In the state of multiplicity, we will find Loveskills. This one-man industry of music, Richard Spitzer, discovers himself through the craft of songwriting and producing textures of therapeutic synth, low frequency bass, and a balance of melodic heart speak. While new love kills the desire to surrender, ambitious heartbreak sets the stage. Loveskills comes in waves, different perspectives from the same vantage point in the heart of the city.

Ambient R&B and post-dubstep have been some of the terms people are using to describe the newsest project of this NYC-born producer. A musical visionary and creator of several EDM and indietronica acts in Brooklyn over the last few years, Spitzer has released music as Nite Club (CMJ top 20 Electronic), Vinyl Life, and Little Star Dweller with his release on Pictureplane‘s most recent remix album. With the live addition of thuggish eloquence from Harlem raised rapper Alex Falk and drummer Steve Bryant, Loveskills dances between sensuality and meticulous synth-scapes layered with shoegazed vocals that sound like angels dancing in your ears. If Drake and Tangerine Dream had a blissed out romantic escapade – it would sound like this.

Born into an Orthodox Jewish / Cuban family, music was a natural part of daily life for young Spitzer, either at salsa parties or introspective prayer at the ultra-Orthodox Hebrew Temple. Diversity in music was Spitzer’s calling since he was little. Spitzer started performing at rave events at 16 years old. He blossomed as a keyboard player with prog-rock, punk and live drum n’ bass groups, using modern classical composition as his backdrop.

He then pursued a music education at SUNY where he was a composition classmate with Phillip Glass, electronic artist Dan Deacon and singer Regina Spektor. Ever since, he’s been relentlessly honing his skills at production and has found time to perform across the US, Europe and Japan along side artists like The Rapture, The Roots, Jamie Lidell, Drop The Lime, Drake, Teengirl Fantasy, Brazilian Girls, and many more.

“All This Time” is the 3rd full length LP from Terror Bird - aka Nikki Nevver - and is by far the most personal, emotionally affecting and musically developed. Recorded at home over a period of 5 months, the 10 songs on “All This Time” document a period of intense emotional upheaval, a period wherein Nevver underwent major shifts in her personal life, rediscovered the solo recording process (previous albums having used live drumming and studio production) and married a raw, personal music with a straight-to-tape aesthetic most in-tune with her early recording experiences. The difference this time is that Nevver’s unique voice - at turns operatic and fragile, untutored and wearing its heart on its sleeve - serves as the perfect conduit for the emotional turmoil in the songs.

Nevver’s voice has grown into a formidable instrument, a towering, unabashed vocal whose resonance curls around the synth and drum machine production, at times duetting with itself, at times scaling the vocal register to reach new dramatic heights. Brought up on the music of the 80s “studio” - The Smiths, Kate Bush, The Cure - Nevver’s music exists beyond modern zeitgeists or considerations, subverting “big production” music into a personal DIY aesthetic. It’s a pure songwriting that outgrows genre and thrives purely on the merits of direct communication between songwriter and listener. 

Each song on “All This Time” serves as a chapter in a narrative that is universal; from the self-doubt and loneliness of opener “The Wrong Way,” to the doomed bedroom romance of “Try To Break Me,” from the masochistic guilt of “Locket” to the near-anthemic “Lust & Violence.” Each song speaks directly, plainly, to the listener, dispensing as much as possible with the unnecessary augmentation of modern pop music; “All This Time” is simply the deeply romantic, part-doomed / part-hopeful songs of a singular, unique talent.
