For nearly a decade, Tycho has been known as the musical alias of Scott Hansen, but with the release of Awake – his second LP for Ghostly International – the solo project has evolved into a three-piece band. Relating closer to post-rock than ambient soundscapes, the record is situated in the present, sounding more like Hansen than drawing from his influences. “This is, in many ways, the first true Tycho record.”

Following 2011’s Dive LP, the San Francisco-based designer toured extensively, and with a full band on stage, his sound coalesced into a percussive, organic whole. Zac Brown (guitars, bass) rejoined Scott on the road for this tour, but it was the particular addition of Rory O’Connor’s live drumming that ultimately sent Hansen back to the studio with a more precise vision. “After the tour, I decided that I wanted to capture the more energetic, driven sound of the live show on the next album,” Hansen recalls. Bringing musicians into Tycho’s creative process was a step towards expanding his own songwriting and advancing the project beyond its current sound.

In a cabin near Tahoe last winter, Zac and Scott began fleshing out the structure of the new record, but it wasn’t until they set up shop in the hills of Santa Cruz with Rory that it all fell into place. “It crystallized the vision of how the drums would come to the forefront on this record,” says Hansen. The sound was much more stripped-down and concise with more organic instruments in the fold. Songs like “Montana” and “Awake” are a departure from Tycho’s previous material – unique to the group effort poured into the songs on the new record – while “See” and “Dye” echo ideas from previous works, bridging a middle ground between the old and new. Working with Count Eldridge, who also engineered Dive, the team could fixate on the pulses that Tycho might previously layer under synthesizers and exhume them with distinct bass and guitar patterns.

Also known for his design work as ISO50, Hansen’s visual and sonic efforts have dovetailed throughout the course of his career. “This is the first time in my life I've dropped everything to focus on one artistic pursuit,” notes Hansen. Previous Tycho releases came to fruition when an amalgam of songs were nearing completion, but Awake is where music becomes the focus and true expression becomes the result.

Since their 2004 debut, True Nature Unfolds, Callisto have sought out new ground in the post-metal genre. Their 2006 album Noir took the quintet's sound to cinematic proportions, and 2009's Providence further developed the combo's original approach.
 
Now, Callisto have returned after five years of relatively quiet existence with a new album for Svart Records, entitled Secret Youth. Having gone through some minor lineup changes, the band's new digital single "Backbone" was released in November. Never wanting to record the same album twice and always eager to experiment, the band members themselves describe the new material as “progressive noise rock” - a contradictory concoction of easier, more straightforward elements in the same melting pot with a youthful, experimental spirit.
 
Callisto's Secret Youth will hit the shops on January 30th, 2015 on CD, vinyl, and digital. Celebrating the new album, the band will first perform selected dates around Finland and is then going to embark on an extensive European tour in the spring of 2015.

Chicago's esteemed instrumental quartet Pelican are set to release a new EP on Southern Lord in the new year based around fresh reimaginings of 'The Cliff', a highlight from their most recent album, 2013's Forever Becoming, and one recently completed new song. Due out February 24 on 12” vinyl and digital formats, the four track EP includes remixes from Justin Broadrick (of Godflesh, Jesu), Aaron Harris and Bryant Clifford Meyer of ISIS/Palms, and, for only the second time in their fourteen year career, vocals.
 
Allen Epley (Shiner, The Life and Times) once again returns to the band’s fold to transform, in a complementary manner, the concept and overall outcome of what we have come to know as Pelican. No cheap juxtaposition, Epley’s seasoned voice is as broad and astonishingly capable on “The Cliff” as the members behind the music, a claim those who have listened to Epley’s contribution on “Final Breath” from 2009’s What We All Come To Need will attest to. Elsewhere on the record, Justin Broadrick and AH/BCM turn in fresh takes of the source material, feeling less like remixes than new compositions reworked from the original source. Rounding out the set is the previously unreleased song “The Wait”, a contemplative semi-acoustic simmer that builds to an explosion of cathartic distortion and melody in true Pelican fashion.

These ten tracks stand up as their most cohesive work, brutally combining the heritage of Holy Terror/H8000 inspired-hardcore with devastating sludge and black metal savagery.

Carrying a deep, oppressive urban coldness behind their spectacularly crushing wall of sound, the level of aggressivity spilled on «Rise To Infamy» is hard to endure. Everything has been managed to inflict maximum aural damage; once again recorded by Francis Caste at Sainte Marthe Studio in fall 2014, the band's monstrous tones sounds colder and more massive than ever. This is nothing but a monument of down-to-earth, unvarnished violence, punishing from start to finish.

Le temps qui passe ne les rendant que plus forts, le groupe revient avec leur 2nd album "Rise To Infamy". Ces dix titres se révélants être leurs plus cohérents, combinant sans vergogne un héritage inspiré Holy Terror/H8000 avec la sauvagerie du black metal et du sludge.

Avec sa charge profondément urbaine, froide et oppressive, derrière un mur de son dévastateur, le niveau d'agressivité dégagé sur "Rise To Infamy" est difficilement supportable. Tout a été poussé au maximum pour infliger un maximum de dégât auditif; enregistré une fois de plus par Francis Caste au studio Sainte-Marthe à l'automne 2014, le son monstrueux du groupe est plus froid et massif que jamais. Ce n'est ni plus ni moins qu'un monument de pure violence, les pieds ancrés dans le bitume, sans concession du début à la fin.
