Winter - Waiting For The Summer

East London dream-pop band ‘Zooz' sign to Super Fan 99 and stream debut track ‘Surf In the Storm’

It’s not often a band eats up column inches in NME and gets signed all before playing a single note live. Happily we were the label that signed London daydreamers Zooz and are thrilled to be putting out their first official release this August. 

Born out of a transatlantic romance gone wrong, writer Kieron returned from a month spent in California with a head full of songs and soon hooked up with friend Mike to form Zooz. Soon they were joined by other friends from the DIY scene and became five.

Bedroom demos and iPhone recordings quickly evolved as the five piece laid their hands on Kieron’s songs and quietly chipped away at bringing them to life. 

From their San Francisco beginnings they took on a new shape growing up in the shade of darkened east end rehearsal rooms. A month or two later ‘Surf In The Storm’ appeared anonymously online and quickly whipped up an internet storm with its brooding vocals and intense underpinning bass. With no press picture, members listed or back story, soon NME et al were asking “Who are Zooz and where did they come from?”

A debut vinyl EP release arrives this August via Brixton label Super Fan 99. In the meantime you can see the band play their very first live shows this July.

Zooz - True Love

Hailing from Rennes in France, meet garage sensations 'The Madcaps' Debut single and album coming to Super Fan 99 this summer.

The Madcaps hail from Rennes in western France and make the kind of jangle that instantly transports you to the west coast 1966 before the first bar is even out. With a passion for all things analogue they create a sound so authentic that it’s hard to believe this is a 2015 release and not a re-issue of some long lost gem. Their tremolo-rich ballads filled with vocal harmonies are sweet enough to move a German bulldozer to tears and serve as perfect seduction material. 

Having overjoyed France with their 45 in April 2014, they return in 2015 with a debut full length, set to unveil a little more of their clear penchant for American garage, and the English beat music of the 60s. A hyper limited vinyl release lands on UK shores next month followed by the self titled album. Coming to Super Fan 99 in the UK and Gnar Tapes in the US this summer,  fans of Allah Las, Black Lips and The Kinks will be crazy for this one. The Madcaps plan to prove yet again that Rennes is more than ever the bastion of tricolour garage. They tour Europe and the UK in October, full tour to be announced soon but in the meantime note down the 21st! It's sure to be a killer night!

The Madcaps - I Knew It All

INTRODUCING PSYCH-FOLK LA NATIVE, PEARL CHARLES 

At the young age of 23, Pearl Charles already has deep roots in the Los Angeles music community. An LA Native, Pearl embodied California rock and roll cool even before she took her natural position as a figure in the local music scene (and beyond). Pearl started logging miles on the road with her first band, old-timey Americana duo The Driftwood Singers, at age 18, followed by a lengthy stint drumming and singing in garage-pop band, The Blank Tapes. The Blank Tapes toured extensively and earned accolades from Rolling Stone and The New Yorker for their sunny lo-fi surf rock. Along the way, Pearl collaborated with artists such as Jonathan Wilson, Stephen McBean (Black Mountain), Farmer Dave Scher (Beachwood Sparks) and Johnathan Rice and toured extensively internationally supporting diverse artists such as Father John Misty, Matt Costa, Thee Oh Sees, Kim Deal, The Growlers, Allah Las and Mystic Braves to name a few, as well as earning a BFA in Music from CalArts.

Embarking on a solo career in 2015, Pearl is set to solidify her own name and place by releasing a 6 song debut EP on Super Fan 99 this summer with the ever reliable Burger Records handling US duties. Pearl recorded her self-titled EP track by track with a select group of producers and a little help from her friends, many of whom are notable L.A. musicians in their own right including Joel Jerome (La Sera, Cherry Glazerr) and Taylor Locke (Rooney). Though she draws inspiration from the legendary scenes of the 60's and 70's, from Laurel Canyon to The Factory, from Haight-Ashbury to Muscle Shoals, she also counts contemporary artists amongst her influences such as Tame Impala, Mac DeMarco, Sharon Van Etten and Jenny Lewis, to name a few. Pearl Charles writes and sings songs with a distinctly unique voice, creating a sound that is both timeless yet undeniably here, now.

The Madcaps - Nothing To Do

DOO-WOP PSYCH JANGLE FROM CORNWALL. MEET FALMOUTH’S GODDAM NOBODY.

MINI ALBUM ‘NO LUST FOR LIFE’ OUT 02.10.15 ON CLEAR 10” VIA SUPER FAN 99.

Cornwall isn’t known for its famous musical exports but that could all soon change. Over the past few years a scene has been growing in Falmouth which owes as much to the records of the 50’s and 60’s as it does those of today. While many of its bands borrow from the California sound these bands come from a very different coastal backdrop. As soon as you press play it’s clear that grey skies loomed heavy over Goddam Nobody’s beach. Initially bringing to mind Christopher Owens and The Growlers the songs which make up No Lust for Life have an underpinning distinctly British sound. Remember when Echo & The Bunnymen covered The Doors for the Lost Boys movie soundtrack? Yeh THAT sound!

Beginning as a bedroom project Matthew Oliver wrote a collection of demos influenced by his hometown contemporaries and eventually formed Goddam Nobody in 2014. As his songs appeared online, blogs and labels started to take note. Lauren Laverne played a track on her BBC 6 Music show and Art is Hard Records soon included them on a compilation. A further EP was released for free while Matthew and his new band started playing their first shows. No Lust for Life is the first official release and sees Goddam Nobody explore a more polished expansive sound than the comfy lo-fi of old. Featuring members of Lost Dawn, Golden Dregs, The Red Cords and mastered by Dan E Brown (Ringo Death Star, Tomorrows Tulips) it’s a record which is a perfect snapshot of Falmouth’s burgeoning musical underground. Now based in London Goddam Nobody are regulars on the DIY scene and collecting fans with every show. Look out for a full UK tour in the fall of 2015.

No Lust for Life is released on hyper limited clear lathe cut 10” with hand stamped numbered sleeves on 02.10.15. A London launch for the mini album takes place on October 5th at The Finsbury with a full Super Fan supporting cast.

Goddam Nobody - Stranger Daze

We first discovered Dante Elephante on a trip to LA at the start of this year. On asking staff at an Echo Park record store for a recommendation of good pop tunes they had no hesitation in handing us a cassette of Dante Elephante’s EP ‘German Aquatics’ Sure enough it delivered as soon as we pressed play, alas that tape is now almost worn out. It was then our mission to make a UK release happen and we’re very pleased to now be able to deliver the debut full length album. 

California surf hooks and jangling guitars chime while a 60s British influence bleeds through the Santa Barbara bands songs making us feel right at home. Reminiscent of Real Estate and the tender side of early Weezer their tunes are instant and unshakable. A hyper limited white square 7” of ‘Never Trust a Junkie’ is released on 09.10.15 with the debut album titled ‘Anglo Saxon Summer’ following on 16.10.15.

Dante Elephante formed in Santa Barbara in 2010. Cutting their teeth on the local scene they soon caught the ears or local radio which led to a first 7” release in 2013. In 2014 a debut EP appeared via esteemed LA label Lolipop and quickly sold out. More recently the band were hand picked by Converse to be their rubber tracks download of the week  which led to them playing the opening of flagship store in San Francisco. Dante Elephante - Never Trust A Junkie

San Francisco songwriter Alexi Glickman began opening shows as Sandy's in 2012 while on the road with Little Wings. On his new EP, Prom, he wraps five melodic gems with layers of vintage tape echo and open ­tuned Stratocaster shimmer for a dreamy late­ summer slow dance. Alexi recalls, “my first memories of music were in these big echoey rooms watching my Dad and his dance company rehearse. I wanted to make an EP that had a presence like that.”  Prom features album art by Nat Russell that depicts a lone guitarist playing for a seemingly vast, empty landscape— save for the multitude of glowing stars in the cosmos. It’s a lonely image but also a transcendent one­­ in the same spirit as the opening lines of Chris Bell’s I Am The Cosmos, “Every Night I tell myself I am the cosmos / I am the wind / But that don’t get you back again.”

Lyrically, Prom deals with a similar kind of social desolation— when friends drift away after school or turn their backs on their old friends as they pair off to get married. “Sometimes there’s an openness of spirit that begins to fade in people as they grow older— songs like "Consolidated Identity" are a kind of last dance with that person before they become someone else.” Recorded mostly live to a 1960s Scully 4-track in a house in the Sierra Foothills of Northern California, Prom centers around Alexi’s guitar— an on old Fender, open tuned, echoplexed—reverberating in the old wood panels of the forest dwelling ­turned recording studio.

Bringing to mind the lucid guitar playing of Peter Green and the hazy Americana of Beachwood Sparks, Super Fan instantly fell head over heels for Sandys easy charms and are sure you’ll feel the same. Prom is released on limited translucent purple cassette and vinyl on 30.11.15.

Husband Material started life as many bands seem to these days. Boy/Girl in bedroom starts making music on a laptop, music gets too big for bedroom and too big for laptop. Real life humans join to perform bedroom songs and that’s usually where it ends. In the case of this band their songs kept growing sonically while the rooms they played started to get bigger and the bedroom became a distant memory. 
Self -described as “Anorak Pop for the masses” Husband Material’s songs are instantly accessible, danceable and thought provoking in equal measures. Made up of friends and lovers, frontman Richard Board recruited fellow band members, Charlotte Desborough, Zac Harris and George Rothman to start playing his synth heavy songs he’d recorded during the Winter of 2013. 

Testing the water in spring this year the band posted a first track and calling card which soon clocked up thousands of hits and the attention of the blog masses. Later a debut single arrived via acclaimed Bristol indie ‘Art is Hard’ and soon sold out. Talk Too Much goes one step beyond previously heard tracks with their boldest production and biggest chorus yet. Husband Material - What Did I Do Wrong

BURGER RECORDS STAR FLETCHER C. JOHNSON READIES DEBUT UK RELEASE. WILDER THAN ME OUT 01.04.16 WITH NEW ALBUM ‘LESSON IN TENDERNESS’ FOLLOWING ON 08.04.16

You may not yet of heard of Brooklyn’s Fletcher C. Johnson yet he’s been a mainstay in the U.S underground for some time, a hero among the Burger Records roster. Super Fan had been long time admirers of his folk-driven pop music and are thrilled to finally introduce him to the UK. Covering the spectrum of 60s and 70s rock from Buddy Holly to The Ramones, The Kinks to Neil Young, Fletcher writes the type of soaring choruses that rattle around your brain for weeks. 

Lesson in Tenderness is his third full length and was 3 years in the making. After years of touring the east coast, Fletcher crammed his guitars, amps, synthesizers, and shakers into a van and took the band out west ending up living in a practice space in Orange County.  There he began recording Lesson In Tenderness.  He bathed in a sink, slept on a van seat, pissed in a jug, and made sweet classic pop.  Two guitars (Fletcher and Adam Meisterhans), bass (Todd Martin), and drums (Tom O’Brien) were laid down first.  Everything else had to be recorded in the middle of the night, when the practice space was deserted and quiet.  

The band returned to New York and left Fletcher to couch surf around Los Angeles, staying with friends and finding spaces to mix the new record. One night he would be in Silver Lake, sleeping behind a couch, and the next he’d be on the floor of the Burger Records shop.  Finally childhood friend, Kyle Thomas, hit the road with his band King Tuff and left Fletcher an open bedroom to work in.  Fletcher grew up in Vermont playing music with Kyle and spent years touring in King Tuff’s band.  Now, while Tuff was on the road with a new lineup, Fletcher had access to Kyle’s acoustic guitar, stereo, and palm tree laden back yard.  Days were spent running around the hills of Los Angeles while, at night, he put the final touches on what would become Lesson In Tenderness.

Wilder Than Me is the first single to be taken from the album and is released on hyper limited clear, square 5” vinyl. It’s an instant slice of whirlwind pop that leaves you dizzy like you just rode a rollercoaster, or a song from the Happy Days jukebox on speed. On top of this Super Fan will be reissuing the long sold out, cult classic ‘Salutations’ for the first time in the UK. Wilder Than Me is out on 01.04.16 with Lesson in Tenderness following later that month.

While travelling America last year we stumbled across Sugar Candy Mountain playing at an Echo Park record store and were instantly hooked. Always at the back of our mind we got in contact this year and to our delight had timed a speculative email to perfection as the band had just finished recording new album ‘666’ It’s a stunning record which we are delighted to be releasing on cassette in the UK this June. Ahead of that we’ll be releasing a single titled ‘Eye On You’ on octagon shaped white vinyl, as with all our releases this will be ultra limited. 

Eye on You is a perfect slice of sunshine indie-pop sounding like The Pastels or Camera Obscura if they had come from California rather than Scotland. 

Here’s a little more about the band…

Sugar Candy Mountain deliver carefully built psychedelic odes bringing to mind Abbey Road era Beatles and more recent acts such as Cate Le Bon and Frankie Cosmos. 666 feels like something unearthed from a box of records found in your dad’s garage, glowing wistfully with vintage inspired tones, rambling organs, fuzzed out guitars, shimmering keys and sprawling drums. Ash Reiter’s woolly voice croons with icy warmth of Francoise Hardy, while Will Halsey’s tender Lennon-esque vocals uncoil with easy languor. Recorded with Jason Quever of Papercuts, the bands sophomore album sits comfortably between 60’s Laurel Canyon bliss and the more modern production of Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips/Tame Impala).

Navy Gangs are a pop quintet currently residing in the washed out and overly demanding area of New York City.  Singer/Guitarist Matthew Tillwick, Guitarist Noah Kohll, and Drummer Gavin Cordaro began orchestrating music together in 2012 at Central High School in the red light district of Omaha where they failed their junior years miserably. For 2 months they took jobs working in the desert dome at the Henry Doorly zoo until they saved enough of their dismal wages for one way bus passes to New York City, where they moved in temporarily with Kohll's grandmother Estelle. After making some new friends in Washington Square park, the 3 boys found themselves in a basement scene in little Italy. It was there that they met their bassist, Wilson Keithline from Providence, Rhode Island. Together they became Navy Gangs, a troupe who's songs grab influence from dark rooms, hopeless romanticism, table wine, and back page humour. 90s bands like Superchunk, Archers of Loaf and Dinosaur Jr spring to mind when listening which had us instantly hooked but there is also a definite hint of influence of bands from their hometown label Saddle Creek too.

The Self Titled Navy Gangs EP was recorded in Noah’s grandmother's home by Joey Kimono straight to 2 inch tape and was mixed and mastered by Steve Marion of Delicate Steve.  The EP also features vocals and percussion from long-time friend Coley Gold, a nomadic vixen who plays shows with the band often but never rings ahead of time (just shows up). Derived from heartbreak, endless internet streaming, and the pain that is being social, Navy Gangs debut EP is a pop miracle.

In May of 2016 the band signed a multi-record deal with No Roads in the US and Super Fan are thrilled to be putting the debut EP out this side of the pond.

Listening to Space Mountain feels like being wrapped in a warm blanket after coming in from a freezing winters eve which naturally makes this a perfect summer release. The reason for this is, in truth Super Fan have never coped well in the summer heat, it's just not the weather we are accustomed to here in London. Call us miserable but we often miss those winter bus journeys home from college, rain hammering down on the steamed up windows while the records on our walkmans let us drift off to another time and place. In Big Sky we have a new favourite soundtrack in waiting. The 9 tracks which make up 'Big Sky’ bring to mind 90s Merge faves such as Neutral Milk Hotel and The Magnetic Fields or a country inflected Alex G.

Initially inspired by the DIY music he discovered during college, Cole has been recording and self releasing an album every year since 2013. Big Sky marks his first full international release and he intends to continue the project in whichever direction his inspirations take him.

The first 25 copies of the cassette release will include a square one sided lathe cut vinyl of ’Never Lonely’ As always these will be one copy per person and you’ll have to be quick to grab one. Space Mountain - Never Lonely

Murph & The Gazorpos are likely the UK’s finest purveyors of power pop right now, I mean there must be tonnes of bands out there doing it but none are nailing the sound quite like these guys. There’s a cartoon like energy and enthusiasm to them that has their tunes bursting at the seams. When you listen to the EP it’s almost like the songs are trying to escape their analogue confines. Imagine Elvis Costello on speed and you’re starting to get there. Super Fan are thrilled to be releasing ‘A Little Reaction’ this October and are sure that you’ll find it just as infectious as we do. 

The Gazorpos is the latest project of Charlie Murphy who is best known for being one third of much loved Falmouth punk band The Red Cords. Earlier in the year we stumbled upon Charlie’s DIY hit ‘I Wana Be (Someone Else)’ and instantly started spinning it on our radio show. Sounding like a lost 70s hit or something straight outta the Burger catalogue we were surprised to learn he was a dude in his twenties living on our own back doorstep in Cornwall. His next incarnation would be Murph & The Gazorpos, a self released EP earlier this year on his own Nerve Centre label came and quickly sold out. The new EP will be available in an edition of just 30(X-Ray style)cassettes each packaged with a micro 5” vinyl of ‘You Did It’ backed with an unheard bonus track. Keep your eyes peeled for a pre-order in the next couple of weeks. The brilliantly executed art is a lino cut stamp by Dan Russell from The Hipshakes and the record was mastered by Dan E Brown (Glitterburst, Tomorrows Tulips). As you know, our releases sell out pretty quick and are limited to one copy per household so be sure to stay tuned by following us on the usual social media platforms. Murph & The Gazorpos will be touring the UK later this year.

And so another 12 months has passed at Super Fan 99 and we're closing out the year with a release which is a little special for us. Londoner Alessi Laurent Marke is an artist we've been a fan of and followed for some years so when the chance arrived to work with her we didn't hesitate. We are delighted to be releasing her new single 'Wives' ahead of a new full length which is set to be released early next year. 

Her cosy folk pop has evolved over the years from it's humble bedroom beginnings and these days has more in common with Cocteau Twins or Charlotte Gainsbourg than the somewhat lazy Joanna Newsom comparisons of old. From uploading home recordings to Myspace to working with Bright Eyes in Nebraska and touring with Jenny Lewis and M.Ward it's been a long and winding road for Alessi which has no doubt shaped her songs. Wives sounds like a very British tale being told in a California desert setting. It's a beautifully produced and expertly executed taster from the new record which will no doubt excite fans both old and new.

Wives will be backed by another new album track 'DLD' and will be released on 8" lathe cut vinyl. As always each copy is hand cut by our friends in Tuscon Arizona and will be limited to one copy per household with only 40 available worldwide. Since making the move to London from his home of Cornwall a couple of years back Matthew Oliver aka Goddam Nobody has done some serious growing. Whether that was forced by the sink or swim nature of living in the UK’s capital or not we don’t know but it has sure drawn out of him his best set of songs yet and once again Super Fan will be releasing the results this February. 

While 2015’s Stranger Daze EP was a bold step from his comfortable lo-fi bedroom world to hi-fi, the Dead Beat EP marks another huge step on for Oliver. The shy but charming vocals of early recordings now replaced with a confident delivery that demands your attention. Layers of echo chamber BV’s tower over a tight vibrato jangle adding an eerie cloud of disappointment to Oliver’s determined vocal. It’s six songs itch with the anxiety and isolation of trying to get by in the city while lead track ‘Dead Beat’ almost leans in to 90s baggy territory with it’s stonery hypnotic groove.

It’s an EP which borrows from the past while keeping one foot firmly in 2017. Unlike many psych revivalists it doesn’t hide in oceans of old analogue tape delay but embraces a clean hi-fidelty sound of today. Recorded by Benjamin Woods (Holiday Ghosts) and featuring members The Red Cords, Pastel Colours and The Golden Dregs, it may of been conceived in London but very much belongs to the excellent Falmouth scene.

The Dead Beat EP will be available in boxed cassette complete with download or as a bundle which includes a limited t-shirt of which only 20 are available worldwide. If you dig The Growlers, Ride, Teenage Fanclub, Brian Jonestown Massacre, a pint and smoke in a grey coastal town in 1969 this is a must!

Canadian songwriter Calvin Love returns with a follow up to his acclaimed Arts & Crafts release with new EP ‘ECDYSIS’ You may not yet of heard of him but his myth is fast growing beyond his Alberta roots. Calvin is a self-proclaimed student of David Lynch and Jim Jarmusch soundtracks which clearly bleeds through his songs that explore the darkest corners of the human psyche while still maintaining a pop gloss.
Suave and imposing he casts a long trench coated shadow as if he were Gambit or Rick Deckard. While his hometown contemporaries Mac Demarco and Sean Nicholas Savage sometimes seem unavoidable in the music press Calvin has become something of a best kept secret. Title ‘Ecdysis' is the process of shedding an old skin to facilitate growth. Calvin explains;

“During the demoing process, I pulled five songs from a batch that comprises my next LP and I decided to release them as an EP. I envision these songs like a bridge from my previous methods of working, to a path to something new and evolved"

 It’s songs capture something of that mid 80s magic when a turning of the musical tides saw artists experimenting with synths and transitioning from their comfort zones of old equipment to a bold new world. There's a nostalgic air to the melodies and instrumentation which takes us back in time while still feeling utterly contemporary and essential. It comes at possibly the richest point in his songwriting career;

"This is my absolute best work. It was a very terrifying process but now it is done it was all worth it"

Fans of Sean Nicholas Savage, George Harrison, Split Enz and golden hour drives on the west coast in 1985 will be instantly charmed by this record.

ECDYSIS will be released on limited cassette in the UK by Super Fan 99 and vinyl in the US via Modern Sky Entertainment. European live dates are being planned for this Summer.

Super Fan have been long time admirers of Sofia Coppola's movies having having fallen under her spell in 1999 after renting The Virgin Suicides from our local Blockbuster. Film after film was soundtracked with the most impeccable selections playing a key role in the overall aesthetic of her movies. It seems the part the music plays in transporting you to her worlds has not gone unnoticed with the vinyl soundtracks of Lost In Translation and Marie Antoinette sometimes selling for up to £300 a piece. 

We asked bands from our label and beyond to choose songs from the soundtracks and cover them for this unique release and the response was great. Bands from as far a field as China, New Zealand and Scotland have contributed tracks ranging from lo-fi bedroom 4 track recordings to full band studio versions and we are now very excited to present 'Sofia Songs' The compilation marks the 50th release on the label and perfectly marries our love of film and DIY music culture. 

Illustrator and long time Super Fan collaborator Kieran Gabriel has designed the sleeve and each boxed cassette copy will also include a movie script style guide book with detailed facts on each movie and it's music. Songs by Air, Phoenix, Frank Ocean, The Jesus and Mary Chain and many more reworked by your favourite Super Fan bands, what's not to love? Just in time for the release of the much anticipated 'The Beguiled' Sofia Songs is available from 07.07.17 with a London launch event/film screening TBC.

We asked bands from our label and beyond to choose songs from the soundtracks and cover them for this unique release and the response was great. Bands from as far a field as China, New Zealand and Scotland have contributed tracks ranging from lo-fi bedroom 4 track recordings to full band studio versions and we are now very excited to present 'Sofia Songs' The compilation marks the 50th release on the label and perfectly marries our love of film and DIY music culture. 

Illustrator and long time Super Fan collaborator Kieran Gabriel has designed the sleeve and each boxed cassette copy will also include a movie script style guide book with detailed facts on each movie and it's music. Songs by Air, Phoenix, Frank Ocean, My Bloody Valentine and many more reworked by your favourite Super Fan bands, what's not to love? Just in time for the release of the much anticipated 'The Beguiled' Sofia Songs is available from 07.07.17 with a London launch event/film screening TBC.

We are very excited to introduce you to Los Angelenos 'The Entire Universe' whose new double A side single 'Just Don't/Can They Hear?' will be released on square picture disc vinyl next month. 

As you'd imagine from a Super Fan signing they are a band who paint songs in brilliant technicolor, rich in melody, reflective yet hopeful. We were quickly endeared by their warm tape sound, widescreen arrangements and yearning vocals. Wipe away the California desert dust and there's a definite underlying nod to the British psych sound of the late 60s. 

The band was formed by Jeffertitti Moon who had previously worked closely with Father John Misty and cult LA band Corners. With a handful of new songs written and recorded he set about finding the right musicians who would not only compliment the songs but translate them to a live setting. A series of residencies in both Los Angeles and New York followed complimented by a string of singles and Super Fan are very pleased to be releasing their latest.

'Can They Hear?' gives a taste of what to expect on the flip side of this release. Look out for a premier of 'Just Don't' next week and expect the debut full length later this spring with European dates TBC.

Boy Scouts is the project of songwriter Taylor Vick. Her latest EP ‘Hobby Limit’ was recorded in various houses across the Sunset district of San Francisco. Borrowing drum kits and other gear along the way it was also in part recorded at her Parents home and is her most complete set of songs to date.
 
Fragile, textured and instantly endearing, it shares that rare type of intimacy that makes the records of Frank Ocean, Sparklehorse and Elliott Smith so celebrated. Vicks has a true voice of her own unlike many of the bedroom artists finding their feet as writers. These songs will stick with you long beyond their three minute confines and we predict a bright future ahead.
 
Having initially been released on local tape label ‘Processional Cross’ Super Fan are thrilled to be re-releasing Hobby Limit with bonus track ‘Ruin’ on cassette next month in Europe.

You may remember last year we released the excellent 'Industria' from Santa Barbara multi-instrumentalist Erich Tomkinson AKA Dot Plaza. We did a limited tape which quickly sold out with his bubblegum psych-pop proving an instant hit with fans of the label. Not long after the release his studio was washed away in the mudslides. He then relocated to LA and built a new studio in his backyard to begin work on his next project. It felt only right that this be a fresh chapter with new songs and a new name. That name is GLOSSIES and we are thrilled to bring you the first taste from the album 'Cactus What You Peach'. 

This tune has a lush 360 video and a keyboard solo that sounds straight out of The Beach Boys 'Love You' album. Fans of Harry Nillson, George Harrison and Brian Wilson will be sure to dig this colourful, textured album when it finally arrives before the new year.

We truly believe a great compilation can be a rabbit hole to a whole new world of music. When I was 17 I picked up the 'Rough Trade Country' compilation on a whim at their shop in Covent Garden underneath Slam City Skates. This compilation was like a window to a new dimension and inspired me to form a band, learn new instruments and make new friends. We have always loved compilation releases here at Super Fan for those reasons with the 'Sofia Songs' release selling out instantly after some incredible press. We figured it was high time we did another. Super Fan Friend Service brings together a selection of our current favourite writers and bands from around the globe today. This compilation is so strong that any one of these songs could stand alone as a single in it’s own right. Simply put, its twelve tracks of brilliant, melodic, reflective pop music. 

Here’s where the “Friend Service” bit comes in and how it works… 

At the checkout section of the store there is a ‘Notes or Instructions’ box. Here you can type a personalised message along with the persons address you wish to gift the tape to. We will then add this to the inside of the J-card and post the tape direct to them. Equally if you wish to just order a cassette for yourself you can leave this part blank. 50p from each copy goes to Sense.org.uk which is a UK charity that aids deafblind children. Artwork is as always by the ace Shaun Miller. The compilation will also be available digitally on Bandcamp.

Matt McKee - Slow Decay

Born Fighters are from London and California. Perhaps it wasn’t the wisest choice for two friends with 5000 miles between them to form a band but sometimes you have to follow your instincts and that’s exactly how this band was born. 

Having met briefly at a show in London a couple of years prior, Luke was on vacation in LA when he decided to see if Peter was around for a beer. With a shared love of guitars and powerpop the two got on famously and a plan was hatched to write, rehearse and record a single all inside the three remaining days of Luke’s trip. Little Green Tree was the resulting tune and it beams with the west coast sunshine it was written under while retaining a dry British wit. 

Named after a Nick Lowe song ‘Born Fighters’ are Luke Barham and Peter Maffei. Mike Deluccia joins on drums and the session was engineered by Neil Wogensen in Highland Park. Art (as always) by Shaun Miller. A full EP is planned for this December as soon as Luke has saved money for a flight.

Rooftop Gardens transports us to a time of 8-track players, flared jeans, AM Radio and Creem magazine. The perfect backdrop to a lazy 70s California afternoon daydreaming of your high school crush. In fact, lead track ‘Circles’ wouldn’t feel at all out of place sound tracking Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused. Swirling guitar parts bring to mind Chris Bell Big Star while the forlorn vocal could be Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub making this a must for all power-pop fans. 

Originally from the Bay Area, Peter Maffei AKA Rooftop Gardens now lives in LA. As a gun for hire he has lent his guitar talents to Sugar Candy Mountain, Pearl Charles and The Blank Tapes among others. He currently plays in Cosmo Gold and is the USA half of transatlantic duo Born Fighters. 

Circles is backed by the equally heartfelt ‘Never Let Me Go’ which features a slide line straight out of George Harrisons pocket. Rooftop Gardens sits comfortably with the Super Fan back catalogue and we can’t wait to hear more later this year. The single is released digitally worldwide on 28.02.20.

Luke is from London and Peter is from California. Not so long ago the pair were strangers but through a shared love of 70s music, vintage guitars and their pets (Denny the cat and George the dog respectively) the universe brought them together in 2019. The two quickly became best of mates making light work of the 5000 miles that separated them. They describe the project as a “transatlantic power pop postal service” sending demos back and forth over the net and chipping away at song ideas from a distance. As you can imagine, organising a band practice is a little different than for most bands but not to be deterred they return this month with a follow up to debut ‘Little Green Tree’ titled ‘Shadow’. Lead vocal duties are shared on this bittersweet kicker which ruminates on the idea of trying to reclaim one’s identity post break-up. 

Who knows if an album will ever materialise but for now the project is something of an open book/sweet left hook which the two plan to work on whenever in the same country whether that be England or the USA. 

The somewhat ironically named band are Peter Maffei and Luke Barham. Mike Deluccia once again joins on drums and the session was engineered and mixed by Neil Wogensen in Highland Park, L.A. Art as always by the ace Shaun Miller and photography by Brittany Matyas.

It is possible that Jon Brion is the most famous artist you’ve heard but never heard of. His productions, songs and scores have been unavoidable over the past 25 years yet he is still somewhat invisible to the world. It’s hard to know where to start when summing up this genius. Yes, genius is a word that gets falsely banded around but this guy is truly a gift and for that reason we felt an urge to shine a spotlight on his work with artists from around the world covering his songs.

Where to begin…

Firstly, describing best what role Jon plays in the world of music is tricky. He is perhaps best known as a film score composer with his best loved works being Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Punch-Drunk Love, I Heart Huckabees and more recently Lady Bird. As a producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist he has worked with artists as varied as Kanye West, Elliott Smith, Frank Ocean, Best Coast, Fiona Apple, Aimee Mann, Evan Dando, Beyonce and the late Mac Miller. Often shying away from the limelight he is very much the guy behind the guy. Despite being the creative force on some of the biggest records of the last decade he is unrecognised in the street, unassuming and humble. A sound guru with an arsenal of obscure vintage gear and limitless ideas, regardless of genre or project he is the man you call when you want to escape the refines of your musical box. In summary he kinda IS music.

Super Fan is extremely proud to present ‘Music by Jon Brion’ The album is a collection of covers from artists across the globe largely focusing on his film scores and self-released, under-appreciated solo record ‘Meaningless’. The record features 12 of his finest compositions and goes some way to paint a picture of his melodic brilliance which at times straddles Gershwin, Brian Wilson and The Beatles. The magic of his music to us communicates a sense of reflective world weariness which is something we can all relate to in 2020. Uncle Luc returns with a stripped back album made using equipment from the 1960s and 70s. It wasn’t a record that he’d planned but when the virus hit Luke moved from London to the countryside to help out his parents. While there he discovered his fathers collection of old recording equipment. It had been untested in decades but unbelievably all worked so he hit record and began.

The recordings centre around an old Revox 2 track tape machine, Luke’s trusty 1965 Gibson LG-0 acoustic and a 70s Fender Rhodes piano. Luke explains more…

“The concept of the album was to trap the songs as soon as they were written, to not overthink them and not over complicate them with lots of instrument overdubs.”

“It’s easy with digital recording to re-do and endlessly tinker, eventually you can drain the life out of a song. Working on an old tape machine limits you so you have to be more decisive and definite.The title ‘Simple Songs For Today’ came before I even wrote the first song and was something of a mission statement for the type of album I wanted to make. Minimal takes, minimal instruments, simple songs”

The album is something of a collage with spoken word tracks, dreamy surf instrumentals, field recordings and also the typical shiny acoustic pop tunes Luke is known for. Self described as a “miniature album” it covers a lot of textural ground inside it’s 7 songs and is released digitally via Super Fan 99 on 31.07.20. Written and produced by Luke Barham. Sleeve design by award winning illustrator Nicholas Stevenson.
