In the second installment in a series of fresh releases dealing with detoxing masculinity, ASA 808 presents two pieces of sweeping UK-bass and ambient influenced dance music. Driven by their distinctive harmonic take on house music and impelling breakbeats, Healing and Fill your lungs with peace boldly merge these contrasting elements while upholding ASA 808’s recognisable boundary-pushing sound. They will be released on the TOYS Berlin imprint on Friday, July 29th 2022.

Healing is swirling with energetic hi-hats, rousing drum beats and dreamy harp and bell sounds piercing through the stirring surface of harmonically multi-layered synths and beautifully scattered vocal bits. Apparent opposites like the driving breaky kick drum clash with gentle but clear harp melodies, constantly being recontextualized by surprising harmonic shifts and rhodes basslines, evolving the track to an energizing yet refreshing and mind-bending piece of dance music.

Healing starts with listening. It continues with rest and attention. It will always happen if we let it. Healing the inflammations of hate, aggression, racism, sexism and greed requires education, accountability, reflection, mindfulness, self-reflectiveness, solidarity and non-violence, the recognition and rejection of privilege. It is not just the inner process of an individual, but often a collective act. There’s so much we need to heal: harm caused by unprocessed grief, inherited, collective and individual trauma, our relationship with nature, with ourselves and our bodies.

Fill your lungs with peace is a tribute to Thích Nhất Hạnh, the great Zen-Buddhist monk and teacher, who passed away earlier this year. It’s a reminder to get in touch with the here and now. An invitation to pause whatever you’re doing in order to experience the wonders of the present moment. It’s a real treasure to realize: We have a chance to start anew anytime, any second. It’s as easy as that, you can always start with your next inhale.

The harp and drum sounds create a bond between Healing and Fill your lungs with peace. Nonetheless the latter is a faster, yet calmer and more analogue take on breakbeat. Once you dive into it, you can almost feel how soothing and refreshing the immeasurable delays, guitar fades and floating synth arpeggios fill the air.

Healing comes from within, no one and nothing else can provide it. ASA 808’s new pieces remind us of exactly that – while honoring and spreading the message of one of the wisest beings that lived on this earth, who authentically explained a way to sustainable happiness.

The room was crowded, it was set to be a warm evening and as he stood outside the doors he began to shake with nerves as the sound echoed and danced down the corridor. It had been a long time since he'd last been here, for so long this realm had seemed beyond his kind.

Now, he was free to be himself, to dance as himself, to move as himself. Never had he imagined it might go quite like this, with butterflies in his stomach and a nervous shiver which radiated and vibrated down his spine.

He hoped that he would be welcomed, he wanted to be welcome. If this was to be his world now, he'd need that.

Ian Blevins is a prolific figurehead of the modern, experimental house sound having released on the likes of ESP Institute, Futureboogie and Not An Animal. He is remixed on a new EP for Just Jack by longstanding London pioneers Secretsundaze in a fiery, dancefloor approved style.

Guided by the belief that the smallest sounds often make the biggest noise, Frame/Frame plumbs the natural soundscape for his debut album, ‘Driftwood’, a carefully crafted distillation of his own experiences and experiments with electronic music and beyond.

There is beauty to be found even in the prosaic— creaking oars form the undulating rhythm of the title track, the bassline on ‘3 am at Magfields’ is a rasping door, a whistle recorded in the bathroom becomes a compelling hook in ‘U.N.I.’, while kitchen utensils sup- ply the rousing percussion in ‘High Ceilings’.

‘Driftwood’ is an invitation to move, to breathe, to smile, to see the world with the clarity that only a 4 am dance-floor epiphany can provide.

PREMIERE : Frame/Frame - Fortunately

Eccentric Japanese producer, boys be kko, is known for his larger-than-life persona. Whether it be within the artwork that accompanies his music, or during his hardware only live performances in Tokyo, he consistently keeps his fans on their toes by delivering the unexpected. The artists upcoming 'Monnaka' EP is set for release on September 9th via Labyrinth Records, and 'Nether Portal' offers a unique glimpse of what's to come. 

Throughout the EP, the artist presents his unique take on deep house, in a distinctly left-field manner. Merging the uniquely eastern electronic sounds of his homeland alongside contemporary European rave sounds, the result is addictive and born for the dancefloor. ‘Monnaka’, the EP’s title track showcases kko’s ability to take listeners on a sonic journey. An ethereal ambience coincides with a relentless groove that sees a thumping bassline, glitching synths and a boisterous cowbell make for a truly versatile listening experience.  

Whilst both ‘Elder Garden’ and ‘Nether Portal’ deliver a dose of peak time energy that illustrates the harder side to the artist’s output. Taking inspiration from his favourite game in Minecraft, kko presents dance music with a cinematic twist. Undoubtedly hypnotic in their design, they have the power to whip the dance floor into a frenzy with their transcendental quality. ‘Elder Garden’ and ‘Nether Portal’ interprets kko’s vision of euphoria and we’re sure it’s going to have quite the impact.
