<World Beat> Some facts you should know. Suns of Arqa have been on the World Beat Music scene since 1979. They played at the very first Womad Music Festival in Shepton Mallet at the personal invitation of Peter Gabriel. Enough said. Having performed over the years at many major European festivals such as Glastonbury, Big Chill, Telerama Dub festival to mention a  few, this intriguing outfit  are best known for their fusion of Indian music and electro dub. They have always had a strong indigenous element to their compositions. So imagine my surprise when I popped this into the CD player to discover an album of Leonard Cohen cover songs. Sound interesting? Or maybe you’re thinking what the heck? Let me tell you Stranger Music is a phenomenal reinterpretation of Leonard Cohen like I’ve never heard before. Fusing their signature world beat elements, tight electronica and dub with some absolutely gorgeous vocal delivery if I had not known that these were Leonard Cohen covers, I may not have guessed it, such is the magnificent reconstruction of his songs. I cannot recommend this enough for any serious world beat fan. Simply superb.

Maximum respect is due to Suns of Arqa creator and musical visionary Michael Wadada who supplies the full fat bass lines, creating a spaced out dub-dance experience of power, depth, and beauty - meditative and eternal.

Suns of Arqa have materialised as a musical collective, combining the ancient Hindustani raga systems with Piobaireachd and Nyabinghi roots drumming. They appear intermittently at the seasonal festivals and sacred ritual spaces, where they are a vehicle for the positive raising of vibration, connecting with both the sensory and infinite worlds, for the on going evolution of all sentient beings.

'There is No Danger Here' is a hypnotic & heady mix, featuring the gifted Johar Ali from New Delhi on Violin, Angel Eye's soaring Vocals, while Wadada provides the apocalyptic chant to create a potent & intense collaboration.

'Pure Reality' features all star reggae heads Country Rankin and Sticksman, collaborating on an avant-dub hybrid complete with rocksteady vocals. Wadada drives the sound on chromatic harmonica, while Angel Eye adds eastern delight with some chilled ethereal vocals.

As Wadada states:
'Before language became a formation of words, music was, and still is in other spheres, the means of communication between souls'.

SUNS OF ARQA transmit a deeply spiritual vibration that merges cultures, faiths and musical genres.

Michael Wadada continues to defy all terms of musical reference with 'SEVEN'. Creating a new hybrid of Christian and Hindu mysticism layered with alchemy. 'SEVEN' combines Gabriel Faure's Requiem mass with early rumblings of Dub Step, Hindustani Ragas and Nyabinghi Dub Poetry... a unique and historic album. Recorded at the legendary Sawmill Studio in Cornwall and the Gayan Uttejak Studio in Budapest.
The conceptual story line features an impressive cast on the Arqa stage with John Cooper-Clarke as Ezekiel; Professor Stanley Unwin as Erasmus; Helen Watson as the Maid of Orleans; Sanyogita Kumari and Sarah Wildwitch as the Celtic sisters of Wyrd and Kadir Durvesh as Kali the destroyer. The effect is both fascinating and impressive.
