Akul, Akul, Akul... Who's Akul...? Asks nobody in Sydney or most of Europe by now. This dude is taking over! We're so here for it. From his almost viral free releases of edits of Gimme Da Weed, and the Round The Twist theme, to a solid back catalogue of tunes on the much respected Extra Spicy and Finespun labels, known for their incredible production quality, Akul is fast becoming a star in the worldwide UKG scene. 
We couldn't be happier to have brought Akul on board for the July party. We set him a task of combining his 2 loves over the course of two hours. Play some UKG, finish on Jungle. What we got was a masterclass in DJing.

After 11 years, this Saturday will be the last for Spin The Bottle.

But Ry and Johnny are not leaving! We’re moving to Saturday Sunset from June 3, with new co-hosts soon to join too. With a new era we thought it was time to stop the bottle spinning.

Thank you to all the co-hosts that have been with us along the way, starting with Avani Dias and Fearghal Shannon in 2012, then followed by Andy Garvey and then Lauren Hansom – all of whom have gone on to do incredible things post-STB. 

Thank you to each and every guest who has contributed to the show over the years. Artists such as Honey Dijon, Tim Sweeney, Jennifer Loveless, False Witness, DJ Plead, Kuya Neil, Salllvage, DAWS, Lithe, Sepsaay, Bisoux, and so many more in the full archive you can listen to on our SoundCloud page. For this week's show, we gave the reins to Koori Radio mainstay DJ Naian in the lead up to Invasion Day.

Hailing from Northern NSW, DJ Naian moved to Sydney to study dance at NAISDA Dance College and has broadcast on Koori Radio on and off for 20 years. DJ Naian got his DJ practice in on hours upon hours of live broadcasts. 

DJ Naian most recently performed at Heaps Gay's Roadwerk street festival, but has played at Edge Greenway, Big Dance Sydney, MCA Art Bar, Vivid Sydney, Love Wins Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Co-op, Liquorice All Sorts Mardi Gras, and countless Koori Radio outside broadcasts.

My name is Taylor and my preferred pronouns are they and she. I live in Brooklyn! Fun fact about myself… I used to teach hip hop dance in the early 2000’s. 

How is everything going with you right now?

It’s going pretty well despite the circumstances, which of course are not ideal. Been navigating a lot of personal challenges lately, from a break-up to family drama, but strangely I feel ok, like all is looking up….something in my attitude has shifted

What are you missing from pre-covid life?

Dancing. With people. More than anything.

Any fun goals for winter time?

3rd installment of Dance Floor Epiphanies for Resident Advisor is happening, and I also have an ambient release coming out for the boutique cassette label, Enmossed. And I want to finish my memoir! (maybe it will actually happen this time). 

Who currently inspires you music-wise?
ASC (always). Europa. Ma Sha Ru. May Vary. Abby Echiverri. E.C.C.O. Pugilist. Air Max ‘97. Eris Drew and Octo Octa. Datach’i. H.E.R. Noumen. And I’ve been kind of obsessed with heavy bass music lately like Ternion Sound and TMSV. those lower chakra vibes

Favorite weird drug experience?

The very first time I took acid I accidentally took too much and merged with the soul of another human until we no longer could distinguish ourselves from one another. I saw his third eye blinking on his forehead, as real as an actual eye, and then we became telepathic, and then we astral projected as one entity into the godhead. It was cool.

Why do you think it's important to share music?

I believe it’s the most unifying force in the world. It’s the most human language, and gives us access to our emotions in a way that brings joy. And it connects us beyond the mind… it connects us through the body, and through the heart. 

What would you like to see in the future for the dance community?

Cohesion & Unification. A return to how things used to be, without trying to emulate the past too much. Meaning, a sense of PLUR that permeates not only the dance floor but the social spaces, online and physical.
