🌾 SESSION XVIII — CHALGA OF THE CARPATHIANS  

Enter the mist-wrapped mountain passes of the Balkans. “Chalga of the Carpathians” weaves hypnotic non-lexical chants, polyphonic vocal trills, and breath-punctuated harmonies into a forest-born ritual. Gadulka drones, kaval flourishes, and tapan drum rhythms echo through the Carpathian dusk, accompanied by goatskin frame drum taps, swirling Şalgam reeds, and pine-shaded field recordings.

This session honors the ecstatic tradition of mountain song—from Bulgarian village calls to Romanian forest hymns. It’s a trance of stone and smoke, echo and breath.

Seiho - Triangle

Spring In A Small Town is the self-titled debut album from George Cloke, an award-winning sound artist and musician from Kent, UK. The moniker alludes to “the fleeting snapshots of beauty, insularity and contented loneliness that characterise provincial life”, whilst also referencing Fei Mu’s 1948 drama of the same name. Cloke reflects: “Fei imbues his setting and characters with such vulnerability and grace- a subtle craft that saps like me can only dream of replicating”.
Cloke’s previous releases as ambient/electro duo Team Morale were met with critical acclaim, featuring on Radio 1, 6 Music and NTS as well as web zines including DIY, GoldFlakePaint and The Line of Best Fit. As a sound artist, he has exhibited projects in New York, Glasgow, Helsinki and London. He was an artist in residence in Hrísey, Northern Iceland, where he created an interactive sound map, later featured on Drowned In Sound and Fluid Radio.
Across these outputs, Cloke has continued to engage with themes of perception, memory, nature and community, with Spring In A Small Town his most cohesive, positive and personal work yet.
