After the traditional dance music label summer break, Superfreq returns with a release that will truly make this an Indian Summer to remember, which comes from the long defunct but enduringly admired partnership in the form of House Of 909. The brainchild of Affie Yusuf, House Of 909 started out as a house label in the mid 90s after which Affie teamed up with Trevor Loveys to form a music partnership of the same name. The pair have not released music since 2004 but before that time were home on labels Expanded Soul & Alola with the bulk of their music, including the seminal album The Children We Were being released on the iconic tech house label Pagen Records. Back to 2013 & Superfreq bosses Mr.C & David Scuba have managed to scoop up this fantastic new single Chant & have delivered their own unique interpretations in the process.First up is the original raw mix of Chant. Its a woozy & lo slung deep tech house number with tribal-esque percussion & soothing vocal chants that imbue the whole thing with African spirit. Lively synths squirm about at various intervals as this uplifting track locks dancefloors into one deep groove & keeps them there for the duration.The House Of 909s cooked mix strips the original back a little, adding subtle synth sounds, a little extra propulsion to the beats & generally freewheels & unhinges itself that little bit more as things progress with a more finely polished production angle.Mr.C then takes his interpretation from Chicago as he delivers a taught jacking bassline over 808 drums, adding old school type melodies, yet keeping the uplifting & hypnotic nature of the original intact, to come up with this disco tinged rework as the rigid groove continues unhindered below.Finally, its the ever more impressive David Scuba who turns in the final remix. He strips out some of the percussion and lays down a deep and wavy bassline that sways and swaggers with real charisma. The originals vocals become smeared with stretched echoes and bring a sense of eeriness to the track without ever losing a keen sense of rhythm.This is another fine bit of A&Ring from Superfreq and one that reminds us just how great the House of 909 project really was. As ever, with the Superfreq family supplying the remixes makes this another essential EP from the Superfreq stable.

Almost a year after the release of Peter Van Hoesen’s highly acclaimed album 'Perceiver' on his Time to Express imprint, the Belgian producer returns with ‘Life Performance' - a brand new live recording which was captured into a single, long- form listening experience during a specially curated Time to Express label night at Tresor on July 19, 2013.

Coming in October on Berlin's techno institute and record label, Tresor, this new live album represents an important step forward for the producer. Since 2006, Peter has played live in a variety of different settings and situations, from festival circuits and dark, sweaty venues to working with dance and theater companies on stage. Each live performance brought with it a necessary evolution in approach, which led to a varying sense of real ‘live’ interaction. At first, with a setup centered around a laptop, a drum machine was added, then slowly more and more machines entered into proceedings. 

Ultimately though, it was the computer that was to hold central guard in the coordination of each disparate sonic element.

Now, the laptop is being pushed aside, making way for the hardware to be brought fully to the fore, allowing for greater artistic freedom and expression. The focus is to be placed upon live improvisation in the creation of something wholly unique and ever-evolving. Sculpting this sound in real-time, allowing for the exploration of a multitude of possibilities and contorting parameters, in essence, a child-like approach to the idea of ‘playing’, of not being limited by the world around, is what drove this project forward. As Peter explains,

“Making the tracks with the setup in mind as opposed to transposing tracks made in the studio into a live setting is much easier, and much more fun. You can improvise with it freely - and for me that [improvisation] was most important - then decide, in that specific moment, about its tonality and its synthesis. I’m a big fan of synthesis. I don’t work with samples often. If you use samples, there’s no way to really sculpt them - not just from a technical perspective, but also from an artist viewpoint. There’s a freshness and directness you get from being able to interact with the music and audience on a much deeper level than normal.”

Over the course of sixty minutes, the listener is exposed to a broad palette of sounds and patterns. Textural shifts, gentle rhythmic blends, dynamic synths, hooks and arpeggios coagulate into an exceptional aural experience, exemplifying an approach to music production in a live context that is both personal and unique.
