In n this week’s episode, host Kristin Hayes talks with Kristen McCormack, Resources for the Future’s newest research fellow, about McCormack’s scholarly work on the impact of extreme temperatures on student absences, disciplinary infractions, and later-life outcomes. McCormack explains how she combined student data from a large urban school district in the United States, information about the presence or absence of air-conditioning, and environmental data to understand the causal link between temperature and student behavior. McCormack’s work reveals that hot temperatures lead to an increase in absences and disciplinary referrals and that school air-conditioning may be especially important in maintaining a safe learning environment for students as extreme temperatures become more common.

De mon point de vue, les professionnels du traitement des documents ont énormément de choses à apprendre aux professionnels de la donnée. A condition que ces derniers acceptent d'écouter, et parfois de se remettre en question. Mais l'inverse est également vrai. Les professionnels du document doivent accepter que le monde évolue, et que la transformation numérique impact le fondement de leur métier. Les professionnels de la donnée ont également des choses à partager avec eux.
Je rêve d'une entreprise où gouvernance des données, archives, documentation, informatique... se rencontreront autour d'une même table pour définir une stratégie commune, au service de la valorisation du patrimoine informationnel. Et Margot souhaite elle-aussi que nos métiers dialoguent plus ensemble.

Tofa Fakunle is currently the assistant General Manager at Canadian Premier League cub, Cavalry FC.

Before this current role, he was the football operations manager at the same club, and then before that, a professional player.

Based in Calgary, Cavalry FC are one of 8 teams that compete in CPL, which is a relatively new league, having only started in 2019. The league is the only professional league in Canada, which offers a lot of potential to grow, especially with the World Cup arriving in 2026.

In this conversation we speak about how Tofa has to look after and manage the clubs’ budgets, the rules set by the leagues around squad building, and how Tofa and his team source players, for free, from all over the World.

We touch on data, the MLS, and a bit more on the overall football landscape within Canada.

Data & Digital Gaps in Mental Health

Guernsey student Madelaine Russell was the 2024 beneficiary of a prestigious bursary which has transported her to the other side of the world and changed her horizons. Each year, just one sixth form student from the Bailiwick is eligible for a fully funded place at Brock University in Ontario as part of the historic links between Canada and Guernsey.

In this ODPA podcast, the political science student sits down for a conversation with Bailiwick Data Protection Commissioner Brent Homan – who just so happens to hail from Canada. They discuss life in a cold climate, how her interest in public outreach and human rights led to her becoming the first successful applicant of the ODPA’s new intern programme and their common love of sports.
