Thanks to the massive popularity of those games, certain equally massive expectations had been set. In the years that followed, publishers and developers strived to outdo one another year after year, creating larger maps and allowing more players to roam them. Everything has changed thanks to a random survival game launching with a half-baked Battle Royale mode. These days, if a game doesn't offer an expansive cooperative or competitive option, something is wrong, despite how tacked on and out of place the resulting experience would be. This trend doesn't seem to be losing steam any time soon, but will hype for Battle Royale modes eventually dwindle?
