James Derrah also known by his artist’s name "Sw3aTy Sam" is a Canadian rap artist from Saint John, New Brunswick. He is well-known in the Saint John and surrounding areas for his unique and authentic lyricism conveyed through his music. Recognized by Music-Musique NB for his musical ability and creativity, Sam was supported with a significant investment for a music video project in 2021. The funding for this project was provided to Music-Musique NB by the Government of New Brunswick’s Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture. In April 2023 Sam opened for the co-founder of Swollen Members, “Madchild”, in Saint John during Madchild's 2023 Canadian tour, demonstrating his capability to captivate and entertain large audiences.

Sam utilizes the sub-genres of rap, including emo rap, a fusion genre of rap music often characterized as a mix of characteristics of found in rap music blended with lyrical themes and vocals commonly found in emo music. However, Sam is a versatile artist who often likes to switch things up by returning to his old roots, creating alternative rap music that is heavily reliant on intricate rhyme schemes and mind bending flow patterns which altogether provide a unique contrast to other songs in his music catalogue.

Most commonly Sam's lyrics describe his personal hardships, often conveyed through love songs about relationship issues or bar-heavy tracks about mental health. Sam sets the bar for other aspiring artists by showing vulnerability through his lyrics and creating relatable music for people experiencing hardship. His debut album "Dark World" was released in August 2020, and he is currently working on his sophomore album titled “Time Heals All Wounds” which is set to release sometime in 2023. Currently, he is an unsigned independent artist.
