Channeling South Pacific voodoo and edge of world melancholia, the album highlights electronic tangents from iconic NZ groups Blam Blam Blam & Headless Chickens. It dredges the cassette revelations of art avante-gardists’ Drone & Kim Blackburn, alongside bittersweet moments from Rupert & Norma O’Malley. There’s the infectious minimal wave of Ballare and a reprised electro-boogie dance suite (?!) from Tom Ludvigson & Graeme Gash. The furthest depths of Flying Nun’s catalog are also plundered- a brilliant earworm from Stiff Herbert and a mysterious “Roger” Knox birthday promo. Much like those tasty droplets that spray your face when you have to open a bottle of vino with a wooden spoon (don't ask,) this week we present another mid-week wake up from Wines of While. It's @colbaba, recorded live at Comfort Zone.

Treating all of us to an extra special all vinyl workout as the sun set on a Sunday, Col embraces the easy going musical vibe with a aplomb. Worldly beat science, squiggly synthesisers straight fromspace and pads smoother than an aged tempranillo are all on display over the course of this wonderful hour. It's a bright orange cruise down West Coast Highway in a floating car with the wind hitting just right.

Whack the Tape on and be whisked away, it's more of a listening experience than 'just a mixtape,' maybe keep things real and tune in during literal (or figurative) sunset . Spaghetti arrabbiata and lightly chilled glass of whatever is our suggestion - don't forget to get up and have a groove as well.

Shell Tape 25 - Col Baba - "Live from Comfort Zone"

The 1st of October 2020 marks 60 years since the independence of Nigeria. Nigeria as we know it today though is not the same Nigerian Federation from that day, having entered its Fourth Republic in 1999. Just as Nigeria has undergone transformation after transformation in the 20th century, so has its music. Nigerian musicians, such as Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, and the Lijadu Sisters, have always been at the forefront of boundary pushing sounds. Today, artists from Nigeria and the diaspora remain amongst the foremost in creative expression. This mix exemplifies the diversity of that legacy, showcasing the highlights from the motherland and beyond, with contemporary giants such as Yemi Alade, Burna Boy, Jidenna and Wizkid. All the artists here, albeit largely Yoruba, bring an eclectic mix of firebrand sounds that speak to the history of Nigeria through their sounds, as well as its present and future, through their words.
