We are very excited to introduce you to Los Angelenos 'The Entire Universe' whose new double A side single 'Just Don't/Can They Hear?' will be released on square picture disc vinyl next month.

As you'd imagine from a Super Fan signing they are a band who paint songs in brilliant technicolor, rich in melody, reflective yet hopeful. We were quickly endeared by their warm tape sound, widescreen arrangements and yearning vocals. Wipe away the California desert dust and there's a definite underlying nod to the British psych sound of the late 60s.

The band was formed by Jeffertitti Moon who had previously worked closely with Father John Misty and cult LA band Corners. With a handful of new songs written and recorded he set about finding the right musicians who would not only compliment the songs but translate them to a live setting. A series of residencies in both Los Angeles and New York followed complimented by a string of singles and Super Fan are very pleased to be releasing their latest.

'Can They Hear?' gives a taste of what to expect on the flip side of this release. Look out for a premier of 'Just Don't' next week and expect the debut full length later this spring with European dates TBC.

Rooftop Gardens transports us to a time of 8-track players, flared jeans, AM Radio and Creem magazine. The perfect backdrop to a lazy 70s California afternoon daydreaming of your high school crush. In fact, lead track ‘Circles’ wouldn’t feel at all out of place sound tracking Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused. Swirling guitar parts bring to mind Chris Bell Big Star while the forlorn vocal could be Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub making this a must for all power-pop fans. 

Originally from the Bay Area, Peter Maffei AKA Rooftop Gardens now lives in LA. As a gun for hire he has lent his guitar talents to Sugar Candy Mountain, Pearl Charles and The Blank Tapes among others. He currently plays in Cosmo Gold and is the USA half of transatlantic duo Born Fighters. 

Circles is backed by the equally heartfelt ‘Never Let Me Go’ which features a slide line straight out of George Harrisons pocket. Rooftop Gardens sits comfortably with the Super Fan back catalogue and we can’t wait to hear more later this year. The single is released digitally worldwide on 28.02.20.

Luke is from London and Peter is from California. Not so long ago the pair were strangers but through a shared love of 70s music, vintage guitars and their pets (Denny the cat and George the dog respectively) the universe brought them together in 2019. The two quickly became best of mates making light work of the 5000 miles that separated them. They describe the project as a “transatlantic power pop postal service” sending demos back and forth over the net and chipping away at song ideas from a distance. As you can imagine, organising a band practice is a little different than for most bands but not to be deterred they return this month with a follow up to debut ‘Little Green Tree’ titled ‘Shadow’. Lead vocal duties are shared on this bittersweet kicker which ruminates on the idea of trying to reclaim one’s identity post break-up. 

Who knows if an album will ever materialise but for now the project is something of an open book/sweet left hook which the two plan to work on whenever in the same country whether that be England or the USA. 

The somewhat ironically named band are Peter Maffei and Luke Barham. Mike Deluccia once again joins on drums and the session was engineered and mixed by Neil Wogensen in Highland Park, L.A. Art as always by the ace Shaun Miller and photography by Brittany Matyas.

It is possible that Jon Brion is the most famous artist you’ve heard but never heard of. His productions, songs and scores have been unavoidable over the past 25 years yet he is still somewhat invisible to the world. It’s hard to know where to start when summing up this genius. Yes, genius is a word that gets falsely banded around but this guy is truly a gift and for that reason we felt an urge to shine a spotlight on his work with artists from around the world covering his songs.

Where to begin…

Firstly, describing best what role Jon plays in the world of music is tricky. He is perhaps best known as a film score composer with his best loved works being Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Punch-Drunk Love, I Heart Huckabees and more recently Lady Bird. As a producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist he has worked with artists as varied as Kanye West, Elliott Smith, Frank Ocean, Best Coast, Fiona Apple, Aimee Mann, Evan Dando, Beyonce and the late Mac Miller. Often shying away from the limelight he is very much the guy behind the guy. Despite being the creative force on some of the biggest records of the last decade he is unrecognised in the street, unassuming and humble. A sound guru with an arsenal of obscure vintage gear and limitless ideas, regardless of genre or project he is the man you call when you want to escape the refines of your musical box. In summary he kinda IS music.

Super Fan is extremely proud to present ‘Music by Jon Brion’ The album is a collection of covers from artists across the globe largely focusing on his film scores and self-released, under-appreciated solo record ‘Meaningless’. The record features 12 of his finest compositions and goes some way to paint a picture of his melodic brilliance which at times straddles Gershwin, Brian Wilson and The Beatles. The magic of his music to us communicates a sense of reflective world weariness which is something we can all relate to in 2020.
