contribute their ample talents to the dreamy ‘The Beat My Heart Skips’ and a cover of Mazzy Star’s ‘Fade Into You’, and Birds of Passage lend warmth and poignancy to Catherine Wheel.

Elsewhere, silky, spectral RnB vocals spin plaintively through the shimmering ‘Capulet’ and Solar Flare, whilst the chilled, sweeping cadences of ‘Honey Comb’ and ‘The Corner Of Her Eye’ offer perfect counterweight to the taut urban swing of ‘If You’ and ‘Cherry Blossom.’
