Dave & Maurissa - Open Me Up

Two very solid cuts here from St Petersburg, a producer you suspect gets up in the morning and knocks out three decent disco jams before most of us have finished our coffee. In the red corner we have 'Cherry Funk' itself, a midtempo nu-disco/boogie/funk gem with wistful male vocal snips, Rhodes squiggles and lush chords. In the blue corner, meanwhile, 'Let It Go' is a warm-up friendly affair in which barely-there snippets of crowd chatter eventually cede space to an R&B-ish female vocal, with both sitting atop an unhurried, luxurious, lounge-y backdrop. Now you just need a poolside and some sunshine!

This is my new edit of the Re-Disco series, I think it doesn't need any further introduction. It's a song from 1980 by a Punk Rock band, it's a track with Hip Hop, Disco and Funk connotations, influences given by the meeting with Nile Rodgers and Chic during their short stay at the Power Station, but with my contribution it became even more disco, a RE-DISCO indeed. If you're a fan of DJ Supermarkt's 'Too Slow To Disco' series you'll want to to check for this new three-tracker from Ben Jamin immediately, because the Liverpool-based producer - who's racked up releases on the likes of Hot Gorilla, Discoholics Anonymous, Hot Digits and, yes, Too Slow To Disco - captures that mid-70s yacht rock and Quiet Storm soul vibe perfectly. The title track is a sleek, sophisticated slow jam with jazzy overtones - if you'd told this writer it was a long-lost Captain & Tenille cut, I'd have believed you! - while 'Destiny' treads a more straight-up disco path and 'I'm Dancing' drops down into a low-slung funk groove, but you'll have to pick your own standout here... all three are so good that picking a favourite seems a tad redundant!
