Among the terms that lie at the core of our shared lexicon as music lovers, “discovery” might be one of the most fundamental in expressing the drive behind each and every one of our efforts. It may seem simple, but it is a complex notion that involves many actions and sensations, from learning things and taking risks to finding rewards and building knowledge. Discovering is a quintessential part of our collective identity, a unique way of being and feeling, since unveiling parts of reality that were hidden from us is both a way of creating ourselves and the world around us.

So, when this talented discoverer of musical artifacts decided to use the Ancient Greek word for it as his moniker, he wasn’t just trying to name himself but mainly to come up with a precise definition for what he is and does as an artist.

Thus, Anacalypto can be many things at once, the main one being exactly what guides every single one of his initiatives and animates relentless dancing journeys: that perennial sense of wonder that tapping into the unknown brings into our lives.

"When disco crashed and the recording industry rejected dance music in the United States, the party didn’t stop, it just moved to a cheaper neighbourhood. The drummers mostly got laid off, the big recording studios started to close and the sound of disco changed completely. No more string sections, no big budgets. In its place came the sound that pre-dated house music: electronic disco (in Europe, a lot of it got another new name: Italo-disco). This mix is the sound of those records. All but two were made in north America, the others in the UK. It’s what happened when soul and disco met synthesisers and drum machines and it still sounds great today. Enjoy."

Bill Brewster is a record collector, DJ, promoter and music writer and consultant. Along with Frank Broughton, he’s responsible for books like Last Night A DJ Saved My Life and How To DJ (Properly), the pair also responsible for the legendary party Low Life, which closed in 2015 after 20 years of fun. As a DJ, Bill is a former Fabric resident who now plays all over the word. He’s also the patron saint of lost causes and in the spirit of that supports Grimsby Town.

GOURANGA MIXTAPE:  Bill Brewster's Electric Eighties Mix

Here is a live DJ set I streamed to Facebook Live on April 30, 2020. It's basically the result of a crate-digging expedition for mostly-forgotten disco tracks which saw me foraging through mountains of record boxes, and managing to laboriously unearth special musical treasures that I can share with you. 

While a few familiar tunes are sprinkled throughout, at this time it's been decided that (unlike my other uploads) no track listing will be published. These here are not too difficult to guess yet, they may get progressively harder in future editions of the 'Disco Nuggets' series which have officially started with this mix.

Hope you enjoy listening through these and discovering what they are as much as I did hunting for those goodies after hours of musical archeology.
