'To Be Alone' has been plucked from the acclaimed 'Ladies and Mentalmen' LP for a series of remixes in this new release on NY-based stalwart Nurvous Records, showcasing Australian production powerhouses Yolanda Be Cool in a light to which some may not yet be accustomed.

A moment of calm amidst the dancefloor onslaught of Yolanda Be Cool's recent LP, the original of To Be Alone is something of a slow burner; oozing chill-out vibes and hinting more towards the afterparty. Nevertheless, one senses that the emotive vocals running through the track could lend themselves to something more upbeat and it's with this in mind that Yolanda's own refix announces itself with faster-paced beats, clubby bass notes and some Old Skool rave stabs to finish the job off. 

If this is where the euphoria's at, then look no further than the Critical Mess remix for an altogether darker, more brooding take; Omar's soulful vocals are used sparingly this time round, turning the original on its head and creating a sexy sense of minimalism over the mean bassline workout. The female vocal top line really shines in this version. 

Elsewhere, up and coming US-based producer Urulu wastes little time in stamping his evocative and atmospheric trademarks all over his remix. Crisp Future Garage beats dance playfully over a lush new ambience, vocals taking a back seat as the tune washes over the listener. 

For the final remix, G-Swing originator James Curd takes control. Here, Electro-tinged synths fuse with funky guitar licks and feel-good Disco vibes and while the lyrical melancholia remains, the track instead becomes something beautifully uplifting.

Originally released to widespread acclaim in May last year, the sun-blissed grooves and melodies of ‘Missing You’ are back for 2014 with a brace of new mixes and set for release on both digital and vinyl formats over the coming weeks.



On the A-side of this new package is something rather special. Extra Dry originally approached Frankie Knuckles and Eric Kupper to produce a Director’s Cut remix on this record early in 2014. In his own words Eric Kupper explains how the mix came about…



“I have been regularly playing the original version of this amazingly beautiful record since I first received it last year and I was originally scheduled to do this mix with my musical partner-in-crime, Frankie Knuckles. After his untimely passing, I still really wanted to remix this record – in the Director’s Cut style we had carefully honed over the years – with his guidance from above. “And I’m Still Missing Him”…forever. It is with real honor and respect that we present Eric Kupper’s ‘Director’s Cut Tribute To FK’ Mix on this release.

Leading up the B-side are Nineteen96. Fresh from a recent release on Strictly Rhythm, the Nineteen96 boys deliver a mix that take ‘Missing You’ in a really fresh direction. The digital package is completed by the two mixes from Artful and Ridney themselves while the vinyl release feature the exclusive ‘Vinyl-a-pella’.



This release on ‘Missing You’  will be available exclusively on Traxsource from Monday 21st July with a full digital release following on Monday 18th August. The Teenage DJ project was something that organically came together from the time I initially started using a computer at home, around the end of the 90’s. It developed out of the sketch ideas I was doing at the time in order to learn how to master the basics of the music programs I wanted to work with, particularly Acid. Before I knew it there were a dozen or so of these sketches, and the idea of a project began to form. Over the next couple of years the amount of sketches would grow to around 30 or so, at which point, in 2003, I put the project on the backburner while I directed my energies into setting up www.electrofunkroots.co.uk , before returning to the clubs at the end of the year, where I began to play some of the more dance-based TDJ grooves I’d put together, like ‘Glorious’, ‘Time And Place (Disco Break)’ and, most notably, ‘I Was A Teenage DJ Pt 1’, built around the intro of KC & The Sunshine Band’s 1977 single ‘I’m Your Boogie Man’, which dated right back to when I actually was a teenage DJ, back in my Merseyside hometown of New Brighton.

The response to them was so positive that, in 2005, I decided to press up a four track 12”, which I called ‘Teenage DJ Disco Best’ (borrowing its title, and the ‘Disco’ logo from a promo I received back in 1978 called ‘Kraftwerk’s Disco Best’).Given that all the TDJ tracks were quite short I decided to extend ‘I Was A Teenage DJ Pt 1’, creating a reprise and adding a couple more minutes for the dancefloor.

This would turn out to be something of a landmark track for me, becoming an underground favourite, most rewardingly on a personal level in New York. At this point all my bookings were still in the UK, but, with the first volume of Credit To The Edit imminent things began to shift up a gear for me, with Groove Magazine in Germany bringing me over to Berlin for my European return (I’d last played abroad at Mülheim in Germany in 1980, for the two months immediately before I landed my Wigan Pier residency).

Thanks to DJ's Rub N Tug and nights like No Ordinary Monkey, the track took off on the New York underground preceding my debut there following the release of the first Credit To The Edit album in 2005.

The ‘Teenage DJ Disco Best’ 12” would become a DJ favourite far and wide, both at this early point and later via subsequent re-pressings, all four tracks picking up plenty of plays. In 2008 ‘I Was A Teenage DJ Pt 1’ would re-emerge, having been pressed up back to back with another landmark tune for me, my Imagination / Missy Elliot mash-up, ‘Gotta Keep Workin’ It’, for the first Reactivate 12”. It’s something I’ll always return to from time to time, given its special place in my DJ heart – it’s the groove that keeps on giving.

The closing track on the ‘Teenage DJ Disco Best’ 12”, again put together in the period prior to my DJ comeback. Started out with the working title ‘Love Lost’, short hand for the source track and a big personal favourite, ‘The Love I Lost’ by Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes. 

I’m just working a series of loops, whilst running some straight 4/4 disco beats underneath. I pitched it up quite fast as it seemed to work best this way. The whole thing is geared towards the breakdown, or more specifically the re-entry of the drums, this time a section of 60’s Motown beats, the contrast giving the track a completely different dynamic before it reverts to its former flavour for the final furlong.

Revered live duo act Channel X showcase their acuminated production skills with their latest output. Aptly entitled 'X', the new EP marks a decade of the Berliners leaving their mark on the tech house scene. Opening track 'Out of control' draws you in immediately with its metallic percussion subdued by grave synths and deep horns, while the whispered, almost non-existent vocal sample adds to its overall deep and dark aesthetic. With its rolling bass-line ,"Refugia” seems to be the perfect club follow-up to ease the built-up rhythmic tension, while the Australian artist Uone gives the track an even lighter, energetic makeover. Despite its name, "Glowing" takes us on a dungeon ride by means of heavy hitting percussion, whilst Audiojack pump it with a dose of high-pitched fidgety synths for their killer remix.

This was the lead track from the second TDJ 12”, ‘More From The Teenage Disco Vaults’. It was included on the ‘First Time In NYC @ APT’ mix, from back in 2005, which I uploaded here as exclusive content last week. Like all the Teenage DJ tracks it’s built around combinations of loops, in this case the three main ingredients are taken from three different decades – Dusty Springfield from the 60’s, Instant Funk from the 70’s and Yello from the 80’s.

Over the past few years, the Berlin based artist KlangKuenstler came stomping into the tech-house scene with such impact that everyone was forced to stand up and take notice. With a string of Top 10 hits and releases on coveted labels like Toolroom, Mother Recordings and Elrow, the German producer and DJ has quickly risen through the ranks to become one of the de jure artists at the top of his genre. As such, we thought it only right to bring him into the fold of Deeperfect for his next banging release!
Klangkuenstler brings his instantly recognisable aesthetic to Dance With Me and delivers a full power tech-house monster. His heavy jacking drum groove sets the pace and gets things off to a heaving start before a deep, pulsing sub joins in to support the energetic rhythm. Some dark techno open hats keep the mood focused and provide contrast against the hooky, soulful female vocal. Sparse synth stabs and restrained effects are used to punctuate at just the right moments and help the track to flow effortlessly from beginning to end.
Up on remix duty is Raffa FL who has been killing the game over the past few years with stand out releases on Avorte, Material, Criminal Hype and many more influential labels. While he keeps things tech-house and pushing, Raffa FL brings his own distinct flavour to the remix with edgier drums than the original and a deep and banging bassline. By using the vocal hook sparingly and introducing some intense bass stabs he is able to create a tension building roller coaster of sound that will be right at home in peak time sets across the globe.

Beantown’s best homegrown music compilation, DOTC “A BOSTON ELECTRONIC MUSIC STORY,"  is back for the 5th year running.  Created by Soul Clap specifically to shine a spotlight on our beloved hometown and serve as a platform for the ever-growing number of rising local talent.  This annual series keeps us connected to our roots and to the beloved Dancing On The Charles event series we started more than a decade ago (can you believe it?) along with longtime friends and fellow DJs Randy Deshaies and Sergio Santos. 

This year's curation of artists celebrates the return of veterans while welcoming some new names but certainly not new talents to the compilation.  Camino 84  drops that bass line driven New-Disco-Dub-Funk on “Disconnected”, then check out the vintage craftsmanship from sample selector David Paglia  on “Say With Me”.  Legends  Kelvin Sylvester & Lee Wilson  bring us that house heat with “When The Beat Drops."  Self-described dip-shit duo  Juice Belushi  assembled a real throwback work-out called “The Detes”.  Nick Minieri’s “ Heat Index” is a percussive analog stomper and Roldy Cezaire  continues to blow our minds as a master songwriter, vibe magician and overall stand out talent.  This year Roldy teams up with Monolog and Atsushi Asada on their future-facing “Crazy Kind Of Love”.  Then flashback to the past with her feet in the present as Saucy Lady drops her modern funk on “It’s All Here”.  Compilation returnee  Suspence  joins forces with  Nick Thrine  and  Finley  on “Liquid” and Trip Report  reaches for the acid on “I’ve Got It (If You Want It).  Finally,  Wigzen & Alina thrill us with “Asita” featuring beautiful atmospheric pads, percussive synth bass and live strings taking this track over the top! 

In celebration of this years compilation we (Soul Clap) will be headed back home to Boston (well actually Cambridge) on Saturday, July 21st 2018 to perform at Dancing On The Charles.  If you’re in town do not miss this wonderful moment, we’d love to see each and everyone one of you!
