Randomized controlled trials are common in agriculture research which is something I am currently undertaking in Cambodia. I would not put it in the big data arena though as by its nature is an analysis of samples of the populations under inquiry, thereby selecting a subset of the population rather than the total. I wonder your thoughts around the ideas that with the cheaper and easier means to collect data that sample sets may move towards the population size rather than sampling which was necessary due to logistics and cost in the past. Reading "Big Data: A revolution that will transform how we live, work and think" recently the concept of sampling studies may begin to be questioned as we might likely find ways to passively collect large amounts of data from subjects going about their normal business. Can this large data set provide greater insights that can not be understood through random sub sampling of populations under inquiry. Interesting area of data science.
