Gilbert's Effect

For this album, photographs by Thomas Lutz illustrate a narrative that is recounted with my music. A person - let’s call them „She“ - who leaves her parent’s house to lead an independent life. But then for whatever circumstances, she faces the danger of homelessness.

„She’s Leaving“, the title track, is inspired by an experience at age 17, when I left my parent’s house and carried a box of my things on foot to my new home. On my 38th birthday - the day my grandmother died - I wrote this piano piece.

„Variation I“ features a modified piano with sound built in the granular synthesizer. In „Variation II“ and „III“ this process is continued with addition of instruments and spatial effects.

„Night Tube“ is both a further variation and a reminiscence of „Waking the Witch“ by Kate Bush. Taken from the second side of her „Hounds Of Love“ LP, the concept piece „The Ninth Wave“ tells the story of a girl floating alone on the sea in a life raft. Voices of her family in her fantasy awaken her again and again, saving her from falling asleep, freezing to death and drowning.
In „Night Tube“ I think of a homeless person who nods off in the London subway at night and is startled, again and again, by inner and outer voices. In the metaphorical sense, it’s also about being scared awake in one’s own circumstances. There are currently an estimated 59,000 homeless women in Germany.

„Without A Sound“ closes the album. With this remix of the piano piece „She’s Leaving“ I tried to capture some of the emptiness and quiet vastness of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s music („async“). The trumpet samples come from a nocturnal jam session in the recording studio of the Stuttgart Musikhochschule in which I was involved.

With the additional „Threads of Reflections“ remix*, Belial Pelegrim contributes a unique cinematic soundscape with a generous and gentle atmosphere.

Qrauer are a German electronic duo made up of Christian Grochau, a virtuosic percus- sionist, producer and remix artist and Ludwig Bauer, a deft pianist, multi-instrumenta- list, and composer. "The Boat" is a minimalist yet emotionally resonant techno track that drifts between introspection and movement — like a vessel caught between tides of memory and forward momentum. The piece begins with sparse, ambient textures resembling distant waves, accompanied by soft mechanical pulses that slowly evolve into a steady, fluid rhythm.

Pierre (Bob) Stephan uses restraint to great effect here: each sonic element feels deliberate and spacious, allowing the listener to float within the track’s subtle dynamics. The melodic fragments are gently melancholic, echoing the feeling of isolation or perhaps a quiet determination. As the composition unfolds, deeper basslines and filtered synth layers emerge like currents beneath the surface, guiding the track without overwhelming it.

"The Boat" could be interpreted as a metaphor — a journey across uncertain waters, a meditation on solitude, or a quiet rebellion against the noise of the world. It’s understated but powerful, balancing fragility with propulsion. Ideal for late-night reflections or immersive listening, this track reaffirms Stephan’s ability to create techno that breathes with emotional depth.

Music is such a great thing. It gives me so much and is  a big part of my life. I love to dig around chasing those classic tunes that you find sometimes, I love to share music and I truly love making music. 

I started using Fruity Loops many years ago and I just loved it - still do. I try to make some music or art every day. If you like that as an idea, and you like some of the things I do - great. That makes me happy.

In the 80's I became interested in club culture. As a teen I was involved in running a youth club and arranged monthly disco nights that ended with slow dances. After some years dancing at regular clubs I went on an adventure to a night I had been hearing about. A night for the weird people. At that techno event I felt free, at home and I felt that I had found something I wanted to be part of for the rest of my life. 

After being stuck at home because of severe illness I found time and focus to start making my own music and art. In some ways my illness brought this gift as a side effect. If you struggle with illness I feel for you. That shit sucks. 

I believe in art, science, DIY and positivity. 

Music and art are my favorite puzzles :)
